I can see why my local Honda dealer wanted $5000 for a replacement transmission. Time to look for another car, too bad as I just spend $2300 on new battery pack. But the rust on the rocker panels doesn't justify continuing to keep this car on the road. Problem is there are few inexpensive used cars available in Maine during this latest covid variant surge.

Our 2006 Hybrid revs and won't go into gear sometimes when we're at a red light. We turn off the car and turn it back on and it goes. I'm wondering if that is a sign the transmission is failing (or is it something else). SoCal-92503

@@Pastelgarbage yeah at a stoplight. It turns green and won’t go. Sometimes input it in park and then back in drive and it worksZ sometimes I turn off the car turn it back on and it works. Most of the time it works but giving this car to a new driver might freak em out and at what point does it just stop working completely? Is there a fix?

Did you have to hold the motor from the top when you were removing the subframe? if so, how? Also whats the easiest way to remove the drive shaft carrier bearing?

@Ernesto Torres you don’t have to hold the engine from the top when removing the subframe. The motor mount on the passenger side and the transmission mount would be holding it in place. Once you remove the subframe then you have to support the engine only with a jack cause at the end you will have the engine mount holding the engine and the jack supporting the engine. The best way to remove that half shaft is by removing the 3 bolts holding it to the engine block then wiggle the whole half shaft with axle together. Once is out it will be much easier to separate them and to reinstall the half shaft secured with 3 bolts first then you can pop in the axle onto the half shaft

Does anyone know if you have space to pull the motor out of the top without unbolting subframe or lowering transmission down? About to do an engine swap and hoping enough space to just pull motor out of the top. 2009 civic 1.3 hybrid. Thanks for the help anyone

@Trent Whitton You actually can You have to remove the cowl and the front upper core support held by 10mm bolts and if you want extra wiggle room remove the intake manifold. Lastly to remove straight up from transmission remove all 10mm holding the flex plate otherwise you won’t have space to separate the engine and transmission. Let me know if you have any questions

Is it possible for you to tell me how you got the top bolt connecting the transmission to the engine out?

The easiest way is to remove the top cowl and you will have plenty room. You could use a long 17mm combination wrench 🔧 To remove the cowl there are only 4 12mm and and 5 10mm bolts. If you have any more questions, let me know.

Hey man, great question, the answer is NO, the only compatible transmission is 07 and 08 06 you have to replace with same year. Same goes for 09 Now if your asking if is the same removal procedure then yes it is exactly the same for 06 and 09.

@@spintheboost8888 the tranny i got was for my 08, i pulled it from a 07, shouldve been compatible, but after i installed i realized it had an extra sensor, the donor car mustve installed a incompatible tranny but it didnt really matter because since my car doesnt have a connector for the sensor the computer isn't looking for that signal, if it had been the other way around and i didnt have the sensor on the tranny but did have a leftover connector, then the computer would be looking for the signal causing problems, i thing the 06 tranny is compatible with all 8th gen, but not the other way around,

This is a great vid, if possible can I email you regarding my 08 civic hybrid trans, can't afford to have anyone replace it as I was laid off and trying to get my car running again, it runs but at high speeds over 60mph it slips, I changed the oil about 4 months ago and the it was running ok then, small particles were on the magnetic bolt, and again when I checked it yesterday, I used Honda cvt fluid, 3 quarts, but at 250k miles I think it's time to replace it, I have several options with trannies around 500 bucks, 400 on the coast but I want to make sure I due it right, I'm not afraid as I've done everything to this car, replaced the hybrid battery, catalytic converter, replaced watery pump, flushed radiator and heater core, shocks, front and back, brakes, bottom and transmission side motor mount, dash cluster, coil spring in steering wheel, even got some precut tint online for 30 bucks to tint my windows dirt cheap, I like this car cause it's great on gas and after all I've done to it I want to fix the tranny, I added cvt repair fluid cause I figured if it is shot can't really do any more harm since I'll be pulling it out, I need some guidance please

@@spintheboost8888 i tried responding last week but the message i posted with my email got deleted, i got desperate and got lucky on a car at the local junkyard with engine and tranny still attached, it was wrecked so i figured the internal parts are still good, i took off the tranny, it was 105 here but i didnt care, i needed the car running, i dropped the tranny, 2 extra 17mm bolts besides the 4 corner ones stumped me for a while, took it home and replaced the bad one, been running smooth 2 weeks now. i have another 08 hybrid with a bad engine, water got into the cylinders earlier this year, i added blue devil and it worked for 4 5 months, then started to overheat again, i knew it was temporary, i went back today and the car that i took the tranny from is still there for 3 more days, the engine is still on being held only by the motor mount on the passenger side and a few other minor cables, i want to take it off tomorrow and swap out the engine on my other car, is there any precautions when installing the engine? ive done everything to this car, getting 40mpg still with over 250k miles on 1 and over 40mpg with over 354k on the other one, i want to keep these 2 cars as long as possible, how can i get in touch with you? thanks in advance

@@spintheboost8888 ive tried many ways to send you my number, keeps getting deleted, i replaced the tranny 2 weeks ago, i separated and dropped it after removing the sub frame, i dont have an engine hoist to lift, it was pretty easy, but a few days ago i was rotating tires and the car shifted, the jack moving and breaking into the bottom of the engine, its ruined, i went to the junkyard and found the car was still there, the car that i had taken the tranny from, i took the engine and am trying to replace it, i want to take it off in the same way, i already disconnected everything up top, i didnt need to disconnect the ac lines from the compressor, i just left the compressor resting where the radiator sits, am going to drop the subframe in the morning, are there any complications to doing it this way? the engine didnt come with the electric motor so it doesnt have the electric 3 prong connection, i dont know if separating the engine and tranny will give it enough clearance to drop it will drop like it did with the tranny removal but that connector is a few inches overlapping with the tranny, i dont thing that connector is removeable, unless im missing something, if you can shed some advice id appreciate it, thanks in advance

How long did it take you to do the entire job? Any special tools other than the tran jack? I have the same car, 2008 Hybrid with 245k miles. It just started to slip. At highway speeds it is fine. The IMA went out around 15,000 miles ago. I checked all the fuses personally and had it diagnosed by a Honda dealer. They think there might be a short behind the dash. The door locks, radio, ECM computer hookup all have no power. Around 5k miles ago when the temperature reaches over 85 the car battery light will come on now too. I have to stop and restart the vehicle for it to charge again. The motor seems very strong and the CVT would possibly still be fine if the IMA had not gone out. Still gets 40 mpg and AC works (replaced compressor and IMA battery 4 years ago) Any suggestions? (I can see 2008 trans for this car are still available used for around 250 with 150k miles).

It will take you roughly about 12 hours to get it done. No special tools. a metric socket set from 8mm to 19mm and a 36mm socket for the axles, a few extensions and patience is all you need.

E2889E I got mine from all used parts.com they have different vendors and I got a 50k mile transmission with them. It was $500 plus $300 shipping. You can also go to the junk yard and get one for $300-$400 but you have to remove it yourself. You can purchase warranty incase the transmission is bad but do you really want to install and remove two times?

@ Roe Ried there is no such switch on this transmission. This is a hybrid CVT it doesn’t have multiple gears. It’s a band.

After installing the transmission, did you have to reprogram the PCM? I recently replaced a CVT on an 06 Civic with a remanufactured one and its driving the same as the old transmission. Any advice would be great. Thank you.

@ Fernando Sanchez. I didn’t have to reprogram anything at all. I don’t know what your car is doing but what I can tell you is that if you have an 06 it’s got to be replaced with an 06 transmission only cause that specific tranny has 4 sensors total, now the the 07 and 08 they are both compatible and they both have only 3 sensors total. And from personal experience, there was this 07 hybrid I worked on and someone had installed an 06 transmission in it and the car was running ok until right before coming to a stop the car will sound like a piece of metal was clunking in the front. So there was an extra speed sensor on that 06 transmission that was throwing everything off and since it wasn’t plugged in and wasn’t sending the right info to the pcm it wasn’t working 100% but the car wasn’t giving any codes since that extra speed sensor on the 06 was basically disconnected since the 07 harness on the car was one sensor short and no plug for it. Hopefully that helps.
