Steps to replace side-view mirror on a 2003 - 2009 Prius.
My mirror was hit (probably by a passing car) while parked on the street. The dealership wanted $250 for the part and $118 for the labor!
I found the Genuine Toyota Part for $153.00 and replaced it myself.

Thank you so much for this video!! I own a 2007 Prius and have been having to tape my driver's side mirror for months now. It was okay during winter but now that summer has come temps have been reaching the 110°F range (I live in the desert lol) and the tape has been continuously sagging and oozing stickiness. Almost every other day I was having to re-adjust and retape. Living in SoCal the quote for a replacement at an auto shop is $300-$400. I purchased the part on Ebay for $22. 🙃🙃 Just saved a good chunk of money. I have minimal mechanical experience and with your easy to follow tutorial I managed to do this installation in about 15 minutes without having to remove the entire door panel. Thank you again for being a catalyst in me saving time, money, stress, and gaining knowledge on how to do this for future reference. It's so awesome to be able to see properly again out of my driver's side and re-adjust my mirror when needed!!

You are my new hero! Someone hit me while looking down at his phone and then shot down a highway ramp. I was so mad!!! After a $300-500 estimate, I drove for 3 months with the remains duct taped. Following your great video, I just replaced the mirror. Your explanations, frustrations, and warnings about what to expect were so useful. Please keep making videos like this. My 2007 Prius and I thank you from the bottom of our crankcase!

Great instructional video. Just followed this procedure on a 2007 passenger side mirror. Worked perfectly. Old mirror removed and new installed in less than 45 mins. The challenge was reinstalling the door panel top portion - getting those clips up and over the ridge to sit properly, without breaking them. Take care with that part (plastic interior trim tools are helpful) and make sure that none of the white plastic clips (e.g. the one attached to the lower portion of the speaker) detach and fall into the door panel. Thanks!

Only watched this one video before I got started replacing my passenger side mirror. So I partially popped the little pull handle plastic cover, removed the plastic piece behind the handle (yes, it's two separate pieces. I probably didn't even need to partially remove the main plastic piece from the edge), unscrewed the screw there, popped the speaker and a few of the clips on top of the door panel. Replaced the mirror, pushed the door panel back, and screwed the handle parts back on and pushed the speaker back on. Super easy and quick, maybe 5-10 minutes, everything works great. Your video was perfectly spot on, thank you very much. My car is a 2007 Toyota Prius and appears to be identical to yours with regard to the doors and mirrors.

Thank you! I have a 2005 and my door panel is slightly different, but easy enough to figure out. The plastic exterior part on the mirror was indeed the scariest part and took a little patience, I used a pastry knife from my kitchen and slide it into the rounded edge closest to the door. Came off easily then.

I almost didn't keep watching because this appeared to be a full door removal video. Glad I continued to watch. One suggestion would be to explain that first you are going to show the long way so you dont lose viewers. I GREATLY appreciate that you are not experienced and ran into the difficulties a novice like myself would and, as such, took time to explain the placement of the clips and how they detach and reattach! Good luck!

Nice video, thanks! But - on a 2005 Prius I just worked on, it has different door panels than yours. This car has tweeters just inside the car, by the side-view mirror (in addition to the speakers low in the door). Anyhow I still needed to remove the door panel. This proved to be quite easy, and the rest of your mirror replacement instructions are spot on. BTW I didn't disconnect the the window switch panel. I just popped it off and let it hang, then removed the door panel. Let the entire thing hanging loosely (it's not heavy) and swapped out the mirror. Thanks again for posting!!!

Omg! Thank you so much for this video! I’m so glad that I watched it after the other silent one before I started my replacement project. It saved so much extra work! I just replaced the broken mirror on my Prius and it was so easy! Actually the hardest part that took as long as the rest of the entire project was my failed attempt to use my old blue mirror cover instead of the black one that cane with my new part. I finally gave up and used the new cover which popped into place perfectly.

Worked like a charm on the passenger side as well. Only needed to dislodge the speaker and pull the door panel away from the base of the window just enough to access the electrical connection for the mirror. 20 minute job! Doesn't get any better than that!

Excellent video. Absolutely correct about NO need to remove the full door panel! On my 2010 Prius, this method allowed a 20 minute mirror replacement if one just removes the two screws as shown beneath the pop out mini panels. Pull back door while slightly lifting(to allow clearance of the window rubber liner) the door panel, starting with the corner nearest to the mirror and gradually pull back giving just enough space to unloosen the single 10 mm nut found on the inside panel which the mirror wire is tucked behind (since my Prius is a later model). Simply unclip the power harness from the right side, reverse feed through, undo the 3 -10mm screws holding the mirror on and install in reverse sequence of the above. Maybe cleaning the door surface as shown in this video before applying the new mirror is probably helped my after-market mirror retain a secure fit without the reported rattling, etc when test driving afterwards. This small investment in time beat the Dealer’s quoted price of $110 for the hour they said it required. Also, the online charge for the mirror was also $200 less than picking it up at the Toyota Dealer. Works just fine. Again, kudos to this video.

+Orion Weldon Did you disconnect the battery for a while before attempting? Heard this disables the side-door airbags, which are at risk of being triggered when you open the door panel?
@OrionWeldon
@OrionWeldon 9 жыл бұрын
+Jacob Israel - No, I did not disconnect the battery, and didn't even think about that. Thank you for the warning for others and the future. When I popped off the top of the panel, it allowed a gap of about 3" - 4", which was plenty to work with, and also didn't seem potentially dangerous, but again, I never considered that issue.

Thanks. This was great. My Prius is a ‘05 and the handle assembly was different. There wasn’t a screw to remove. I was still able to do it by pulling back at the panel at the hinge. Less room to work with, but manageable.

Thanks for the very helpful video. In my case, it was the passenger side mirror that needed replacing, but the same procedure worked (except that I didn't have to worry about the control panel--which it appears you probably didn't have to either, even on the driver's side). The hardest part was unplugging the wire connector from the jack, which required quite a bit of pressure and dexterity--difficult in such a tight space. But it eventually came out. I used an off-market replacement mirror that cost me 75 bucks and looks exactly like the old one. I even salvaged the cover from the original so that I didn't have to have the replacement mirror cover painted to match the car's exterior. So, all in all, a great value, considering that the local Toyota service department wanted something like $600 to do the whole job!

I did this today! Indeed, I ONLY removed the clip and screw inside the door handle and it worked perfectly. The price of the whole part has come down to 49€, advantage of having an older car, all the resellers want to get rid of their remaining parts. I had more trouble replacing the cover pane on the mirror itself, as the three lower clips had all broken off... had to glue it and will revert to the black original on my blue car if needed. Otherwise, I'm a complete amateur and normally anything like this will fail at my hands, so I was very pleased.

The reason you pull the whole door panel is the clips at the top of the panel are not designed to be pulled outwards, you are supposed to lift the whole panel up vertically to disengage them. Orat least that is what other you tubers have said. If you pull outwards those clips could easily break off, particularly if its an older car and the plastic clips have lost most of their plasticizer, making them brittle. In later models the clips are set up to pull outwards at the top edge. Not sure when the design changed.

Your video inspired me to buy a mirror and try this. And it was helpful. But in the end, I had to take the door panel off. I think that maybe there's a difference in the trim lines. What you describe as "rubber" (where the door handle insert is), on my base model 2005, that's rock-hard plastic. Anyway, I tried your approach first, and it was clear that the top-of-the-door trim was not going to come off without considerable damage.

Right at 5:25, a plastic stud joining the upper black panel to the lower beige panel will break along the leading edge of the panel. Also, fitting the top edge back onto the window sill is nearly impossible without damaging the panel. Partial removal not recommended.

So glad to have found your video- it's great! I'm about to attempt this myself -after changing the Prius head light bulbs -which was truly a ridiculous adventure. I managed that, and watching your vid makes me think I can do this, too. Thank you VERY much! (=

You're very welcome. Yes, I too went through the headlight adventure first. I tried making a video of that, but the spaces were just too tight. I'm really glad I could help. Good luck!

Thanks for your video , it's really useful , but I think another video is right , it's better to take off the whole door panel , because there are several hooks on upper panel , I tried as your video instructed , but it almost let me broke my panel , but luckily , I redone it by removing the whole door panel , and put back hooks on the piece of metal , then it was done .

Lawrence ZZ I followed the instructions for the video but when I went to put the upper door panel back it didn't fit snugly. I played around with it but with repeated taking on and off of the upper door panel the white plastic clips started to come loose. My driver side window also would not close more than 1/3-1/2 way. I was going to take it to the dealer tomorrow but may try taking off the whole door panel. Mine is a 2006 Prius. From the little bit I could see on your video the clips on the inside of the upper door panel seem different. Thnaks for taking the time to do the video everything was working fine until I went to put the upper side panel back.

Donal Moloney Hmm, thanks for that heads up! Hopefully that will help some people in the future. For me reattaching the clips to the metal frame of the door just involved pressing the panel back to get the end of the clip over the lip of the metal, but I can easily see how that might not be so easy and lead to them loosening. I'm sorry if I led you astray. Good luck, and thanks for the response!

+Lawrence ZZ is right. When I followed the instructions on this video and tried to pry open the door panel at the top, it broke several plastic clips that hook over the top of the inside door frame. The correct way to remove the door panel is to pull the bottom of the panel straight out, then slide the panel up to unhook the panel. Do not just try to pry the top of the door panel out.

Thanks! That was encouraging but I can tell you why one may need to remove the entire door panel... that's because they drop the nut while unscrewing it. Happened to me on both sides. Learned more than I wanted to know. Ha!

I damaged my door panel trying to do this. It's quite fragile and is not designed to be opened from the top like this. It is much better to remove the whole door panel, starting from the bottom. It doesn't take long.

Never mind. It only took an extra hour or so to repair the door panel in the end. When I got time, I took the door panel off, put it on my kitchen table and put it back together (using superglue to reattach some black plastic tabs that had snapped off, taping the styrofoam insulation back into place, reattaching the velvet strip). Once the panel was one piece, with all the Toyota white clips in the right places, it was easy to get it back on the car. I hung it from the top, and snapped it back on, working down. Sorry to complain - your video was very helpful about the hidden screws and the speaker box, and the electrical panel, the only flaw is advising people to open the door panel at the top rather than take the whole thing off starting at the bottom clips.

Great video. Will attempt to change mine soon. Was it necessary to remove any of the door handle section? Or just the door panel below the speaker?
@OrionWeldon
@OrionWeldon 6 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry I missed this comment for so long. Yes, it appears necessary to remove the interior panel of the door latch area. If you are referring to the instrument panel on the elbow rest (where there is also a door grip) then, no, it is not necessary to remove the instrument panel cover. I hope that helped.

So, removing the side panel is the easiest part. Just remove those 2 screws and there's a pull handle at the bottom. Just lift up and out and the whole thing pops off.
