Hugh! As one of the artists at the forefront of Australian bonsai, I'd like to see more content from you yourself here. Ryan is brilliant, and teaching so many of us across the world - but Australia is lacking the tools for sharing knowledge broadly online about our native species and I truly feel that you are the person to do it.

I've really appreciated this demo of Ryan's work and the beginning of his education of growth of trees and bonsai plus+ life.

Love your teaching style. Watching this and joining in with the audience trying to answer the questions. Learning so much his way. Thanks for posting

I believe, and could be way off, but have heard it before elsewhere, that they use it on the lower trunk, to increase girth. not for the faint of heart, need to know the hows, whats, and all that before doing. I think many would be surprised at the varying techniques that are used around the world. Practice, Patience, and Passion I have grown to think are the "P's" of Bonsai...or anything for that matter. Be Well!

BeReal Relentless I think America learned this from the experiment they did where they had people live in a green house. They found out that the trees grew tall, skinny and weak because they need the stress of the wind moving them back and forth the build strength. Something the college kids could learn from.

I'm not impressed at all. don't ask the audience what front do they want. they can't see where is better Base of the tree, and the branches direction is. set where is the best position first before cutting the branches that u don't want. and your branching is very poor, what the movement of the trunk should be the same as the branches to give Harmony. I'm sure Mr.kimura will shake his head if he sees what you doing.

Good point- but... the audience can likely see better than we can on the video. More to the point, asking the audience what they think is part of his teaching style. Asking them what they prefer, what they would do is a way of getting them to think about the process- rather than just sitting there. If you happen to watch several of his demonstrations, it becomes apparent that he will make 'executive decisions', sometimes stating that he can see the tree better from his vantage point. Also, he will explain to the audience why he chooses a certain approach to the tree, regardless of what the crowd 'voted' for- but the technique allows those present to engage in the process. That said, not every teacher is best for every student.

Hi Jethro, Ryan is doing a demonstration and want's to interact with the audience. Maybe this tree finished product was not to your taste or the way the demo was conducted. From the demonstrations, I have witnessed Master Kimura or his apprentice have been very similar, they want the audience to have some influence in the tree design and are very quiet light-hearted throughout the demo, after all, they are not keeping the tree and they only had very limited time to think of what design approach. Thanks Hugh for posting, I also saw a demo by yourself recently and was thoroughly impressed.
