How did you drain the tank? Great video! You just saved me a lot of money!

Very helpful, thank you! I have the flex fuel version and noted some differences: -the pump is different and $350+ -there’s an additional fuel line which must be disconnected along with the electrical connection before dropping the tank -the tank can be lowered approximately 8”, allowing access to remove connections -it’s more difficult in real life! Especially if the truck’s been used on dirt roads.

Do you know if you can install a regular one in a flex fuel model?
@jacobfelton69484 жыл бұрын
Ethan Maheng I don’t know. The flex fuel pump is better suited to handle ethanol, which will destroy the regular pumps if you do run E85. The fuel gauge may not function properly if the electrical output from the float isn’t identical. If you run E10 (regular gas) or E0 (ethanol free gas) you probably won’t have a problem, assuming the connectors are the same, but it’s a gamble unless you directly compare the specs.

@@N-Scale Not sure if you are aware. The 38 gallon tank will only allow you to use 32 gallons. The other 6 are meant to keep the fuel pump cool. I have friends who learned that the hard way.

Great video Dan. Well shot and explained! And very much appreciated. Do you have a recommendation of the specific part for replacing the fuel sending unit? Thanks again.
@DantheFixitMan5 жыл бұрын
Hi Scott, Thanks for the very nice comment. That means a lot coming from a filmmaker like yourself. I would normally recommend using a Toyota OEM fuel sending unit, but since that's the one that commonly fails, I might try an aftermarket one from your local auto parts store instead. I don't have a particular brand that I would recommend, but you might try some of the forums for Tundras like Tundrasolutions.com or tundratalk.net to see if anyone has a recommendation there. Best of luck to you, Take care, Dan the Fix it Man

Does the truck have to be lifted up to have room to remove the tank?
@DantheFixitMan6 жыл бұрын
No, I didn't need to lift it at all to get underneath and get it done. This truck was also stock suspension.

the part where the float arm, gauge, etc. is supposed to be attached to the pump is not attached. I see how it should attach, but it does not stay put, any feedback on how to make it stay in place. I assume for packing reasons they didn't have it attached. No type of glue, etc. would hold up under gasoline so I need your input as to how you would recommend putting this together to fit. I do not have time to wait for another pump, I need this repaired as soon as is humanly possible. I do have a picture but don't know how to send it so you can see what it looks like.

Sorry to get back to you so late. I am not getting all of the comments in my inbox like I used to. Is it the flex fuel model? I have read that several people are having issues with hard starting on tundratalk.net. If it is the flex fuel model, they can reflash the computer which seems to solve the problem. Best of luck to you. -Dan the Fix it Man

My tundra kept running out of gas at 1/4 tank and took it in . The sensor was bad and they said I needed to change out the fuel pump as well . Is this normal to have to pump changed out ? It has 100000 miles on it . Almost 1200$ in repairs .. hope to hear from you soon thanks !
@DantheFixitMan5 жыл бұрын
The fuel level sensor/sending unit is really what usually goes bad on these trucks. It’s pretty common from what I have read. If the truck is still running fine the fuel pump is probably fine. But since the job involves taking out the fuel tank, I can see why someone would recommend changing the entire fuel pump assembly at the same time. But, If you have the option to just change the sensor, I might go that route. My 2004 tundra still has the original pump with 285,000 miles. Thanks for watching! -Dan the Fix it Man
@Kmccray8885 жыл бұрын
@@DantheFixitMan Yeah they recommended it be changed. I just wanted to make sure. The truck runs great just would run out of gas at 1/4 tank. I'll just get the fuel pump changed out since it does higher mileage . I'm just surprised they didn't give me the option and the work is already done. they said they couldn't order the parts separately which, thinking about it now, they can. Oh well, lesson learned and now It's fixed which is good. I'll watch your videos prior to taking to the shop next time. Thank you for the advise, I REALLY appreciate it !

Katie McCray my 2010 is doing the same thing. Acting “empty” when it still shows 1/4 tank. I’ve not let it go below half tank since it started that. But a couple times while parked in line to pick up kids from school, it idle flutters like it wants to shut off. I’m afraid it’ll die at most inopportune time. I’m researching if changing the fuel filter and/or the fuel pump would help. Anyone have any input that might help me?
