At 14:3, thank you for mentioning that it took a long time to get the seat out of the vehicle. There are a lot of shop owners and managers in the industry that tell their techs if it takes longer than 20 minutes to diagnose a problem, they don't know what they are doing. The problem is the techs need their job and have to put up with that type of abusive nonsense which stresses them out and erodes their self esteem.

Now we know why so many technicians are starting their own mobile repair businesses... we get to set the time we charge to the customer and dont have to listen to the nonsense criticisms

At 3:0 , thank you for showing mode 6 and how it can be used, I have been using mode 6 as part of my diagnostic strategy since I purchased your very first edition of the Escan many years ago, the reason I am making this comment is because you would not believe the very high percentage of techs who have told me that mode 6 is completely useless and misleading.

This is a form of bullying, several of my previous employers would lie and or omit crucial information on my diagnostic assignments so that they could look smart in the end. For anyone who will be troubleshooting typical Mercedes fuel system like this 2010 GL450 or the common E-Class W212 , there are a few hardware design you must keep in mind. Mercedes fuel tank is a 2 chambers saddle design. Fuel pump at RIGHT side saddle and fuel filter at LEFT side saddle. These 2 chambers do not parallel or share fuel between each other when fuel level down to 80% or lower. So the fuel pump has 2 duties. 1st is to supply fuel to engine via a fuel filter and 2nd duty is to provide jet suction effect at LEFT chamber , to pump fuel back to RIGHT chamber into the fuel pump bowl shaped body. There is a Y valve splitting the fuel flow. Yes ODD design but that is the way it is to clear drive shaft from tranny to differential, hence the saddle shaped 2 chambers fuel tank design. Without the 2nd duty, the RIGHT chamber will be deprived of fuel fast when overall fuel tank level is 50% or less. There are 2 fuel level sensors too, LEFT and RIGHT side ones. So do not base a proper fuel output of fuel pump without taking into account the 2nd duty of the fuel pump, there then you can get the NET fuel flow to the fuel filter aka to the engine. The fuel filter element inside the fuel filter assy itself is no more than 36ish grams of paper media weight. So at best the fuel filter will be clogged by contamination worth 36 grams. This GL450 is using M273 V8 4.7 Liter engine, I believe so. At 17MPG and 50,000 miles , if fuel dirt is at 5PPM (parts per million) or 0.005% by weight, the near 3,000 gallons of total fuel passing thru the filter element would have 37 grams of dirt captured. To believe that gasoline can be 100% clean without any dirt % from various fuel transfer procedures is a fantasy. To replace fuel pump first before replacing a fuel filter is a joke. Using MB Xentry or any MB capable scanner like Autel or Launch, the fuel pressure at the filtered output of the fuel filter can be read from N118 module and it will be higher by approx 10-15 psi when compared to the engine bay test port, this is normal as from tank to engine bay the small fuel line running 4 meters and elevation of 50cm does offer HEAD/resistance. Happy troubleshooting guys..... PS - I replaced my W212.065 E400 M276.820 3.0 Turbo direct injection, fuel filter at 20,000 miles or approx 1,200 gallons of fuel burnt. No trouble codes whatsoever, but I do monitor my low pressure fuel pressure often while at WOT 1st gear and 2nd gear. Knowing my developing country fuel cleanliness is not as good as 1st world countries, extra caution must be practiced. The test result showed at WOT 1st and 2nd gear, I was getting only 4.2 BAR at HP fuel pump inlet and that is borderline decent. New fuel filter brought it back to 5 BAR. The Bosch 200 BAR HP fuel pump on my engine requires minimum of 4 BAR as input pressure. The fuel filter element has not clogged in anyway fatal, but it has trapped enough dirt to cause decreased fuel flow. Don't ever fuel starve a Bosch single piston GDI HP fuel pump, the fuel itself is the pump's single piston only lubrication internal to the pump. Engine oil lubrication does not touch the HP fuel pump internal, only the external spring get the engine oil lubrication.

Great video as always! I know all to well that you can only do what work the customer authorized. BUT, unless the customer said absolutely not, what professional shop in their right mind would replace a fuel pump and not put a filter in too? Myself personally, I've even gone as far as recommending replacing the fuel pump relay because as much as it gets used and switches on/off and so forth....

Any chance you can make a video explaining mode6. There are some ignorant individuals claiming that mode 6 is useless and misleading causes misdiagnosis and unnecessary parts replacement. The mode 6 on the Escan is the best one out there and it provides another piece of the puzzle when performing difficult diagnosis.

The parts cannon would've sufficed in this case, had there been no inline fuel filter beyond the pump's sock filter which is what you find with most cars nowadays. Of course, nothing beats knowing how to properly diagnose and repair as once again demonstrated by Bernie.

If the first repair shop only did what they said they did all of this could have been avoided. So many rip off repair shops out there consumers don't know who to trust. The worst part is the good ones suffer.

Hey Bernie , so I’m confused because on the diagnosis you said that the. Fuel filter was clogged but then in the end you said that the shop that was working on the car prior did not put a fuel filter in , so the fact that the car DID NOT have a fuel filter was causing the car to have fuel delivery issue? Not understanding this one ..

What the FIRST shop needs is two signs : IDIOTS at WORK and Rip Offs at Work . That customer should stand on the sidewalk and hand the customers copies of the bill on the filter . Then the SECOND bill from shop #2 . All while wearing the Rip Off sign . It's not libel , it's TRUTH !
