This is an Apple TV 3rd generation model A1469 released in 2013. This is the second generation of the third generation Apple TV. Yes, that's actually true. There's a 2012 model that's also called a third generation with a different model number. Don't get the two confused!
This Apple TV is useful for AirPlaying and usable for watching shows, using the few apps that still work...It's really slow and not the best experience. It doesn't have an app store, so downloading apps to make it more useful is not a thing! I've come to the conclusion that my old MacBook is a better apple TV than this Apple TV...

my girlfriend has one of these still, and it absolutely SUCKS, it’s slow, we only watch prime video and netflix on it, even if we can use the fucking TV to watch the same stuff AND watch youtube, but we still do. Why are we like this.

I didn’t know there was a product to separate the HDMI audio. I instead got a USB DAC that uses the optical out (for my Xbox 360, not this product)

After watching your video I pulled out my ancient Roku HD from 2010. I was surprised. While a few channels didn’t work, and it was very slow, overall the Roku was still very usable! It even has KZbin! It seems weird that your Apple TV doesn’t run KZbin, as my 4th Gen Touch can (but only through the browser).

My high school had these 2013 Apple TVs in every classroom; I got to use it back in its prime. TBH it already felt sluggish by 2015. When I graduated in 2018 - it felt dated. It was primarily used for a few rare instances when AirPlay was needed. We mostly used a direct HDMI connection to watch KZbin or stream movies - due to a better reliability and no lag/dropped frames.

I actually use a 3rd gen Apple TV regularly to watch Netflix Since Netflix decided to end account sharing I couldn’t watch it anymore on my tv over my friends account but as it turns out the Netflix version on this old Apple TV is so old that Netflix account sharing still works and it can’t be updated because there is no App Store And paying 20 bucks once for a Apple TV is way cheaper than paying 20 bucks ever month for a Netflix subscription So yeah how could have thought that’s these old Apple TVs could still be very useful today

Thank you for sharing. It saved me money to listen to it. I was about to buy a A1427 but your info about old apps made me skip it. I need to watch Netflix on an old samsung tv from 2013. I had it working until Netflix just a couple of days ago decided to block it because it is too old. It makes me wonder if a 2012 apple tv also will not work. Keep it up. I like your humor. 😁

My ex had this 3rd gen for a while when we lived together until like 2 years ago A lot of apps didn’t work but a handful did still, and airplay was the biggest factor that made it actually useful. This was a hand me down Apple TV though, personally I wouldn’t recommend ever buying one anymore, no matter how cheaply you can get it. Instead I’d recommend the 4th gen or Apple TV HD (2015). I think it’s the first model with the black Siri Remote. I’ve now been using this model daily to watch bedroom TV for a couple years now and it’s basically perfect. The only drawback is a lack of 4K, but like, Netflix and YT are capped at 1080 unless you pay extra anyway, and Crunchyroll 4K would be excessive, not to mention my TV is an old hand me down too so unless you want 4K, own a 4K ready TV, and are already paying extra for higher quality streams, then this is the only Apple TV you need tbh Everything works great, still receiving updates, it works with all Apple’s newer services, it has an App Store, and the remote is just sooooo delicious, slick black minimal design with a literal trackpad for essentially limitless navigation (also the iPhone Apple TV remote app is incredible and kind of makes the physical remote redundant, it’s better in every single way except that it’s not a physical remote, which I do like having. Anyway yeah anyone wanting a cheap but good smart TV experience, and who wants additional Apple sparkles for using with other apple devices or cloud features, then a 2nd hand 2015 Apple TV is honestly the gold standard for a typical, solid TV experience

I remember having Apple TV back in 2013 or 14. I remember having it for a couple years and watching Spongebob like every day constantly. I grew up with it essentially. Also, the TV I presently have is CRT, so 1080p would be pretty good and 4k wouldn't make a difference, even if I had an HD CRT, the most it could get would be 1080.

I grew with VHS, DVD, cable TV and renting movies at Blockbuster to watch on our 480p CRT. Going to a 1080p Plasma in 2007 blew my mind back then. Now watching HDR content on an OLED blows my mind.

"This Apple TV does not support changing the volume" - Yea, neither does a new Apple TV 4K or any apple TV for that matter. The volume control buttons on the remote change the volume on your TV the exact same way your TV's original remote does; via infrared.

You could buy one of these Apple TV remotes and then get yourself a late 2012 Mac mini use an open core Legacy Patcher to install macos Big and you can use the Apple TV to control it and you will have the best smart TV

I still use my old Apple TV! Comes in VERY handy in hotels when I want to watch movies! The KZbin music is gone, but it’s technically still there if you cast KZbin to it via AirPlay!

you mentioned that the ONLY real reason is for AIR play.... just wondering if AIRPLAY is affected by more recent versions of APPLE TV... does it? or all run the same at the same speed?. eg. Apple TV gen 1 non-4k and Apple TV 4K.

I recently grabbed one of these at a thrift store for $6. I didn't think about a remote until I got home though; oops. Anywho, I looked at the model and it's an A1427. Can you elaborate on why it's the "bad" model? Everything I've found states the only benefits as less power consumption.

I have the apple 3th gen 2nd rev, we use it only to stream stuff from the macbooks, which works very well with my macbook pro from 2012 with Ventura on it, old tech is quite amazing tbh!

I only got the apple tv to play Castlevania GOS on the apple arcade. it's the only real way to play this game for me, I don't want an iPhone hate apple myself android is so much better with freedom to do what I like, rather have my phone be like a pocket pc than a worthless iPhone. and might jailbreak the apple tv to make it play old video game after all didn't waste money on one with more than 8gb. seems to be a waste to not run a few emulators on it after I got it and a controller. got two for 25 bucks. want to setup one for a friend for a cheap retro game emulator being he isn't a pc guy. and I use my NVidia Shield for most streaming and emulation. GOS is my main goal.
