Very important car in my childhood, the TL was the car my dad primarily drove when he worked for Acura. It was also the last Acura I drove in before my dad left Acura (it was a six-speed manual Type S). I have a lot of memories with them, including a complete loss of one as a result of going through a puddle a little too deep. Seeing the fourth generation, I always wondered, who the fuck designed the car with that dominant grille?! I'm glad to see you enjoyed the third generation TL. Hopefully, you will find a TL Type S to review. They are fun as hell to drive.

It's 07/28/18 and I just watched this video for the first time. I had an '05 TL which I sold and purchased an '07 TL with Navigation. Man, I miss those cars, especially my '07. That was one of my favorite cars I've ever owned. Sold that one and bought a '10 TSX V6 which was a blast to drive. Moved on to a '12 TL Advance followed by a '13 TL Advance which were also great cars. Recently purchased a '16 TLX Advance. I've liked all of my Acuras but the '07 has a sentimental value that some of the others do not. Some of that soul from the 3rd generation TLs was lost on recent Acuras. However, I like the direction Acura is heading and love the A-Spec treatment on the current TLX. I think the next generation TLX due out as a '20 model is going to be phenomenal if it's anything like the recently new '19 RDX. So glad Acura seems to be getting their MOJO back.

My experience and the experience of my family and friends contradicts what you said. I've known many owners of Japanese and American cars that are constantly requiring maintenance, yet they continue to claim their car is reliable, because JD Power tells them so. On the other hand, my family and I have owned 7 BMWs over the years, most of them older models, and we've never had a lemon. The fact is that if you take a car apart, the difference between a German and Japanese car is astounding.

Great review! I actually learned something about my car: had no idea the armrest top could shift forward/back! "I don't sense any torque steer", you say, well, all I can say is, you haven't driven it enough :P As you say, the 3G TL does hide its FWD nature quite well, but push this car hard off the line and oh yes you'll see some torque steer. It's nowhere near as bad as it gets but you definitely feel you're approaching the limits of how much power you can put to the front wheels. Both hands on the wheel is mandatory during hard acceleration. Otherwise, review is spot on. And if anybody is watching this review and is thinking about buying a TL: do yourself a favor and get one, specifically a 07-08 with the lowest mileage you can find.
@devinward86608 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything said above. I have had my 08 for a few months now and I can tell that this is a very well put together vehicle. I also notice torque steer under hard acceleration but it can be managed. I also happen to have the optional ASPEC suspension on my TL which really makes the car feel really sorted in the corners. It is such a pleasure to drive it on a winding road especially for a sedan this size. Acura really nailed it when they came out with the 3rd gen TL.
@devinward86608 жыл бұрын
+Steve Vento In highschool I owned a 98 Lincoln Continental with some bolt ons and a tune. It had the DOHC 4.6 V8 and it was front wheel drive. Now that was a car that you had to be on your toes if you mashed it cause it would yank the wheel right out of your hands if you didn't have a good grip. The torque steer in the TL isn't nearly as aggressive as that car was so that's why I think the torque steer on the TL is mild but manageable.
@devinward86608 жыл бұрын
+Steve Vento I also have the automatic in the TL so that's also probably another reason why it feels so mild to me.

You got it right on the nose, those who lease, go for BMW, many people have bought BMW's and then move on to Asian brands when they realize that repairs and maintenance is very high once the warranty runs out. I also want to mention that the reason these cars sell so well is because they are inexpensive. Most drivers on the road don't understand driving to have fun, which is why the Toyota Camry and Ford F-150 are so popular. Even the cheapest BMW, a BMW X1 is a blast to drive though. If you want a reliable, boring car, there are many Japanese cars to choose from, but if you want something more, BMW, MINI, Porsche, and even Audi offer cars that are very fun to drive.
@chigasaki0611 жыл бұрын
I agree with most of what you said. In comparison to the Germans, the TL is more affordable. Maybe not as fun to drive, but fun enough without the added expense of maintaining a German machine. My bro drives a 2012 5-series, and my sis drove a passat, she just got a 2013 Tiquan. Already both had electrical issues. Luckily for my sis, it wasn't major. My brother's car had a navigation issue. I drive a Japanese car, and never had an issue so far. It is a little boring to drive though, lol.

THAT WAS VERY INFORMATIONAL AND THANK YOU! To response your message, I will spill out my side of story. When I first got the car, I did noticed from R to D and from D to R with a little jerky feeling, so ever since then, I come to full stop before shifting. How often do you recommend to replace trans fluid? I live in Chicago, and usually I wait 2 minutes before I slowly roll the car a few blocks down, then start driving like a old man before actually accelerate harder. ( I used to drive a Corolla, and I consider my foot the "eco" foot) I go to those car wash with actually people drying/cleaning. I usually spend like $15/20 for one of those "clean the bottom" car wash. I should be good with salt and other kind of nasty stuffs. I like cleaning my interior on a weekly basis, so I am good. The back seat had a spot ripped already, so I don't care about much on that. I read about the cracked dashboard. Hopefully that won't happen to me. I avoid potholes at all cost. I even refuse to roll on speed hump whenever I can. I hear squeaky nose, but it has to do with the silver plastic plate along with the gear shift. Premium gas every-time! But sometimes I go to Costco for their gas since I have a membership there. Otherwise, I usually go to Mobil. I usually have my friend to do my oil change. If he spots anything, he should be able to find a solution for me. But, I will bring that to his attention, so maybe I can have him to take a look. I know when I first got the car, there was minor leak with steering fluid. That's all I got for now too Oh I got mine last March, 97K mileage = $8,000 in blue

Sir, I agree with your opinion on all that crappy tech stuff in new cars. People just need to learn how to drive.

I test drove a 2004 TL back on 1006 but got an RSX-S turbo instead. No regrets. Still like the TL though.

There are some issues with the 2004 to 2006 TL, namely transmission, so go with the 2007 or 2008 TL given the option. I bought my 2007 TL in 2010 (for just over $17.1k with 54k miles) and it's been a great car since. Although I just hit 100k miles and have to get the timing belt changed, which is almost a $1k service. I could probably do it myself, but the location of the belt makes it very difficult and if you mess it up, you could ruin your engine, so will probably bite the bullet and have the dealership do it.

It was before that generation the one on 2003 and before with transmission slipping

David D Yah I just bought my 08 and love it. Has 122k so the belt was already replaced by the last owner :) This car is so quiet and refined compared to my 06 G35(which is also a great car) but I def prefer this TL to amy G of the era. Look forward to taking care of this car and puting another 100k on her.

Other than the non folding rear seats, I really like this car. Nice review man!

Alias Justanacc They're probably non folding to increase rigidity. There's a big X brace there.

I can't believe Acura used that same 5 speed until the 2012 model. Yes it's been through a few updates but its still the same concept. 12 years is a very long time to have one transmission.
@Darksyne9 жыл бұрын
***** OH MY GOD the Acura 5 speed was one of the most broken transmissions of all time XD Shows how much you know about cars =p
@Aztekian9 жыл бұрын
krauser979 ive had two '08 TL's (present whip 2nd TL 80,000 miles) and ive had no problem with the transmission at all.
@Darksyne9 жыл бұрын
Aztek4611 The first ones had the most problems. They were able to fix them by 2006 and then the 2007 and 2008 type s had the best of the 5 speed autos but no telling if they still share the same problems from the first gen 5 speeds
@rightfight1009 жыл бұрын
krauser979 They fixed the problem around 2004-05 for the TL since the older TL had tons of transmission issues.

Bailey Nguyen Ya i was lucky enough that acura gave me the same transmission that the 3rd gen tl's have when my went under warranty

I got a 2006 tl as my first car 10 months ago. Very nice car and even though lots of people in my school drives bmws and maserati cars I still feel spoiled to have such a nice car. They were either going to get me this or Nissan versa 2009

@@Randomguy-kn3nv - Acura's from 2004 to 2008 (both TSX and TL's) were the best and most reliable cars made in the past 20 years. Close to 160K and still going strong with regular oil change & the required brake pads & tire changes!! Stunning car

I'm talking about having to get right at the cars bumper though. A one inch gap. NOT parallel parking. Like a space where it's red in front and a car behind you. I have to back up as much as i can and get out to see if I could back up more or else my front end would be on the red zone. That gets annoying. A backup camera with distance lines or sensors can really help judge the distance.

Lol I actually have the car he mentioned at the end, the 07-08 Type S 6mt in kinetic blue. He’s right, really is a needle in a haystack. Mine’s the only kinetic blue I’ve ever seen. The car has a lot to offer for its used price. Type S has 286 hp, 256 lb/ft, heated seats, nav, back up camera, memory seats, and tilt-down mirrors in reverse. Also looks a LOT better than the base imo. Some torque steer but nothing unmanageable

I'm trying to get a Type S they're really rare though...and sometimes dealers have them really overpriced.
@ssflipallday6 жыл бұрын
Shinethelight got mine a year and a half ago for $10.5k with 107k miles. $13k all said and done. $9k is probably fair for a nice one. Third gear is weird, sometimes has this weird blocking feeling like you can’t push it all the way in and rejects it if you let the clutch out. Supposedly it’s alleviated by switching the gear fluid to some GM fluid, haven’t tried. I just don’t let the clutch out if I feel the block, put the shifter back in neutral and try again and it usually works 🤷♂️ Good luck 👍

I thought the 2005 Tl had 270 HP? but the newer ones like 2006-2008 the standard engine has 258? According to the dealership like carmax the 2005 model rated at 270HP. Am I wrong?
@lloydhudson64635 жыл бұрын
I think you're right about that. I remember Acura doing that and I was scratching my head. Then they decided to do the type s with 286 hp, which was only 16 more than the base from a few years before, it was a strange move for sure.
@richardcarlson97244 жыл бұрын
They changed the way the horsepower is measured. All of the base cars have the same horsepower, 258 for 2004-2008.
