At the time we produced this video, I would be 100% in agreement with you. However, since then VW has introduced the Jetta Hybrid which is incredible. It's the first hybrid with a turbo engine and has a real gearbox (not a CVT). I encourage you to drive it. It's still no TDI, but it is a very fun vehicle and in my opinion should have been the 2013 Car of the Year.

The term "Poor Man's BMW" has been used for decades by car companies who are manufacturing vehicles that are sporty & fun-to-drive without that hefty price tag. I believe it was first used by Mazda in the 1980s with the 2-door 626. Since then, it has been used several times by other manufacturers. The Jetta's average transaction price is around $23K as compared with the 3-Series which is closer to $44K. While Jetta owners aren't "poor" they are spending much less on their cars.

Not to mention diesel engines tend to make more torque and are built to higher tolerances so it will go 250,000+ miles easily if you take care of it

MPG, right? Haha, yeah I agree with you, diesels are the way to go. They simply do a better job, don't require batteries, performance levels are out of this world as compared to hybrids, last a hell of a lot longer, and they have a better resale value also, they're great!

#3 environment. Gasoline produces 19.6 lbs of CO2 (not that that is a pollutant, as it is NOT) per gallon, where as diesel produces 20.1. BUT the diesel car will get nearly double the gas mileage so you use less fuel and therefore put out less CO2.

@mnkySee That's what it stands for in Gasoline cars. for diesel its Turbo diesel injection. I mean, it only makes sense.

I'm not trying to take anything away from this solid review, but... TDI = Turbocharged Direct Injection

Dude, VW uses complex exhaust filters and ultra low sulfur fuel on the Jetta TDI, this is a 'clean diesel" vehicle not a noisy school bus. I mean your right diesel pollutes but not as much when used in this vehicle.

I considered buying this car.

Not to mention more torque than a gasoline engine.

THE SAVING IS TOO LITTLE TO HAVE ANY IMPACT. WITH THE GASOLINE, YOU DON'T HAVE TO PUT UP WITH A COMPLICATED ENGINE THAT ONLY A FEW MECHANIC CAN WORK ON, AND, YOU DON'T HAVE TO PUT UP WITH THE NOISE FROM THE ENGINE BAY. THE DIESEL IS NOISY WITH A LOT OF VIBRATION. THE TINY SAVING ADVANTAGE THE TDI DESIEL HAS OVER THE REGULAR GASOLINE IS TOO MINIMAL TO HAVE ANY FINANCIAL IMPACT.

ever owned a tdi VW ? your opinion , is just that.

WOW, a little information can send you in many wrong directions. Your first line "Diesel is less watered down" is ridiculous in its first place as anyone who works on diesels knows that water, ANY water in a diesel is bad. #2, Diesel is made out of what is left after you crack the crude for refining gasoline. Gasoline takes much more refining (read as more ENERGY) to refine than does diesel. Both are made at the same time using some of the same equipment however.
