2013 Ford Explorer Ignition Switch Replacement

I am not a licensed mechanic, nor have I had any formal training. This repair was all guess work and exploration, hence the video.
In the end, this repair alone did not fix the issue. I took the vehicle to a good mechanic and they replaced the wiring and housing in addition to the ignition switch itself. As of April 2020, there has not been one issue since the repair was made.

2015 explorer XLT has fast clicking noise and battery is fully charged. The ignition sometimes doesn't recognize that I removed the key and have to reinsert and try again. Could this be my ignition switch?

Why did you replace it in e first place? My truck will shorten all lights ass soon as I crank it. Then I unplug all the electrical and plot them back and light come back on again then try to start it again and lights will go crazy again

Dan, Do you know the part number to the whole housing unit that the mechanic put on? Or a link to what you’re talking about. My wife’s 13 XLT is Having the exact same issue and I replaced the switch and still having problems. Thank you

Hi Jake, I tried to look back on paperwork and haven’t had luck yet, I’ll double check my wife’s vehicle. I want to say it included the lock cylinder but I recall there was some wiring in the housing unit, so not sure if it’s both. Again, I’ll check and get back with you. Worth knowing because she still has the vehicle and it’s still not had that problem since the repair.

Hi Dan! I have this same exact vehicle. Even the same color. Having the same exact problem. My husband is going to replace this same part on my explorer this evening. Did this help resolve the issue with your wife’s Explorer?

Angela Wood Hi Angela, it’s been a little over a week and unfortunately the issue occurred three days ago while the vehicle was parked on the beach for a few hours. However replacing the switch made for a much better feel when turning over the vehicle (when it does start). My next attempt will likely be replacing the ignition lock cylinder or a control module but haven’t looked into it yet. I will update if I find anything out. Quite interesting that multiple people are having this issue.

Angela Wood Angela, wanted to update you. I ended up taking the vehicle into a mechanic that was finally confident about diagnosing the problem. They replaced the entire lock cylinder housing unit, which includes the ignition switch and the spring and rod that attach to the switch. It’s something you could do yourself I think if you wanted to save some money. So far in the last couple of days the vehicle has had NO problem starting, and it is HOT out so I’m encouraged.

SuperDan1006 has the problem been resolved with the entire ignition cylinder and switch being replaced? My wife has same vehicle same problem. When it does the no crank when hot I was able to still start it with the key key held in the starting position for approximately 15-30 seconds then it starts. Almost like it has a bad relay the power is being delayed. Still in research mode. Thank you Kevin

Kevin Reed It did fix the issue. My wife hasn’t had one problem since the repair was made; it starts on the first crank every time. I’m not sure if you have the same issue or not, but I always go for the cheapest repair first. I did see some forums mention replacing the start relays, but I never got there so I can’t really speak to it. Good luck!!

SuperDan1006 I have not replaced it yet. Yes it is a 2013 XLT. Same parked when hot , intermittently no crank. I guess there’s hundreds doing the same thing. Thank you for the information .

steve ludeckery I took the vehicle to Autozone to have them check for any codes, however that exercise was moot since I could only get the vehicle there if it started. A repair shop replaced the housing in addition to the switch about a year ago and we haven’t had one problem since.

@@SuperDan1006 A bad ignition switch should set or give a code for it, however you would need a scanner that can read body codes, etc, not usually available at the parts stores.
