Magic! This collection of songs by Andrea and the Simfonica Des Valles is so unique and fun to listen to. In a few years Andreas voice has changed but this collection captures a brief moment of youthful sweetness and beauty.

When I first heard Andrea, I was convinced after a minute or so that she had a very good intonation and a voice color that I like very much. It is a dream to have a band with such a talented singer and good musicians. And a pleasure to listen to. Merry Christmas, Joan and Andrea.

Thank you! It is astonishing with which self-confidence the "girl" stood on stage in 2013, with the certainty that in the background the gathered competence of tens of professional musicians of older generations looked and listened to her. All attention. Thanks for the musical Christmas greetings. Best wishes from me for a healthy Christmas and a New Year 2021 with as many live performances and videos as possible from the most talented and motivated young musicians in Europe.

This was so beautiful. The first time I ever heard it (I think) was when Linda Ronstadt sang it with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. But hearing Andrea sing it, with the symphony orchestra backing her, and Joan's sax, was truly sublime. You guys are so good...it DOESN'T get any better than this. Sorry, it just doesn't!

Andrea is good (or great) at any age, but there was something about that period when she was 16-18 years of age that I find really appealing. It's sort of like she still had some little girl innocence, but with the musical chops and maturity of someone twice her age. Joan, thanks for the nice Christmas present! And speaking of which, I have one below -- I did a rough translation of a story covering the band's 15th anniversary concert at the Palau de Musica recently. I don't really speak Catalan, so this is not that great, but I think it gets the idea across. Enjoy! (From Nuvol, a catalan online cultural magazine. Note: Joan Monné’s name was surprisingly misspelled in the original, and I left it as they had it) The Sant Andreu Jazz Band guarantees its future With a brilliant concert at the Palau de la Música, the young Barcelona band begins a series of events and musical activities to celebrate its fifteenth anniversary. By Michael Queralt Cultural observer 12/23/2020 The evening was titled 'From Gospel to Swing', but in reality it was a stroll through classic jazz and bossa nova, with emphasis on the repertoire of Chico Buarque and Tom Jobim. Mostly orthodox jazz, where standards coexist with the background of repertoire, without taking too many risks. The academy is ahead of the fusions present in new jazz, hip hop, contemporary and electronic music. This does not mean that there is not a remarkable work of rereading classics, where the intelligence, spontaneity, inspiration and technique of young musicians begins to work in building a musical repertoire of their own, which we hope to get to know at some point not too far in the future. The evening had numerous triumphs, and the performance shows the progress that has occurred since 2006, the year the orchestra was founded. It’s a constant work in progress. The musical education is based on pedagogy and the interpretation of a wide range of music, not only in the classroom but in constant auditions in all kinds of formats, from quintet to big band. It features the quality arrangements of the pianist Joan Munné, always at the service of the songs, and the orchestral sound or small group format, while dressing in imaginative tones the different voices. Munné is the safety net of this unique musical concept, in which musicians find the ideal place to express themselves. The Sant Andreu Jazz Band (SAJB) molds its resources, gives inventiveness and power, and graduates concision. From the music stands comes a set of fine harmonies and melodies known as notability. The night was a similar night to the one last February, in the same hall, when SAJB was the opening act for The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, conducted by Wynton Marsalis. After that, no one questioned that jazz culture was not safe. Of the guest artists, little else can be said other than colorful and strong praise. They were: Andrea Motis, trumpet and vocals; Ignasi Terraza, piano; Josep Traver, guitar and Esteve Pi, drums. As stated by the band leader and multi-instrumentalist Joan Chamorro during the concert, the session constituted a final performance from some of the young musicians who will be leaving the band due to having turned twenty or twenty-one years old. But it is also a joy to observe the multitude of very young musicians in the group. If they persist in their musical desire, the little ones ensure the transition and guarantee the future of the pedagogical project that is the SAJB, headed by Chamorro himself. Another type of record will come from all the different cameras that filmed what was happening on stage, with the aim of turning it into a video and album. One of the moments to remember from the evening was the performance of “Don't Explain”, with the voices of Andrea Motis, a current force in jazz, and Alba Armengou, representing the future. Both vocalists and trumpeters left more than one member of the audience pinned to their seats. In an earlier concert, in the same venue, the two singers made clear their appreciation for Brazilian music. Motis showed a more elaborate vocal range than that of two summers ago at the Grec theatre. You could say she's in the process of finding her voice, her own sound. Kudos for all her hard work since she formed her own quintet. Minutes earlier, Motis had delivered in a 1934 classic, “(In My) Solitude”, by Duke Ellington and lyrics by Eddie DeLange and Irving Mills. Armengou's talents were confirmed in the SAJB's visit to the modern style of jazz. She opened the session, together with Èlia Bastida, tenor sax and violin, and Alba Esteban, baritone sax and clarinet. The played “Show Me the Way”, “Sem Fantasia”, “De Conversa Me Conversa”, “An Ocasional Man”, and “Joao e Maria”, performances collected in different albums and videos under the heading of “The Magic of the Voice”. As vocalists they showed that the bossa nova, in compositions by Joao Gilberto and Stan Getz, is a living style that six decades later still has something to say, as well as the work of the more poetic Chico Buarque, the composer of “Apesar de você”, “Construção”, “O que será (à flor de pele)” and “Cálice”, among others. It would be unfair not to comment on Elsa Armengou, also a trumpeter, who played a lesser role, but no less solid, favoring bright tones, characteristic of the young orchestra. We should also mention Carla Motis, on the electric guitar, who recalled the sounds of classic and seductive jazz greats like Jim Hall, Kenny Burrell and Joe Pass, without falling into imitations. Given the impossibility of singling out all the great performances in a program of nineteen songs, and with so many musicians entering and leaving the stage, it is still worth remarking on the excellent “Indian Summer” rendition by Joan Martí, high sax, tenor, flute and voice, and the soul and gospel vocal styles of Joana Casanova singing “Don't Play That Song!”, made famous by Ben E. King and Aretha Franklin. The music sector has been saying for months that culture is safe and healthy. Following the relevant guidelines, the Palau de la Música limited its audience to 50% of capacity; that is, about a thousand seats. So this time around, the audience responded somewhat differently. But despite not having a physically full hall, the onstage response was impeccable. The enthusiasm, creativity and energy displayed show that the Sant Andreu Jazz Band learns and works hard.

Thanks for the video! The complete package, with unique orchestration. It must have been quite a challenge to record this. It seems that ( on my simple headphones ), the audio equalization had more upper register emphasis perhaps to do justice to the strings. So the bass seems understated. Perhaps it would be a small risk to have some more bass response, because the ears of enthusiasts would compensate for the highs. It's not easy to pick up bass notes.
