CNN's Rosemary Church talks to Matt Alt, who experienced the earthquake in Japan.
2011 Japan Earthquake - Tsunami Fast Facts
Here’s a look at the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in March of 2011.
March 11, 2011 - At 2:46 p.m., a 9.1 magnitude earthquake takes place 231 miles northeast of Tokyo at a depth of 15.2 miles.
The earthquake causes a tsunami with 30-foot waves that damage several nuclear reactors in the area.
Number of people killed and missing
(Source: Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency)
The combined total of confirmed deaths and missing is more than 22,000 (nearly 20,000 deaths and 2,500 missing). Deaths were caused by the initial earthquake and tsunami and by post-disaster health conditions.

i am japanese and remember this earth quake as one of my first memories at age 4. my mum was pregnant and we were walking down to the donut shop near our house. the ground started shaking like crazy and people started screaming. i remember clinging onto my mum and she told me to stay calm and a construction worker gathered everyone close and far away from the scaffolding. my dad later told me when he was at work the sky scraper swayed and all the computers slid off the desk he thought he was going to die. my little sister was at nursery and she still has anxiety about that till this day. my dad went to go and help the worst affected areas and he took some photos of the destruction. i look at it now and the tragedy of the disaster with a strange feeling

Late comment but you guys should take into account that measuring the magnitude of earthquakes takes time. The jma took a long time since they never knew that earthquakes more than magnitude 8.4 could happen, (e.g. the nankai trough south of japan was proposed to be the strongest, but as it turns out the fault line off sendai could cause it.)

I remember feeling the Earthquake all the way from western NY, I was in college sitting at my desk, and we were wondering if everybody felt that. It was a small shake but it was enough to catch our attention. Then I looked on the news later that day and found out that an Earthquake happened near Japan. It was weird.

It is you can clearly see the shadow warp in size and diameter when it reaches the white spuring water of the wave, if it were a creature it wouldnt warp like that and instead create a splash due to the impact it would create being so larger

I live in Los Angeles. We moved here after the Sylmar Quake, so the worst one I've experienced was the Northridge Quake on Jan 17th 1994. The tremor seemed to last nearly two minutes. The worst thing, to me, is the sound of 'solid' ground grinding and warping. There was all this liquefaction along an east-west corridor that paralleled Ventura Blvd, and my childhood home (where my mom still lived) didn't stand a chance. She lives in San Diego now and sleeps better at night.

Most of these tsunami waves are too close together to have any specific power, they may reach over the barriers but not enough to have any affect,it was the 3 waves that were 10 meters or 30 feet that had the major impact, they would have after subsidence of the coast have over whelmed any sea barriers.
