Thank you for posting. My 2016 Q5 threw a code indicating steering failure, now I know what my shop technician is talking about when he said the rack has to be replaced. The sensors or the motor built in the rack must have died on my car. It is good to know what the mechanic needs to do to fix my problem.

dear i had a flood in my area and had to change my steering rack to a used one. i have Audi A6 2012 and i replace the steering with an A7 which is compatible after checking with Audi Dubai. now the problem after doing the programming, the computer did not recognize the part and couldn't activate my steering rack. any idea what is going on. thx

Great Video, Thanks very much. After fitting the rack, did you have to get the new rack coded to the vehicle? I fitted used rack, worked great fault changed from red to yellow and steering alot lighter to turn. Yellow warning went off after learning the steering positions. The used rack lasted 2 weeks to the day, then the dreaded red warning light came back on! Any ideas why this happened? Coding? Also when using the snap on scanner it asks for a CH code (F-0000) do you know where to find this 4 digit code? Thanks again

Hey man, great video. Understand you are rushing thru for the sake of time of the video. Don't some of those bolts need to be tighten via torque wrench? Also some of those bolts are stress bolts and one time use only. I changed my cross support beam that you removed at minute 4:45 in video with an aftermarket Alu Kreuz one piece and had put in all new bolts and tighten with a torque wrench. Anyway, today after driving thru a flooded street I got "Dynamic Steering System Fault" with a yellow steering icon on dash. Message on dash said it was OK to continue driving which I did home for 30 miles local and highway. I saw on some forums that people just changed the steering control module and it worked. I saw from your comments that, this may or may not work. How hard is it to change that module on the rack?

Hi I have been watching a lot of you're videos I have a 2016 audi A4 car was driven on flooded streets, steering rack control unit got few drop of water in it. Got it out dropped to ECU repair experts after checking the unit out it seems perfect no burns no nothing. Still error code on my car and steering is crazy hard impossible to even park the car off the streets

That was awesome to watch. I am not a mechanic by any means and to watch you work makes me feel like I could follow your video and do the job of an expert. One question. Can I use the same format on a Audi A7? My fault steering light has come on. I took it to the dealer and received a print out that I need steering rack and inner/outer tire rods replaced for a whopping $4600. I could most likely purchase the parts for $3300 from dealer saving me around $1300 to do it myself. Any suggestions?

If you still didn't pay $4600 to a stealership go find a low mileage hit car from rear only from an online salvage yard. I got my used rack with 30K miles for $350 shipped. (www.getusedparts.com/) Hope you don't have dynamic steering because most used racks on the market did not have that option. Another tip: If you get the VIN from salvage website or via phone etc you can google it and maybe able to see the accident pics under google images. That's how I confirmed that my donor car was totaled from rear and not a scratch front of firewall. I am lucky to live an hour drive from Edgemotors and they installed it at a good labor charge.

Is an ODB reader/scanner required to perform this job? My car has the "Steering defective - Do not drive" message. The dealer said the rack was defective. I've ordered a used rack and want to attempt replacing it myself. Should the Steering defective message go away after relearning the steering messages or will a ODB/Vagcom tool be required to clear that?

Well you will need the scanner to clear the errors in all modules, the new rack if not defective should not have “defective rack codes in it” :)

+Anar Qasımov the internals are not sold separately, i you want i have a bad rack with good computer, but most likely it will not work due to allot of other electronics inside the rack. used rack is 500-800 . good luck

The problem with this one was that the car was crashed and the rack got damaged. You will need to do basic setting and the end stop relearn.

Brian Wollner yep. Got in a little accident passenger front. Electric steering was out and steering indicator light came on. Ran codes at the dealership it pointed to rack and pinion assembly. Replaced it at my local German shop with a used one I found on eBay. Steering is no longer stiff. If anything a bit looser. But now the car is giving me all type of codes (which is why I ended up here). Codes I got after replacement was ESC/TPMS and headlight angling malfunction. I think something was done wrong during the rack replacement when putting the new one back on and positioning the steering wheel straight. Already did an alignment and that didn’t fix the issue. My steering is off center STILL.

Hey man I have the same car as you and my car has a code come up that says steering defective do not drive car and my car does not start, the starter just clicks. I hooked up vag com and got a couple codes one was a no communication with the steering control module and the other was no communication with the steering angle sensor. Do you think that that means my steering rack is bad?

Your car should start regardless of steering being good or bad. So starting problem is something separate, figure that out first...

May be your battery is low? It would start to disable modules in the car if not enough power... that’s where the no communication codes could come from

Found my issue it was the sensor on the battery that goes bad after an accident. Car wasn't in an accident but that sensor failed for some reason

recently had my audi a3 rack changed but since new rack the steering seems heavy and the steering does not self centre. its way more heavy than before and if i fully lock steering the steering will just keep going that way. does it need calibrating do you think? any ideas would be great

hey boss, i replaced my rack and despite the steering wheel being straight the rack itself was not as it was used. anyway i can find out when the rack is straight using vagcom remove the steering wheel and than go back and straighten the steering wheel and than reconnect the shaft? at the moment i am unable to find a way to check dead center for the rack.

Did you replace the subframe. Huge crack in drivers side that’s the protection for rack n pinion Makes no sense. Very dangerous. If you replace it then why not explain damage and reason

Thanks for the effort in making video, but I can help but mention that the way it’s performed is unprofessional for these cars. Using power tools for tightening those subframe brace bolts is a baaad mistake, especially those front triple squares which go into aluminum. There’s no even appearance of a torque wrench and specs for any bolts. Needless to say that those are stretch bolts and need to be replaced every time you take subframe brace off. Pushing the bolts through the rack to put it into place is a bad idea too as you damade the threads and scratch off zink layer making them rust later and being a torture for the future mecharnic to take out. You’ve got the job done but rather poorly. I leave it here for the other people to be aware that this is not the way to do it right and may lead to potential damage. And btw you cannot turn steering shaft since it’s locked by the lock on the column, so there’s no need to worry about the angle sensor’s ribbon cable.

+Anar Qasımov see like i told you, there are allot of other electronic parts in there.... so could of gotten damaged. but you have to make sure you relearn it. allot of times it would say that some sensor is bad just because is is not calibrated properly.... so try to calibrate it several times and see what happens.

You did use the same subframe and it’s a huge crack. Explain why you used the broken subframe on the reinstall Doing the same had undercarriage and same side cracked. Replacing it. That is not o e m. Safe. Why not tell your client and make home replace used part 200
