The loco caught up in the robbery was D326, later renamed 40126. It was sadly involved in a couple of fatal collisions both before and after the robbery; eventully it suffered total break failure hitting the back of another freight train killing a crew member, after that it was withdrawn from service in Feb 82, and later scrapped at Doncaster.

I used to do driving lessons in Leighton Buzzard and sometimes used to have a drive down to Bridego Bridge from Linslade, as the then, new bypass was on one of the test routes so would go under the bridge turn around then back up to the bypass and continue.

The driver was not "clobbered over the head to motivate him".. he was hit over the head during the taking over the of the train and taken off board.. then put back on.

You may be right. I took some snippets of info from various places to make this video, some of them may not have been correct. Or it may have been my own interpretation of the info. Thanks for commenting.

"Siding" at Cheddington? That was not a siding that was a branch line to Aylesbury closed down later in the 60's. D326 was scrapped immediately after it was decommissioned to stop people taking trophies from it. The lights behind the train don't go green until a train has cleared at least 2 more lights. Therefore trains behind it would be stopped. Thanks for posting.

Great video. I recently visited the area (December 2015). What you refer to as Sears Crossing does indeed appear to be a "crossing". However, officially Sears Crossing is a bridge (number 129) over the railway line and is a public footpath so there is public access. It states in all the books, literature etc that the train was stopped at Sears Crossing but it was stopped nearer to the place you are showing than Sears Crossing bridge - this is clear today by all the fencing that has been erected to prevent public access & further fencing on both sides of the track. The track sides at Sears Crossing bridge has no fencing. Sears Crossing is bridge number 129 & Bridego Bridge is bridge number 127. There does not appear to be a bridge number 128. Can anyone throw any light on this.

I went here a week ago, I'd been here a few times before. On one occasion, strangely, lots of grass had been cut/left by the Train robbers Bridge sign, and, a plastic toy gun was there... a bit strange as no other rubbish was dumped there other than loads of embankment waste.

Old Linslade is tto the north of Leighton Buzzard. It is Ledburn that is south between Leightton Buzzard and Cheddington.

Thanks. Sorry to be thick, what I meant was all elements of the scene no longer exist including the platform, (the tracks I understand). Also Sears Crossing 4 tracks, Bridego 2, down now blocked. Phone wires cut. Trainman catches slow goods to Chedd to raise alarm (4:30) ~ must have passed over Bridego going down on the up line, not sure about fail safe in that scene. Intrigued.

was the train on the up fast or up slow line & why didn't the driver realise that the aws indicator did not correlate with the fake red signal?
@atomiswave1971
@atomiswave1971 8 жыл бұрын
+Victor Hall Good questions, presume slow since all acts that I've seen of it the train was attacked line side from bushes. If it were the fast the robbers would have had to jump a track first. I heard a yellow was faked before the red. Some of the crew had railway knowledge. As to why the AWS didn't detect a green I don't know. But it must have been confusing for the driver given the wrong signals and data.

@oldskoolfool141
@oldskoolfool141 3 жыл бұрын
The first angle on the vid is the side they unloaded, most times (especially in dramas about the robbery or re-enactments) they show it being unloaded the other side, perhaps because it presents a better angle for the camera

@atomiswave1971

I believe that if your on a the road that runs parallel and head a tiny bit north there is a footpath leading to a walking bridge. You cannot legally get on the track from this position where the video is shot from.

Thats a long way to go. There is little there apart from the railway. Its a very reclusive spot. Cheddington station is not far but there is nothing around it.. which is bizarre in itself. Perhaps the station was there from the time the Aylesbury line existed due to the junction.. but now its just a station where one train stops per hour in each direction. The walking bridge I spoke about crosses where the actual light signal was tampered with. From other videos I've seen, the signal is no longer at that location, its been moved. But at least you can see how far down the track the train was moved before unloading the train.

Very lucky not to have caused a serious train crash by the next Up train with the false red signal. The puzzled signalman at Leighton Buzzard initially hadn't a clue of Bruce Reynolds greedy antics until about an hour later. How was Reynolds to know when the next train would be passing, or indeed if a Down train might have stopped when the robbery was taking place.

The bridge going over (if a walking bridge) is the old Sears crossing location which is now a bridge. Thats where the loco was hit with the red light. The bridge in my video is the one 800 metres along the track where the loot was unloaded from the train. The driver had to move the train approx 1/4 mile to that location.

all the clips ive seen of the robbery,show the bridge,where they unloaded the bags. itv seemed to indicate it all happened at the sears crossing bridge,they never mentioned moving the train ,at the end of the day,itv got it wrong saying this is the bridge where it happened,as the bridge didnt exist at the time,

Deliberate destruction of the “siding”, (did it need to be so obvious) along with the loco (D326) and I guess the brake van (M31016M) and the HVP (M30204M). as I can find no evidence of them being in museums. Just a thought, as the “Red” at Sears was rigged, didn’t the rest of the train provide a collision risk (and risk to life) for at least 60 mins (even at that time of night)? ...or had someone done their homework?

No lie, in the late 200o's I went to this site. some trees had been cut down. Strangely, there was a discarded 'toy' gun there - yes, I know no 'shooters' were used, but still really weird! every account differs of 'hoe much the haul would have been worth today'. The above video says $50 million. Others say £41 - 46 million. How do you really tell?
