TQ for making this video. I was trying to determine if the ball joint on the upper ctrl arm can be replaced without replacing the whole ctrl arm.

Sorry I just saw this, no it can't be replaced without the whole arm.

I have a 2012 Kia Sorento suspension looks identical, it has clunking/squeaky sound coming from the rear passenger side when driving over crappy roads, I replaced the shocks,links, and lateral arm, I thinking on changing the lower control arm and the lateral link, I don’t need to drop the whole frame correct? Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated thanks.
@PhillipBailey2 жыл бұрын
I'd have the suspension components checked at an alignment shop before firing more parts at it. It needs to be inspected at ride height. A drive on hoist helps. Good luck.

Is there any way to get the lower control arm out and replaced without dropping the rear subframe? Cut it up in pieces? I'm in the middle of replacing the wheel bearings and had to take the knuckle off, which was stuck on the upper control arm, so had to chop the bolt off to get the knuckle off.
@PhillipBailey2 жыл бұрын
The lower arm can be replaced without dropping the subframe but not the upper. The adjuster bolts on the lower arm tend to seize into the bushings. I've had to cut the bolts with a sawzall.
@RPXIII2 жыл бұрын
@@PhillipBailey Thanks Phillip, do you have to remove the lower control arm/spring to be able to drop the subframe? I have right side fully dissaembled and the frame drops easily, nothing removed on the left side, seems like the sprint and lower control arm are preventing subframe from being lowered
@PhillipBailey2 жыл бұрын
@RPXIII no you do not. As you lower the rear subframe the coil springs will unload.
@RPXIII2 жыл бұрын
Hey Phillip, and now my subframe will not drop 🤦🏽. The rear bolt is seized in the bushings. Will not budge. I'm trying to put a pickle fork between the frame and subframe and no luck. Any advice?
@PhillipBailey2 жыл бұрын
@RPXIII other than a bigger power bar I have no suggestions. Is it twisting at all? Using a propane torch on the end of the bolt may help. Don't start a fire and have a fire extinguisher on hand not really. Pickle fork won't work for sure.

About how much does this job usually cost? Including parts. I have a 2011 that I'm sure needs all the rear end replaced. Kinda like this video
@PhillipBailey2 жыл бұрын
Given the fact that most of the fasteners will need to be cut off with a Sawzall I would never give a firm quote. Whatever time it takes. This one took around 5 hours plus parts.

Great video ! QUESTION : My sonata 2010(similar suspension as this Santa Fee ) has 90,000 miles. How long should my rear upper control arms last ? There is no sign of deterioration so far. Just curious to find out how many miles my rear upper arms should last..THKS !
@PhillipBailey3 жыл бұрын
That depends on the road conditions and driving surfaces. Keep an eye on the rear wheels. when they start to camber in at the top (tilt inwards), it's time.

How do I figure out what the ride height is if the rear suspension is already dismantled?
@PhillipBailey2 жыл бұрын
Not sure I understand your question.
@bobdhitman2 жыл бұрын
@@PhillipBailey in your video you commented to set the control arms at ride height. How do know what that height is since the subframe is off and can’t take measurements of what ride height is? P.S. it’s 3am and I’m just laying down after working on my Santa Fe for 9hrs tonight which was after working for 10hrs at work today. I also put in 7hrs last night. I appreciate your video!! It helped tremendously.
@PhillipBailey2 жыл бұрын
@@bobdhitman it doesn't have to be exact. Just kinda estimate where the control arm is when tge vehicle is on the ground. This way the control arm bushings won't be stressed as they actually twist during suspension movement.
@jeremiahmullins8016 Жыл бұрын
So basically you’re saying as long as you don’t tighten them hanging down you want to tighten them at more at a even position only reason I’m asking because I’m in the process of doing my 2011 right now
@bobdhitman Жыл бұрын
@@jeremiahmullins8016 - that’s what I did. Otherwise they’ll most likely fail prematurely. My issue was not knowing exactly where to set them at so I reinstalled everything and place paint marks at normal position on the ground. Then installed the new ones to match the paint marks. Lots of fucking around and finding out. I know it’s a big job, keep your stick on the ice.

That's pretty tough without more information. What kind of noise? Grinding, clunking, humming, knocking etc. Just as you apply the brake or when slowing down. A visual inspection is in order as it might be obvious what's up.

@@jtay214 that's pretty vague. It would be best to take it to a reputable tech and go for a road test with him and point out exactly what noise your experiencing. Without hearing this noise I can't recommend anything sorry.

@PhillipBailey3 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean. Ride height is not adjustable and based on the coil springs. Camber and toe needs to be adjusted on an alignment machine.

@@PhillipBailey You said the bolts for the rear upper control arm must be tightened at ride height. @davesenenko6509 (and i) are asking how did you get the control arm to be at ride height before you tighten the bolts?
@PhillipBailey Жыл бұрын
@made2trade846 before attaching the upper ball joint move the control arm so that it's close to where it will be when sitting on the ground. Tighten the bushing bolts now. Once the bonded bushing bolts are tight connect the upper ball joint. Hope this makes sense
