Robert Crays name has become synonymous with soulful modern blues with clean, impeccably phrased guitar work. Born in 1953 in Georgia into a military family that moved often, he grew up listening to blues, jazz, gospel, soul and pop and he began playing guitar in his early teens. Near the end of high school in Tacoma, Wash., Cray was considering an architecture career and formed a cover band in which he sang and played guitar.

No overdriven Marshall amp, no whammy bar or neck tapping: just honest playing with great touch and tone. Mr. Cray is a cool cat who has his own sound.

Best concert I ever saw was Sept. 2008 at Horse Shoe Casino,Indiana. This man does not get old, he only get's better with age like a fine wine! He becomes one with his guitar when he picks it up,it's magical to see him live. That's my "Young Bob" ,the great persuader "Right Next Door!" Love him to pieces ♥ Thanks for this great post fendermusical, msstevie ♥

@shredacuda I am an avid Buddy fan, and Collins, and King, and did hear a lot of Collins, but Buddy is in there. And Robert would be the first to tell you that Buddy is a master.

The amp he is using is a "Matchless". It's one of those WAY over priced "boutique" amps. Not sure if they still make 'em, but a 2x12 combo will set you back at least 2K.

People: Cray knows what he's doing. His mic is always low like that and his strings are .11's. He plays the shit out of them every night and that's part of how he has his incredible tone.

His singing made him a star and the guitar playing is ok but let's face it, the voice is the king of instruments

Great playing as always, Young Bob! In a funny way, he's a little like Billy Gibbons - playing the blues, but rarely the I-IV-V style - always putting a new spin on it, but always the blues... Keep it up Robert!

@johngolby No he doesn't age one bit ,he only gets better with time! I could watch & listen all night to "Young Bob" especially if he was "Right Next Door" LOL Love this man and his cool style,he's not full of himself, just very casual, like he doesn't know how great he really is! It's amazing to hear him live he sounds just like his records, maybe better. ♥

Buddy can fuckin' play. And he does it well. There's a reason Jimi cancelled a gig to get a chance to jam with Buddy at a small club.

Always liked Robert Cray's singing & playing. His tone was always cleaner than I liked. Did he throw Eric Clapton under the bus over vaccines after Clapton was a friend to him?

That's what you get from a stratocaster low ouptut bridge pickup or second position on a clean amp.. I would think he would benefit of a fat p90 type pickup in the bridge.. even his second position would benefit from this..
