2012 Suzuki Grand Vitara Test Drive & SUV Review

www.autobytel.c... The 2012 Suzuki Grand Vitara is a compact SUV offered by a company most known for their motorcycles. Although the Grand Vitara is not as popular in the U.S. as it is elsewhere in the World, Suzuki has given us an affordable SUV that does everything well. This SUV loves to be driven hard and can handle off-road hazards with ease. With a base price of only $19,649 the Grand Vitara is a great value.
Modern SUV's are loosing their rugged looks which are being replaced by a more sleek design. Well the 2012 Suzuki Grand Vitara keeps the boxy look which adds to its appeal. The headlights are square, the fenders have a bulge, and the rims are 18-inches in size.
The 2012 Suzuki Grad Vitara is powered by a 2.4 liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 166 horsepower and 162 lb-ft. of torque. Fuel economy figures are 19 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway. 4WD is option on most of the Grand Vitara models. And while gas mileage may suffer a bit; the Grand Vitara is a very capable off-road SUV.
A great feature on the Grand Vitara that is not very common among SUVs is the fact that this vehicle has a large rear door instead of a hatch. The door makes it easy to get stuff in and out of the Grand Vitara without having to worry about overhead clearance. In the rear there is a nice rubber floor mat instead of the usually carpet that most SUVs have. Suzuki built this vehicle to be a true multi-purpose SUV which is intended to go off-road and get dirty.
On the inside the second row seating is spacious and set a bit higher above the front seats. This gives a stadium seating feel which is cool. Up front the gauges and center stack is clean and easy to read. Things are not overly complicated or cluttered in the 2012 Suzuki Grand Vitara. The view from the driver's seat is excellent. You actually feel like you are driving a truck as the Grand Vitara sits up high.
Driving the Grand Vitara, you feel like you are driving a truck which is what you want in an SUV. The Grand Vitara is at home both on and off the road. This SUV is ready to handle the road whether it's wet, dry, or made from dirt. The Grand Vitara is surprisingly nimble thanks to its low curb weight. With most companies moving towards crossovers these days, the Grand Vitara remains a useful sport utility vehicle that you can take off road.

I purchased a new 3dr Vitara 2.4 about 2 moths ago, its really is a great vehicle, and its great to see how Suzuki havent compromised its true heritage as a 4x4 in trying to make it a girlie suv.....the engine is sweet and fast, its a great 4x4, with little to compare it with for price and class.

The 2.4. They stopped making the v6 after 2010. Still a good SUV. Drives like a small truck. I love it.

I wish Suzuki would bring the Jimny and or the 3 door Vitara over here. I had a 2001 XL-7 my mom gave it to me cuz she thought it wasn't going to last, i drove it got something newer and gave it to my grandma she wrecked it and beat the hell out of it. and it still feels tight at like 180k

I have the '08 diesel variant which looks very similar to these. fuel economy around town is 8.6L per 100km, and on the highway can go as low as 7.4L per 100km so not too bad. Performance off-road is excellent for what you pay. Driving around the city can be rather unrefined, but it really comes into it's own off-road. It's a hairy mountain goat of a car. I really like it. The stereo is terrible though. Leg room in the front is good too, I'm 6'5" and it's fairly comfortable.

the forester has a 4spd auto as well...both of these suv are very off road capable...i suspect the reason for the low gears...

I don't know why Suzuki crippled the US version. Much superior models available overseas unless Suzuki held back because of the rebadged version sold by GM (?) as well.

@digitalwolves Nope, I had a an inch or two of headroom clearance, and my legs are comfortably stretched. Usually, in other vehicles of this size, you can see my neck being cranked over, and my knees sitting higher up.

If you want a soccer moms car then there are better cars than the GV. As the presenter said at the beginning, if you want to hit the trails plus the urban jungle then the GV is a good choice.

under the Geo brand it was called "Sidekick". admittingly I don't have a clue about the Samurai name. but back in the early 90's at least in North America under the Chevy brand it was called "Tracker" that's why I was wondering about the name change under the Chevy brand.

BlackFire3 - It's always been called the "Vitara" (or the Grand Vitara) in the UK and (I believe) some other countries. The first version was called the Vitara. Then, the later versions were called the Grand Vitara. I guess they've just standardised the name between countries as was done with the Snickers bar. In the UK, that used to be called the Marathon but they changed its name here to standardise between countries.
