Really interesting to watch! I have only just started to play backgammon and I am very pleased to see them making moves I would have in their situations!!!! Gives me some hope for the strategic part of the game! :)

Yes, sometimes you must hit your opponent, even if you don't want to. If you land on a point as part of your move, and there is one opponent's checker on that point (called a blot), you must take this checker and put it on the bar. I can advise the great series for beginners on Ensor42's channel (search "Backgammon for complete beginners"). The pace is slow, but Ensor's explanation is crystal clear.

For anyone working on their game, you can get more insight into this match by downloading a .mat file from the Leuven club website, opening it in GnuBG, doing an analysis and stepping through the moves to see the alternatives etc. Gnu thinks these guys are very good. The loser made only two moves in four games that it called 'doubtful' and the winner made none. Games one and two were back and forth, tied close to their conclusions and were decided by late dice rolls.

Congratulations to Michel Lamote for reaching the final 8 in the Nordic Open 2012, probably the toughest tournament in the world.

It depends... on the setting and on the players. This setting is a final of tournament, with the ever-present added stress of the ticking clock. Even in such circumstances some players will happily chat away. These don't, it's their choice. On other boards you might see talk all the time, and the backgammon playing is secondary.

When the opponent hasn't made a lot of points in his homeboard yet, you can take more risky plays to get an advantage. If you do get hit, you should be able to come back in again easily. The strategic advantage you'd go for could be: occupying important points, building a homeboard, building a prime, or getting a decisive race lead. Once the opponent starts making points in his homeboard, you should take less risks. Balancing this risk-taking is a skill you can spend a lifetime on to master.

No, you need an empty space between. You play one die at a time so: 4 then 2 or 2 then 4.

But if he did, would it not be allowed? In the case of Wayne Rooney it could be considered unprofessional towards his teammates, but here Paulus is playing individually. The game is time-controlled with a chess-clock, so he is just using up his own allocated time. I don't think it bothered the opponent, otherwise he would have said something.

No, you can not. The sum of the dice is not relevant, you have to play number by number, and if the point are blocked, you can not move.

Hitting is not always the best move. Unfortunately there is no simple rule to decide when it is preferable or not. Actually the game is attractive just because there are no simple rules for such decisions. I advice you to play a lot to get some insights by yourself in the matter. Then you can read a beginner's book or see the KZbin channel of Ensor42.

Awful awful move with the 6-2 11:00 into the video. Definitely the move that led to him losing the match, one could say. Making his 4-point accomplishes virtually nothing and he has left Red with an easy shot to this the blot on the 10-point.

well i ll have to agree with momo. they both play very agressive game.their style maybe like that but that style will give y not easy victory and advantage to the opponent for double. i dont say they are noobs , i m saying that as i saw in the first game if he did different moves he would block the 4-4 and 5-5.. just saying..

What are you talking about? One is the Dutch champion and the other is rated Belgium's #1. You are clueless about backgammon. You're not even a rookie, but somewhere between hopeless and awful.

When was the last time a Persian won a world-class tournament? The fact that backgammon originated in Persia means nothing more than that. Chess originated in India, yet the best players are not Indian. India has 11 grandmasters. Russia, with 1/8th of the population, has 230. Even Iceland, with 1/3700th of the population, has 12. And if you believe chess also originated In Persia, Iran has only 8 grandmasters; nothing to boast about. Patriotism is one thing. Bullshit is another.
