2012 Boss 302 Gets Mods, Dyno Tune and Track Tested!

A few weeks back, Pete Epple of Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords magazine dropped by to check out our untouched 2012 Boss 302 Mustang! While he was here, we added a few modifications to help us make this thing just a little bit faster! After a round of mods and dyno tuning, we headed to the track to check out what it could do against our 2011 Automatic Ford Mustang GT with similar mods. I know your company is all about improving the Mustang and getting better numbers, but the major buyers of the Boss 302 wont modify it because it's a collectors cars and is a great vehicle already as is.

451hp/397tq That should be what they ended up with if you're wondering. The video won't show you, you have to go see the article. The article says 60hp/49tq, added to the base dyno that's the numbers I got. Still though, very impressive numbers for what it is and what mods it has. Hell an LS7 dynos at those numbers. Impressive

I'm guessing that the numbers were a bit low. Just shows that you cant just slap parts on a car and make power.

Typically no, you can't just bolt on parts and see much of a difference, factory tune will do things with spark etc. that will bring you back in line with emissions/original power (can see some small increases), but the tune that they do with parts will get you more differences (hence the 60hp and 49 lb ft at the wheels Justin mentions, which could be a bit more at the crank as loss is typically a % not a set number)

@wjpurnell That's actually how the intake/heat shield fit. It messes with your eyes, but the hood actually closes just fine, and seals well but doesn't rub, make noises or restrict airflow. Hope this helps!

By adding a tune you have ruined any possiblity of every using the Ford Track Key Tune. You would have been better off to have gotten the Track Key then all this other B/S

@KemplandN My point was the Procharger is proven already. The highest turbo car needed a shot of nitrous to make over 900whp. That was BBR's car. Built engine etc. KB has made over 800whp on the Boss as well. On a stock block. It has been done on regular 5.0 as well. I just installed a SC and made over 700whp on a stock block 5.0 on 93 octane. Will be turning it up some with E85 soon.

well i checked the description and no numbers there, i figure all those parts with a tune would be 25 to 40 hp gain pending the tuners skill set, and if they want it to last more than 5 days. so i can only guess it fell well below those numbers. unless it was just lost in the edit.

i own one of these . with some RTR parts on it. nothing crazy just bars and links a moron handle and a cat back on stock intake. that was only good for 12 hp without the intake and throttle body injectors and a tune. i am thinking about pro charging as i only like to drift and roast tires.

They made about 450 total. Which should be close to 500 at the crank. I think the boss could make 600 with more aggressive mods.

That's awesome! 60 RWHP from an intake, header, exhaust, and ECU tune?!? Wish my 99' Maxima saw gains like that with the same mods. Lol, I may have gotten 10-15 FWHP gain with same mods! :( Sad day....

Yeah, thats believed to be the in house name of the engine for the boss during early development, because a Road Runner is faster than a Coyote and they were not allowed to use the word "Boss" in any correspondence. Meep meep. Its not an official designation though, precisely because of the MOPAR reference.

So what a sec, this is about seeing what kind of power they can pick up, yet we never see if their bolt ons do a thing? I'm thinking it added near nothing or they would have shown it. Not that the boss really needs more, but all these aftermarket parts for a NA car are nearly worthless.

If you go to muscle mustangs site it shows that they gained 60hp or so.

@FIREthatMUTHAup They have technology for learning/correcting air/fuel ratio to a point, but almost every part from cold air intake and headers up to intake manifolds and cams require a custom tune for those mods from Bama Performance. This will make sure that the car runs dead-on. The 2011+ Mustangs have wideband o2 sensors so now even a mail-order tune from us can be as accurate as any dyno tune!

have you ever owned a ford mustang gt and installed a cold air intake and tuned it? this is only true for the boss 302. When jay leno reviewed his he had an engineer from ford say that the stock air box is the best that it could have. putting an exposed filter on will do nothing for the BOSS 302. if you've read reviews on AmericanMuscle(.)com where they sell a CAI with a tuner people say they never wouldve expected to get so much power from an intake. i think you should research more on this

damn i guess my 2011 5.0 was a fluke then, i installed a steeda pro-flow and used a mail order tune and it worked pretty well. after a set of bbk long tubes was added, the dyno confirmed a 50 hp jump at the rear wheels. so much for your theoretical "4-6"

Also that is a auto 5.0 with no stall or headers. If it would have been a stalled auto with headers it would have beat t he Boss.

If they still used the Windsor block they would be getting such bad has mileage that we would be paying a gas guzzler tax on the gt. push rods are out of date. My buddy has a camaro and it get 4mpg less than me in the city and on the high way.

4 valves and 4 cams later Ford finally made something of the mod motor... screw it. Wish they would've at least had an updated version of the windsor for the Boss. They should've never dropped the pushrod design.
