2013 Vancon J2 Panel 2/3

My recording of J2 panel is not as good as the breakfast -- less steady, and worse sound.
I chose a slightly lower quality format when I converted it because it takes much shorter time, considering my computer kept breaking down when converting (my poor baby).
I do feel sorry (a little) for the watermark, but there's a reason for it. I have tried my best to keep it away from their faces.

I am pretty sure no one is saying the side characters are unimportant, they are all fantastic in their ways, but the fact of the matter is that if there is no Sam and there is no Dean there is no Supernatural. It's not the same show without the brothers and their dynamic. Everyone just calm down.

I'm so thrilled that Jensen pulled Singer up on stage- he has been there from the beginning, and he knows what the show is about. I'm glad that the conclusion reached about a musical episode was that it would not feel like "Supernatural," more proof that Singer watches over the show and wants it to be the best it can be, by concentrating on it's core principles.

I agree with this! I believe the heart of the show surrounds the two brothers and their relationship. Of course the show has had other important and great characters over the years, but the show would truly not exist without sam and dean and I think people forget that sometimes.

It's not that the other characters don't matter but the show IS Sam-n-Dean. I adored Bobby but the show went on without him. I love Cas but it does just fine when he's not there. But the show CAN'T function without either of the brothers so I can see their point.

I know you won't agree with this but from season 1-4 it was only Sam and Dean and they did well,and when Castiel and ruby and other characters joined in and they did really well. But the fact stands that even if there are fans who actually watch the show for Castiel the show can't go on without even one brother missing , so Sam and Dean are the most important while Cas ans other characters are also very important.

And loving Cas and seeing him as important doesn't take away at all from the importance of Sam and Dean on the show. Enjoying other characters doesn't take away from Sam and Dean either, but there are some fans (and I'm not saying that this person is the vid is one) that would be quite happy if Cas & supporting characters didn't exist on the show at all. Which is sad to me cause S1-3 were great, but I think S4-8 have been awesome as well. S4 & S5 have been my favorite seasons of all.

I'm also glad that Singer recognizes that the Leviathans were the thin part of S7, because that season had some fantastic episodes, just not any with the Levis in them. LOL

And then she goes on to say that regardless of anything else, demons, angels etc-- it all comes down to the brothers. She's not wrong. Castiel is a huge part of the show, of course- I love the character as much as any Cas fan-- but in the end, from start to finish, the show is about Sam and Dean. It started with them, it's gonna end with them. While all characters have importance, this is still the 'Winchester show'.

Important thing about the show, but it is certainly the most important, Sam and Dean are the most important characters in the show. That's just my opinion, and maybe I'm being bias because I am a HUGE fan of the brothers relationship, but I just wanted to put my thoughts out there.

I am one of the biggest fans of Castiel around. I adore Cas and Misha so, so much. But even I don't want a show with "just" Castiel. I agree that the winning combination for me is Cas AND Dean AND Sam. The show works best with all three of them. I don't understand why anyone would want any one of those three amazing characters/amazing actors off the show.

I don't understand why people are getting so hurt about the just brothers comment because the story is about the brothers and it always has been! The other characters are extremely important to the show but the story follows Sam and Dean. If you all remember right most of the first 2 seasons were the brothers going to this places fighting these monsters. No Angles and hardly any demons. Every character is important but if the show didn't have Sam and Dean it would have all ready been cancelled!!

Season 7 was a quality season. But I guess nowadays, quality doesn't matter if your favorite character isn't in the episode. The show was just fine without Castiel and season 7 reminded a lot of people of that, though was a great addition to the show. Supernatural is about the brothers and if you are only in it for Cas you can't be a true fan. This show is about family at it's core and if you just watch the episodes to see Cas, you're missing a lot of brilliance in the show.

Regarding the shirtless cowboy hat response from Jared. I don't think Jared realized just how uncomfortable Jensen was with the fact that Jared brought it up. Not until a little later in the panel, when Jensen talked about telling his 18 year old self that it's okay to say no to taking his shirt off, did Jared seem uncomfortable. It's like he (Jared) finally realized that it might be a sore spot for Jensen.

I watch the show mainly because I love Cas, but I also love Dean and Sam too. I know ppl that enjoyed the first 3 seasons, but didn't fall in love with show until Cas showed up. And that's okay! People can and are allowed to watch and be fans for whatever reason they want to. Plus Cas is a big part of the show and has been a regular on 3 seasons now. Love him or hate him, he is important to the show. But that doesn't take away from Sam & Dean's importance either. Just gives us more to love.

Interesting how in that same panel Singer actually criticized season 7, which took Castiel away for most of the season. Being the longest running producer of the show, I doubt they could have promoted Misha back to a series regular status and given a much larger role to Castiel in season 9 without Singer's approval. I think Singer is well aware of what a draw and valuable asset Castiel is to the show, and he was just trying to be diplomatic here.

The brothers are the heart of the show, but they need supporting characters around them. I liked Cas in seasons 4,5 & 6 but the last two seasons not so much. I am tired of the writers making him look stupid or using him for comic relief. I am worried for season 9 because I don't want to see him riding around in the Impala with the brothers all the time.

It's true that the show worked before without the side characters. But that was largely because the brothers themselves were new characters whose story was mostly unexplored. Problem now is that after the first 5 seasons everything that could've been done with the Sam 'n Dean story has been pretty much done. We need other characters whose stories are untold to breathe fresh life into the show so that we could watch Sam and Dean react to those new situations and engage us once again.

I believe that people are upset because it is a fact that there is a group of fans online that have actually campaigned to try & get Cas/Misha off the show. There is a group of fans that actively have tweeted the PTB with remarks trying to downplay Cas' importance & saying that ppl don't like Cas. Things that have happened online + Cas' absence in Season 7 makes a lot of Cas fans very sensitive. After Dean went to Purgatory I was looking forward to a season full of badass Sam on a rampage ala Mystery Spot, not yet another version of sick Sam. I'm a Sam fan, and even I noticed he does have a 'damsel-in-distress' routine that require constant TLC! Psychic headaches in S1-S3, blood addiction in S4, soullessness in S6, Lucifer hallucinations in S7, trials in S8. If he were female, the implications would be unfortunate. The show didn't do "just fine" without Bobby and Castiel as evident by the disaster season 7 became. If it was doing great they wouldn't have brought back those two towards the end of the season. But they did, and they added Charlie and Meg because they realized the show sucks with only Sam and Dean. Also, like it or not, there is a group of fans who actually watch the show for Castiel and not the brothers. They aren't just a few either.
