I owned both of these cars. I bought a 2008 Charger R/T off the lot with 19 miles on it. By the time it had 450 miles on it, it was a lemon. After I got my money back, I picked up a 2008 G8GT. Waaaaay more torque and power under the hood, handles so much better than the Charger, and better yet, nothing major has gone wrong with it in 7 years. #RIPPontiac

The g8 is hands down the best car I've ever owned. It can do it all. It can haul like no one's business, and can carry 5 grown adults comfortably. Can't beat the 6.0 l76 either. Mechanics I trust prefer it over the ls2.

@FPSRelic

@@dcr1545 The L98 is an L76 with the DoD hardware removed, otherwise it was effectively the same engine. And the L98 was only ever available in Australia.
@dcr1545
@dcr1545 3 жыл бұрын
@@FPSRelic Why yes it is. Are you trying to teach me? The L98 has a better cam as well which increases HP. The fact the DOD is removed makes it a more reliable alternative and a better engine. Also being a Australian I know we were the only one's to receive the L98 in a Commodore. Mate don't try to teach a Aussie about Commodore's.
@FPSRelic
@FPSRelic 3 жыл бұрын
@@dcr1545 Your statement was "the L98 is a way stronger and better engine" The key word being "way". I'm just pointing out that it isn't. Do a cam upgrade to both engines and you end up with the exact same engine. And what makes a "better" engine is subjective. If you do a lot of highway driving, the L76 can be a better engine as it can be more economical on fuel.
@dcr1545
@dcr1545 3 жыл бұрын
@@FPSRelic it's not just the cam. It's also the lifters which is a problem in the L76 and L77 motor's. Yes you can get a cam upgrade but I was talking about from factory. Plus who in their right mind buys a V8 to save fuel? The L98 is a stronger motor. You can do a cam upgrade in a L98 and it will outperform a LS2 due to the L98 having LS3 head's but that's not what I stated. I simply said those who have a choice would chose a L98 over a L76 or L77 everyday of the week. Hey both have huge potential but it will cost you more to upgrade a L76 compared to a L98. That's fact.

Also, with 50/50 weight dist, can really swing the tail out and control it. Too much fun in the mountains. Have added ECM/TCM tune, Corsa Exh, Vararam CAI & turned off DOD. Now it's an animal and very responsive. Plus, get 28 mpg on long trips. Thanks Australia & Bob Lutz. Awesome car.

When holden started they were what I think is called a vertically tiered company. What that meant is that every part that was needed to build their cars was built in house. Holden even made the nuts and bolts that was needed I believe. The involvement in the G8(commodore) was very limited. The US provided the motor and the gearbox. Australia did the rest. The chasis was built on a global GM platform that Holden was contracted to design. I believe it is called the sigma platform.

Thank you for the correction. I was under the impression that the engine for the G8 GXP came from the Corvette. You are right though Holden HSV is using it in their V8 powered rear wheel drive cars as well. Seeing HSV adopted and modified the LS3 from the US GM branch, one could imply there is an American heart under the hood of Holden Special Vehicles. As I have insinuated in other posts, humanity achieves the most when different cultures collaborate.

@avx7 Fair enough but Holden did make the car first. The plant/factory that makes the commodore is in Australia. The g8 grill was built their too. The only thing put on it in the usa is the pontiac badge. when pontiac closed, holden released a limited edition commodore that had the left over g8 grills to get rid of them. Hsv used left over gxp badges. The pontiac badge on the steering wheel is inside a circle because the holden badge is round and fits perfectly in the circle.

I personally like both cars. The Charger has been around for a few years now and that's starting to become apparent. Although the G8 isn't technically new (Holden and Vauxhall have sold it for years), it's new to us in North America, so that adds to the appeal. I'm not sure where they got their prices though because where I live a Charger is much cheaper than a G8, not to mention you have 4 engines to choose from while the G8 only offers 2.

I have to send a shout out on this one. I'm a charger fan and I have to say, the 2010 charger is gonna throw some serious slack on your decision here. Chrystler is currently testing a new Pheonix engine line that, according to current tests, will give the SRT-8 model a 6.4L V8 HEMI that'll crank out between 440 and 470 hp at peak. Obviously, this isn't set in stone yet, but I hope my favorite car in the world comes out in the end. Long Live American Muscle.

I would have to say it's not that they can't, it's simply that they don't want to. Take a look at the dyno charts for that engine and you'll see why. Take note of the very wide and flat torque curve. It's strong at any RPM, and it doesn't much care what gear its in. This also allows highway cruising barely above idle speed, allowing it to match or exceed the fuel economy of many smaller engines that have to work much harder to achieve the same. In real life driving, its also more enjoyable.

I never said the Commodore used the Sigma platform, I said the first generation CTS used the Sigma. There should be extenuating circumstances for why Holden developed the Sigma for the Commodore then decided to use the V platform instead. Either way most modern rear wheel drive American passenger cars are built on Australian or German developed platforms, that are internalized and refined, as is the case with the Sigma and the Sigma II.

From what I have read that would be because Holden did not call it the Sigma. It looks like Holden developed the Global Rear Wheel Drive, (GRWD) prior to 1998 but dropped it. It looks like Cadillac picked the up Holden developed GWRD and debuted it as the Sigma on the CTS in 2002.

The one thing that they failed to mention in this video is that the G8 is 6 inches shorter and 3 inches narrower than the charger. And it weighs about 600 lbs less than the charger. Weight makes a big difference, if you put them at the same weight I think they would be the same car. I have driven them and I think they are very evenly matched. Charger feels more solid and more secure if you were to get into an accident.

The 2009 CTS-V is built on the Sigma II platform which was designed and made in America. Currently the CTS-V holds the production sedan Nurburgring record at 7:59.32.

Even though it was made by the GM Australian division, that car was making quite a good profit in the U.S. when it was shipped and sold here. It's a damn shame it was discontinued.

The G8 is due to return to America under a new badge in 2013; The Chevrolet Lumina and El Camino pickup. If you want some idea of what it will look like, look up the Saudi Arabian Chevrolet Lumina. Remember that the G8, Middle Eastern Lumina and Commodore were all designed, built and exported from Australia by GM Holden

ok between the bmw 335d and this car...which would you guys choose and why? don't know too much about cars but with the 335d you get great low end torque and good fuel economy with an epa estimated 23 city/36 highway....but with the g8 gt you get a very generous sized sedan with solid power and at a great price too...just curious :)

i agree. actually, neither of them are all American. the pontiac is a re-badged Vauxhall VXR8 and the charger was partially (if not mostly) designed by DaimlerBenz when it owned Chrysler. There might be more but the only all American muscle cars i can think of right now are the Challenger, Corvette, Camaro, and Mustang. everything else is either a re-badged european car or was partially designed by a european car company. they should hav used the charger srt-8 instead of the r/t

tiny correction, the dealer in Surrey sold 12, the total UK sales of the Vxr8 in 2007 was 261 cars sold... thats not a good sales number, which means the car will get dropped from the program sooner or later becaues like i said before, noone is buying those things

Also, no, I'm not trying to pull credit away from Australian designers at all. I actually do own a GTO, and I'll be the first to say that without the motor inside, I would have never purchased it. Both the GTO and G8 are decent performers, but the only time they really shine is when you pit them against a retro-styled pig. Take all the credit you want for the car, it really doesn't set shit for a benchmark in handling.

I realize Holden's headquarters is in Australia. That does not change the fact that they are still owned by GM. Cadillac is another division owned by GM. Their headquarters are not the same as GM's either. I never said Saab, Vauxhall, and Opel were different than Holden, they are all owned by GM as well.

Holden is a subsidiary of GM, thus is owned by GM. Therefore, GM has the ultimate input in the production. The Pontiac G8 was a GM car, built in Australia, and then brought to the US as the G8.

Turns out that even though the G8 spanked the Charger all over these tests, the Charger still didn't have to worry about the G8 being real competition because GM failed to properly market the G8. In 2009 Pontiac sold 23,000 G8s and Dodge sold 60,000 Chargers. Perhaps if GM actually marketed the car as a car that can beat Dodge's popular Charger, they wouldn't have had to kill it. I think the G8 is awesome. It should have never been killed off.

That 5 speed automatic on the charger really numbs down performance. Sounds like it drops out of the power band when it shifts where the Pontiac just keeps on trucking.

I know this is old but it's not the trans, it's the 2.89 gear in the rear axle, for highway driving fuel economy not for racing that's why they feel slower then they should lol

@@xxgrimravenxx5172 Whats funny is the standard G8 GT still has a 2.92 rear end. The powertrain with the extra gear and higher redline help it stay in that sweet spot.

@@redspeeder9848 good call, lol thats the goal, to stay in the power band all the time,, the charger would really benefit of they made a 3.55 rear end for it or if you can swap in a getrag 3.91 that would keep the car in its power range more often

No, the G8 uses the same 3.6L DOHC V6 as the Cadillac CTS, Camaro V6, and Malibu LTZ. It makes 250+hp and a little less torque and gets the best fuel economy of the bunch. The reason ppl say not to get the V6 is b/c you will never get the feel of the V8 from that V6, therfore, they say its not worth it. But if ur in the market for one, go ahead and get the G8 GT or GXP. The brand is gone, so they will be worth a lot in the future, and GXP will be rare and worth waay more in years to come :)
