We British had the Mini, the Americans had the Model T, the French had the 2CV, the Italians had the Fiat 500 and now India has an equivalent for themselves; a cheap, basic car to get the masses moving. Got suggested this video today. Brought back memories! This was my first car back in 2009-10. $5000(usd vs rupee at that time) brand new for the Top trim. (all bells & whistles - if you may call that😁) Had to wait 9 months in backorder since booking in early 2009. Drove it over 60,000 kms while I had it. Floor it's gas and it holds at 110kmph.. while everyone zips past on highways .. we get an incredible laugh at ourselves. It's still parked at home back in India, as I left to travel. I wish my extended family drives it. Still works, runs great. Gives 20 kmpl mileage. In it's initial days, folks driving BMWs, porsches, Mercs used to get out of their car at fuel stations & walk up to request wanting to sit in the car and were always amazed to the amount of space it had. Sadly, mindset of the masses in India regarding a car is "buy to flex".. They'd rather be paying high EMIs and own a car that is bit more expensive(yet failed crash tests that nano passed), while not having money to fuel it up or drive around, cos even a parked expensive car for them is better than having fun in an affordable car. It's always "Log kya sochenge" (aka what would people think). They didn't want people to say "You have a cheap car". This has led to slow demise of sales & end of this gem of a vehicle.
@E50AK2 жыл бұрын
Well the latter part is untrue and a vague generalization. Since the other cars have taken over in that similar price segment (like the Wagon R, Renault Kwid, Alto, etc.) and they're some of the highest selling cars in India. So clearly the market is huge for lower segment cars and the sales are huge as well, other wise only the high end models would exist. Sure people like that exist as you mentioned, but as the data proves that not the vast majority of the car owners think that way. Infact we even see people proud of owning cheap cars, going as far as heavily modifying their altos, boleros, wagon rs, etc.

The nano is a beautiful product and people need to understand that it's built for a price and primarily built for people upgrading from scooters and mopeds for a family of 3-4 for this Tata needs a salute 👍 Everyone who says it's unsafe well what do you have to offer for the price of a nano if I may ask? Yep the answer is a no a big no at that. Future nano cars will be better and one day it will have ABS and Airbags etc at least as an option that's provided the shell structure is also strengthened.
@matthewgodwin30508 жыл бұрын
Ivan Castellino, agree, too many people misunderstand the Nano. Compared to a British small car, say a Fiesta or Corsa or something, then yes, it's nowhere near as safe. But it's not competing with those, it's concieved as an alternative, or upgrade from a Scooter / Moped, against which it is significantly safer by comparason. I certainly know where I'd prefer to be whilst driving around India. For the money, I think it's a fantastic little car.
@cisium11846 жыл бұрын

It was also very unstable, and I wouldn’t ever test drive this thing on an American road, as instant death on impact is very easy. Also, there are no fun cabin/digital features, as opposed to all the offerings and comfort levels of the Prius. Even the Chevy Spark is way better than the Nano. +EGHSRC oh, but thats because in usa, you cant retroactively make regulations on already approved automobiles. for example, it's illegal to drive with one side mirror, unless you have a older car made with one side mirror. they cant force you to change what they once allowed. but when a car like this one is made after the regulations are set, essentially disregarding the law. it's not allowed to be on the street. it makes perfect sense to do this.
@EGHSRC8 жыл бұрын
Bilb Ono I'd disagree that it makes perfect sense. The only person he puts in harms way by driving it on the road is himself. If the car was somehow a danger to other people then yes it would make perfect sense, this just boils down to a simple difference in opinion between us.
@the_original_Bilb_Ono8 жыл бұрын
+EGHSRC yes, it is a difference in opinions. an opinion that me and the western culture and usa government share.. in your opinion people should be punished for doing something that the government once said is perfectly fine to do. And not only that, but must now buy a new car or modify their exsisting car to what ever standards the government decides to set. every few years cars would become unable to drive on the road. you see this is ridiculous because the government should have made sure this car wasn't legally being sold in the first place. the car manufacturer has the responsibility of making the car correctly, thats why you have recalls.. in your world you would just be left with exploding air bags.

Love the humor in this video, especially filling it up with dancers. Tata has learned a lot from the Nano and according to websites reviewing their current line of vehicles they now make some decent "affordable" models that are selling in India and other countries. I hope Jay keeps the Nano in his collection because it is an important part of automotive history. I give Tata an A for effort.

100 salutes to Jay Leno for giving a very honest review unlike other foreigners who are expecting a Lamborgini type experience from this car and rate this as the worst car they'd ever driven. It's for somebody who drives his whole family on a scooter or a motorcycle. It's much more than a Lamborgini for him. We Indians take pride in our technology no matter how small it is. Henry Ford did not create a Ferrari when he made his first car. Only disappointment I have with Tata is their totally outdated designs. They need to hire some new talent.
@JeffDeWitt10 жыл бұрын
I was going to give you a thumbs up until you started criticizing the designers. What is wrong with the design of this car? It seems like a very good design for the market it's intended for. It's simple, practical, economical and seems to be easy to fix.

Tata is known for having relatively dull designs compared to other Indian car manufacturers. The interior of the Tata Safari for instance is a bit spartan, especially the audio system. It's one of the areas where Tata skimp on while focusing more on what makes the car suitable for its purpose. Tata is more of a function over form company, which is good considering their cars are great for their intended market, the Nano included.
@OpaSann010 жыл бұрын
Karan Agarwal I don't like the headlights but other than that I think it's quite alright. A brandnew car for 2700 dollars which even has AC is amazing.

thanks for reviewing this car. this car is built for many heartless people in India by a Big Hearted Man who thought for everyones well being just like a father or a GrandFather thinks for there younger ones in every family. but we Indians let him down for the false prestige. hardly there was no profit in Making this car, but he did it for his people. salute to him

I think it's a cute car! If only it was street-legal in the U.S. But a lot of the highways where I live have speed limits of 70 mph. If they made one that had a top speed of 80 mph, and had airbags, that would be fantastic.

So essentially the Tata Nano is the Volkswagen of India?
@siddharthabhowmik8 жыл бұрын
hmm way bigger than that ....tata owns both jaguar and land rover..and different kinds of industries... from IT to making salt.... they have every kind of buisness you can think of....
@_chan.burn.21_8 жыл бұрын
+siddhartha bhowmik Well I wasn't referring to the company's industrial size, I was more referring to the Tata Nano, in a sense, being like the original Volkswagen Beetle. Both cars are and were small, spartan vehicles that were designed to be easy to maintain, be affordable, and driven by everyone, no matter their income or social status.
