IndyCar is criminally underrated. I feel like both NASCAR and F1 fans would love this sort of thing if they had more exposure to it. You can't deny how insane this engine sounds around an oval.

What happened was, Ganassi actually tried to cheat. They purposely mounted their scoring transponder upside-down in the car, because one day, they discovered that it somehow effectively "tricked" the scoring antenna wire embedded in the track. The computer scoring system monitors all showed Dixon's car crossing the line first, so it wasn't ABC's fault for calling the wrong winner. In fact, their S/F line camera "saved the day" in all reality. Since this incident, the proper installation of the scoring transponders in the cars is more scrutinized by technical inspection.

I don't see that as cheating, just mismounting the darn thing. I would let them off with a warning: but if that's repeated, than I'll start having penalties. Beside, even if mounted perfectly, the margin of error was .0006 seconds. To avoid this, indycar had a high speed camera taking picture every tenth of a thousand of a second. And two high-frame-rate cameras connected to a digital video system. These 3 cameras recorded every single passing of the start-finish line. Technically, a transponder could have fallen off in a crash, and some driver could have finish the race on 3 wheels and the IRL could have been able to tell the time he took to finish the race. Even if the transponder was sending signals from miles off the track. Maybe they can cheat with the transponder, but what's the point if measures exist to catch that?

I guess they need to up the frequency of the signal.. I don't know what it is now, maybe 24khz or 24,000 updates a second. Seems fast, but they were closer than that. How about a 5.8Ghz signal? 5.8 billion cycles a second. Not going faster than that I hope.

@anthcybo Not so sure. F1 do not run with such low downforce setups either. I think an F1 with proper wings and engine simply retuned would run faster. With a F1 low downforce setup (which is like a medium setup on IRL car) they reach something like 225 at Monza I believe. BAR ran a modified F1 car with minimum downforce in a straight line speed test - 257mph.

***** I totally agree with you on NASCAR I love NASCAR and INDYCAR (IRL when it was around). TO answer your question... Insurance companies.... Close racing makes for dangerous racing but they don't want to lose the bet that there will be a problem and have to payout... So they force the designers and race officials to make the racing more and more reliable and safer. As much as people might disagree with me- I stand by this thought of The fear of danger is what made racing exciting.

"Um safety has a lot to do with the new race cars just look at how many people died using the old models." Please do your research before making such a remark. The old models where in use from 1997-2011. In that span only one man died, in 2011, Dan Weldon, and that had nothing to do with the design of the car, it had to do with him being launched into the catch fence in such a way he hit head first into a poll. And in that 14 year span on average, a car was launched into the fence about once every 3-4 years, total of 4 or 5 cars. The new cars have been in use since 2012 and in that 2 year period there has been 3 roll overs and 2 cars launched into the fence in the last year- one in Huston that almost took Dario Franchitti's life and one at California that seriously injured the Russian Rookie driver- Dario was lucky to not die, based on the way he hit the fence.

Michael Vincent We are talking about competition (during a race) dumb ass.... Paul Dana was killed in Practice when he was hit in the head by a tire from the car he hit, that has nothing to do with the design of the the car, and Tony Rena was killed at Indy in closed testing.
@Vne87
@Vne87 9 жыл бұрын
Seems more like you were talking about the safety of the cars, which is a constant regardless of race/practice/test conditions. Additionally, the time frame you mentioned includes 4 different chassis across 2 generations. All 3 fatalities occurred in the second generation (2003-2011). When compared to other top level open wheel series (F1 and CART at the time) Indycar had 3 more fatalities than either of them.
