What's not to love about this car at used prices? Dead reliable, super efficient, and still has that bit of comfort/luxury/quality that is a cut above the typical econosedan. It is borderline the perfect commuter car.
@deborahhayes8252 жыл бұрын
My understanding is it's still sold in Japan but not in the US. We bought a used 2010 one from Carmax in 2014 that was in perfect condition for $21K. We were told that it had been a no-smoking company car. I love it and we will just run it into the ground before replacing it. We got it because I had slugged commuting from Fredericksburg VA to Washinton DC for 15 years and Interstate 95 had already ruined my back with the vibration so smooth riding was a big deal to me. While slugging, I had ridden in nearly every car model in production. The Lexus was by far the most comfortable so when I decided to drive myself for the commute, we went looking for a used Lexus. I didn't even realize it was a hybrid when I test drove it, that was an added bonus. I also loved the look of it and it's a lot bigger in both front and back than you would guess. It very comfortably seats 4, and even over 6 ft men had enough leg room front and back. The driver was right that it gets mid 30 mph mileage but that was great at the time. It is so quiet so when you are idling, I sometimes think it has died because there is NO NOISE. I retired from the commute in Dec 2016 so don't put many miles on it now, just running locally. It has 118,600 miles so far and we haven't really done anything to it but replace a battery. That was because it was so quiet after pulling into the garage and stopping that I forgot it was on and left an interior light on for 5 days. It still runs like a top and we recently had it detailed. The detailer said it looked like new. (We are non-smoking, no kids). The only thing I didn't like was it was black so we had a vinyl wrap put on in a brilliant blue that I get compliments on all the time. No only do I like the color better, but it protects the pain from scratches. Every time we take it into the dealer for something like a recall, they want to buy it from us immediately but as I said, we won't let it go, we'll just drive it until it's unfixable.

I have two of them..a regular and premium. Both awesome...loaded with tech on premium (HUD) radar control CC, comfy, somewhat sporty (sport mode) to drive for an economy car. Both have over 150K and zero maintenance...just oil and tires. Can't say enough about the VALUE of this model. I have a Prius as well (and an F150 crew cab..other extreme!) HS250 is so much nicer than the Prius, no comparison at all. Love all three hybrids and with three kids in school and driving all over the place for sports great to hop in and go. Never a breakdown. I can tell this guy was ready to hate it but it grew on him in this review.

I also have this car. It's a 2010 and has 134k miles. I have gotten 37 38 mpg on some trips. It is a nice quiet ride. I had owned 3 Prius' 2005 (new) 2007 (used) and 2013 (new). I did find out shortly after buying the hs250 that one of the front headlights had not been seated properly and melted the place that is supposed to hold it. Lexus said they could replace the light ... for about $600. My own mechanic charged me less than $50 to fix it. Maintenance has been routine oil changes and rire rotations. Wiper blades new tires, brakes. Spark plugs just changed for 1st time at 130k. I have been happy with it. One thing that just happened today when I turned on the engine, the display screen only opened a bit. I want to get that fixed. If I knew how to fix it I would.
@Toymonkeyjr3 жыл бұрын
mom bought one when it had 40k miles warranties and dealership maintenance records included for 20k, the car was pretty loaded with options too with very nice seat material and the more desirable interior and exterior color. it has more then 150k now nothing more then regular oil change, and maintenance schedule and nothing has gone wrong with it, still drives the exact same and gets good fuel economy, and trust me the car wasn't grandma'd it has been pushed decently hard with aggressive traffic in the city and still holding it together. Haven't had to replace hybrid battery yet and the actual car battery was just swapped. Transmission is still solid, surprising for a cvt. Engine is doing great no loss of power, still hits 0-60 in less then 9 seconds which is more then practical, the interior feels homely and comfortable and good size for 4 average size adults, I've done trips with 5 and it's tight but not uncomfortable. 18-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rear and sideview mirrors, a power tilt-telescoping steering wheel, driver memory settings, heated and ventilated front seats, real wood cabin accents and upgraded leather upholstery, cruise control lane keep assist, 8way power seats with lumbar support adjustments that can lean back almost flat. really good infotainment system for a 2010 car, ahead of it's time minus carplay. This is the car that hybrids of the last generation tried to be, I would sacrifice 40-50mpg for a 35mpg luxury car with toyota reliability. you can buy these in condition now for 8-12k !
@th3m3du542 жыл бұрын
I think it has a planetary gear set, which is completely different to a CVT and much more reliable. No belts and less moving parts. The planetary gear set in the Toyota/Lexus Hybrids is a gem. Smooth and reliable. Fun fact: the new Ford Maverick Hybrid has the same transmission and will also probably last a good while 💪🏻
@Toymonkeyjr2 жыл бұрын
@@th3m3du54 Yeah I never cared to look into that, but it is definitely smoother then a tradition cvt, it's the best one I've driven and I'd place it just above hondas cvt, but for a 12 year old car... not bad.

This car is my daily driver since 2012, the only difference being I have the premium trim with navigation pop-up screen, lane assist, heads up display, etc. Excellent review and you really nailed it on the head when you said this car would make a good city driving type vehicle. Another words, this car is not a good choice for lengthy road trips! Drawbacks of this vehicle are numb steering, mushy brakes, very pokey acceleration and the electrical and hybrid system seem especially vulnerable to frigid temperatures. Having said all that, this car has been a good choice for my lifestyle and driving habits in a sprawling metropolis.

@damilolaakanni9 ай бұрын
@@thesparklingwater7400no, not based on the Corolla. The platform is shared with the Scion TC (same as the 2009-2018 Toyota Avensis sold in EU and Japan).
@roochiecooch4 жыл бұрын
Ok you are half right about the car being based off the Prius. That statement might confuse and mislead some potential buyers. This actually uses the same hybrid drivetrain and gasoline engine as the Camry hybrid and highlander hybrid of the time. Then you have to account for the extra weight from the much higher density of sound deadening. Extra weight in interior luxury add ons. So for the weight and larger 2.4 engine and slightly larger than compact size. It’s not quite a midsize but not quite as small as a compact. And actually I get closer to 38 or 39 mpg City and Highway. I don’t know if it’s because mine is lowered 2 inches. Because I know lowering a car does help aerodynamically. But I love this car. As a postmates/doordash/grub hub driver, this is amazing. Mines paid off and so insurance is dirt cheap. I got mine used for $8,300 with 88,000 miles on it. Now the Lexus that has the same drivetrain and gasoline engine as the Prius is the Lexus CT200h which I also happen to own lol. I drive that one more because around town I get nearly 60 mpg unless I’m carrying a full car of passengers. Then it drops to about 57/58. Anyway, I just wanted to clear that up for people. That this car (HS250h) has the same hybrid system and engine as the Camry Hybrid with and actually weighs 90 pounds more in both models base configuration, 2010 Camry Hybrid = 3680 lbs, 2010 Lexus HS250h 3770 lbs. It can actually go up depending on trim though. I think the heaviest HS250h is 3850 lbs. Thats considerable additional weight and explains why it gets the 34/35 hwy/city mpg rating. Still I appreciate you making the video explaining the car to people. Both my Lexus hybrids have been problem free. Both are lowered and have sporty wheels (bbs on both) and both do not look like typical hybrids. This is the main attractive part to me. I wasn’t screaming to people that I have a hybrid. In fact I debadged both cars. So they look like typical gasoline only cars. I like that about them. I definitely recommend these cars on the used market. When buying them though consider that eventually the hybrid system will have some sort of failure. Either the battery pack, or the generator at some point. Usually well over 100,000 miles, probably closer to 200,000 or so. So I would recommend getting one with between 75,000 and 100,000 miles. Try and stay away from 145,000 miles and up vehicles. As you will only have 50,000 or so miles before you’re basically waiting for something in the hybrid system to fail. Toyota/Lexus make great mechanically engineered products. At this time they were still learning a great deal about hybrids. Since then they have improved drastically in efficiency and longevity. So expect them to still have that Toyota/Lexus reliability. Do expect some sort of hybrid system failure at some point in very high mileage examples. I mention this because the generator cannot be replaced without removing the transmission at the very least but, most instructions require the shop to remove the entire engine and transmission together with the subframe to replace. That is a lot of labor. Probably between $2000 and $3000 in labor and about $1500 to $2500 for the parts themselves. Batteries are usually a bit easier to deal with but still expensive and still something my to consider. As they are big heavy and carry quite a bit of power through them.

This is a very informative and detailed review! Thank you for your intake, I came across this car on carfax this morning in the discontinued section, the gas mileage is what caught my eye. I’m curious how many miles does yours have on it now, what repairs have you needed on it and what year is it? Does yours have any oil consumption issues? I found one today for $12,000 with 76,000 miles. There’s been 2 previous owners on the HS 250h I’m looking at and the oil changes/maintenance on the vehicle has been perfectly maintained. I intend on using this vehicle part/full time for Lyft, would you recommend it? Sorry for all the questions but lastly do the seats fold down in yours and do you find trunk space to be too small or just adequate?

From the MotorWeek review of the HS when it first came out, they said it was based on the European market Toyota Avensis (which itself is a "tweener", bigger than the Corolla but not as large as the Camry), which is also related to the Scion TC which you're more familiar with. The TC got its engine from the Camry throughout its production run, so it only made sense that they'd use one of the Camry engines for the HS.

I actually found a 2011 or 2012 on CarMax today. Due to their nearly unfathomable algorithm for determining a selling price, I wasn't sure which surprised me more, that they even had one for sale or the asking price. This, and it's " follow-up ", the CT200 were incredible misses for Lexus. The HS looks a bit awkward/too narrow, while the CT was a concept (A sporty hybrid) never fully realized. I am tempted to find one of these for its reliability and longevity but even the CT seems like a much better idea. It certainly is less dorky looking.

But I have an opportunity to getting into and it has 75k miles on it. Not too concerned about the 33-35 MPG figure I've read and you talked about, but I'm sure it's doing 28 MPG without issues. Any other known issues that could deter a purchase other than the recalls that Lexus would still fix that I've read about? The biggest thing I've read is something that you mentioned, is that the HS 250h doesn't feel much like a Lexus. Thanks again responding to the previous question I had about the LS460. I'm sure this is more reliable since it's essentially a hybrid Camry. Thank you!

I would be cautious about buying a 150k mile version with ten years on it. No used warranty will cover the $2500 hv battery at that age or the $3000 brake booster/abs system which are known to fail (its a brake by wire system that allows regen first and manual hydraulics only as emergency hard brake failsafe). Most hv batteries start to fail in the 175K-200k range and the cheaper "rebuilt" options are simply a mix and match of "better" used battery modules. The cars can be deceptive in that Toyota quality still looks and drives good at high mileage but some of the hybrid components can quickly add $5k worth of headaches.

I have a fully loaded Prius from the same year. I can say that the interior is nearly identical in terms of layout and features other than the Prius having a little more interior space. I live in Hawaii and there are actually a decent amount of HS 250s on the road. I also own an es. Drive the Prius bc the amount of traffic to work and school. NO PRIUS SLANDER HERE. I did have to replace the hybrid battery recently at around 100k miles which sucked but I factored that into the cost when I purchased the vehicle in the off case that it would crap out on me since I got a really good deal. If you live in a congested area you can't go wrong with a Toyota economy car. Love the videos.

I got mine used, 2012, in August 2024, with 128k miles. Everything is ok, except burns almost 1qt of oil at every 5k miles, and there is a little bit of engine knocking during 5 to 15 mph acceleration. How to fix this detonation problem, does anyone know? 😢
@JohnSmith-pl2bkАй бұрын
The oil consumption points to worn rings; especially the oil control rings being clogged up...maybe too extended oil change periods in it's history. The detonation (knock) is the degradation in "knock resistance" caused by oil mixing with the fuel in the combustion chamber and "pinging" under high pressure caused by trying to accelerate. As an experiment try premium high octane fuel and see if this dampens down the knocking under acceleration. The solution to the oil burning is usually new piston rings... but a cheap try would be to replace the PCV valve which may be clogged up by the blow by from the worn rings... and may be contributing to the oil consumption by overpressuring the sump/crankcase pushing even more oil into the cylinders..... See YT vids on this replacement of a relatively cheap part. Also change to a very good quality synthetic oil; this may loosen up the oil control rings of the pistons and allow more oil to be scraped off the cylinder walls and not getting into the cylinder and being burnt up/causing knocking... In future change the oil at 5000 miles maximum and filter, too. You are trying to keep this car going until the inevitable overhaul, engine replacement or scrapping.....
@geekmega7527Ай бұрын
@JohnSmith-pl2bk thank you so much for your advice, sir! BTW, the assumption that is burning oil was debunked. My last oil change place simply didn't add enough. I did the last oil change myself , and after 4,200 miles, the oil level is still 👌 full. If the knocking is reduced with premium fuel, what could be the fix? I hope it isn't more premium fuel, as it is expensive!

The luxury hybrids in North America were a new market at the time. It was actually pretty successful in Japan, but it was evident what the North American customers want when sales of the HS dropped significantly after the CT released a year later. They were pretty much saying: "what is the point of a luxury hybrid if the highway mpg is only a little better than a gasoline-only car, and we cannot bring our mother-in-laws to say positive things behind our backs?" The HS was very well made, but it just really did not excel in anything: 1) Looks -> CT 2) MPG -> CT 3) Practicality -> CT 4) Fun to Drive -> CT 5) Dimension -> Camry Hybrid 6) MSRP Price -> Camry Hybrid
@charlescasto42264 жыл бұрын
It’s not based on the Prius. It’s based on the Toyota Camry hybrid. Please do a little more research before making this type of video. It does no service to you or the car.
@MeynMotorGroup4 жыл бұрын
having an engine from a camry does not mean that it is based on a Camry, before correcting others you should take your own advice and look in a mirror
@charlescasto42264 жыл бұрын
Exhaust Sports Auto it most certainly does. It it’s the hybrid drive directly out of the Camry. 100% not the Prius. All of his comparisons were almost directly compared to the Prius. Which there is not one reason to do. The body is not from the Prius and neither is the power train.
@MeynMotorGroup4 жыл бұрын
You're back after not understanding what the term "based" off of means in the automotive world. Based means architecture, platform, chassis, ask Car And Driver what this is based off of and they will tell you Prius. A drivetrain is an engine and a transmission not what a vehicle is based off of or built off of. Why can't people just admit they're wrong apologize and move on
@charlescasto42264 жыл бұрын
Exhaust Sports Auto wrong again. The h250 and the hybrid Camry are both 3600 pounds and the same drivetrain. Wanna guess what doesn’t weigh 3600 pounds? If you look at Wikipedia on this car the Prius isn’t mentioned once. Interesting... I know this has hurt your feelings. But honestly how about you learn from it.. you don’t know it all and you will not. Just like I don’t. But I know know about this car and I know all about the Prius I owned and maintained. I’m not saying this is a Camry. Just that it has the same drivetrain. You made mpg comparisons... that was unfair to the Lexus. If you want to compare that it should have been to the Camry hybrid same weight and same drivetrain. Then noise... same same. You are a good reviewer.. just need to make sure you are comparing apples to apples if you are going to compare.
