Sorry about that, the problem was two things, a damaged cam phaser/adjuster and that's hard to show on camera. This all came from a check engine light for cam sensor fault.

My expedition had a slight noise , nothing concerning but got worse after oil change , and now it sounds like a diesel, about how much would a mechanic or you charge to do something like this ? Changing chains and necessary parts while open
@willpoweredgarage9697 ай бұрын
Sorry to hear, Not sure how an oil change would do that other than a moment of no oil pressure and the chain rattling and breaking the guides from slapping around. This repair cost about $1600-$2,000 to repair parts and labor in NY. Parts are between $600-1,000.00 .

Wow no one ever mentions the roller cam followers are defective and eventually pop out the click on a cold start up mine has been doing it for years and finally popped out on cylinder 7 melling has the updated ones i bet if you knew that you would have dropped them in when your cam was pretty much out.

😂 this video just made me feel a lot better about paying someone else to do it hahaha. Im having problems..2010 5.4, 288,000 miles. Diagnostic shows that although i have good oil pressure, bank 2 isnt getting enough pressure...doing a couple things the mechanic suggested, but will probably need at least the v solenoid...just gonna do the whole thing since you have to take it all apart. Other than this issue she's still a strong running truck. Lol. Im a mechanically inclined woman, but not a mechanic. Smart enough to know when to call in the pros lol

I get it 100%!! I know it may look scary but it is not really a difficult repair, just looks that way. The best advice i can give is to use a high quality kit. Factory is best. I have had recent failures with the Clotes kits breaking the chain guides. Also, That millege is impressive! Keep that baby going!!

Got a question, When i loosened the phaser on the left side i was holding it with a channel lock, but it slipped and spun about an inch before catching again and and holding. I was able to turn it back to the original position with the channel lock. My question is, If i screwed up something when it originally turned, when i turned it back or if I can just continue to put it together?

Just curious if you were able to get it all back together after our discussion.

Never use synthetic blend oil. Only use full synthetic. Blend is only 10% synthetic. I switched to Castrol blend and my VVT started acting up. I'm back on Mobil 1 full synth.

My Suggestion is if you are in there for this issue they are only a few more $, Do them. Cause to replace them the valve cover needs to come off. Just make sure to buy quality ones. I prefere OEM!

How did you manage to keep the the cam in place with out removing the roller followers?
@willpoweredgarage96911 ай бұрын
Carefully. What I really did was use a wrench to turn the cam until the spring tension was off. When I was installing the new chain I turned the cam back where it needs to be to be in time. I found removing them an extra step thats not needed, if you are carefully not to let the cam spring back. It can/will cause the valves to hit the pistons.

**The most important thing about this job is the timing marks and you failed to show how they lined up!!!

Did you take out the roller followers? Is it necessary
@willpoweredgarage969 Жыл бұрын
No I did not. I believe they say to remove them so the cam does not rotate without the chain on and potentially damage the valves. It is a good idea, but if you do not just lock the cam somehow until the new chain is on.

How do you rate the cloyes tensioners, guides, sprockets and chains. I have heard differing opinions.. I know the makaloco dude recommendes nothing but oem.
@willpoweredgarage9699 ай бұрын
Well, i recently had it come back because of two broken chain guides. Luckily, there was no major engine damage. I work mostly on VW and Audi, and I only use OE parts when it comes to timing components.

@willpoweredgarage969 This is my main concern. I've used Cloyes and Melling for older vehicles many times,but everything I read says use only OEM for 3 valve engines. However the cost of OEM vs aftermarket is ridiculous.

@@willpoweredgarage969 That's concerning. What do you think caused the failure of the chain guides. Tensioner failure or low quality guides?
