I’m glad it’s not just my husband that can’t be alone in a grocery store 😂 I’ve had almost the same conversation with my husband. Once he came home with several different types of cheese. Sliced, cubed, block, shredded. I asked him why he bought so much cheese and he said “for my lunches”. I’m dead.

I love that you reread 'Eleanor & Park' and the way you spoke about your thoughts about it then vs. now, it really speaks to how I feel about the book. When I first read it, in my early twenties like you, I remember being so happy Eleanor was a character that I could truly see myself in and she was more than the sidekick with some sort of weight loss storyline too! And that excitement over that did blind me to seeing the poor representation of Park and his Koren identity, as well as the way his mom was written as well. When the comments and call outs started coming out, as they should have, I was kinda thrown at first because I didn't remember thinking it was as bad or wrong as it was. But I knew that it wasn't my place to say people were overreacting and so I did my best to listen to them and learn about the bias I and the things I was previously ignorant to. It sucked to have to rethink a book that I had such a connection and good time with, but I knew it was more important to listen to the problems people had with it so that I could be more aware should I encounter issues like that in other books in the future. I'm glad you read it and got to reflect on your experience then vs now and I am happy you shared it with us.

As someone who doesn't care about an author's nationality/color/etc, and very much believes that you should read books that sound interesting - you need to follow people who DO read from authors of color, or you're never going to diversify your authors. THAT is what people need to focus on if they do believe like I do. And they're either going to be successful, ,or not. Also, Rob's costco thing was hilarious lol.

I think when people say that they don’t take into account an author’s background or race when choosing books, they’re not realizing that publishing and social media are both very biased towards white authors. That’s why it’s so important for readers to go out of their way to broaden their own horizons and choose to read diversely. It’s something that I’m working on, too!!

I totally agree with your mini-rant about people's resistant to reading books by non-white authors. I see this come up all the time on Reddit. Like, I totally understand if someone only wants to read romance, or only sci fi, or only popcorn fiction. But there are now (thankfully) books being published by people of diverse races, nationalities, and perspectives in all those genres! How many thrillers about middle class, white women with seemingly perfect lives who have a Dark Secret do we really need? Do people not get bored of reading these without even a slight variation to this theme?
@CleaSelene3 күн бұрын
May I try to answer this from my perspective? Personally, I read for escapism and process real-life social issues through other means. As a result, I'm doing my best to dodge books that focus heavily/predominantly on politics (incl. identity politics) and social issues, especially when they do it heavy-handedly and/or tell-y and/or super explicitly as a main theme. Now, I'm not saying all non-white authors that get published only write these types of stories, thank the gods things have gotten much better in that regard over the last few decades. However. Very often, reviewers (on booktube, trad media, doesn't matter) still pitch books like this: - straight white author: This is a story about character A and character B, and they encounter this cool thing! - POC/queer author: This is a story about POC character A who whilst dealing with social issues encounters queer character B, and then this cool thing happens! Now, does the first pitch mean that character A isn't experiencing social issues or that character B's sexual/romantic life won't come up in the story? Of course not. But because these things are not included in the pitch, what captures my attention is the "cool thing", so I'll check the book out, and the inclusion of the other bits might ultimately not bother me cause they're just side elements. In the 2nd case, however, the "issues" - by being included in the pitch - sound to me like they might take centre-stage with the cool thing being just a backdrop/carrier for political discussion, and as I've been burnt too often by publishing choices in that direction over the last 20-30 years, I will often choose to play it safe and skip that book. In short, I think there's such a thing as reviewers over-emphasising the representational elements in certain books to a degree that unintentionally misrepresents where the focus of the actual books lies. And that's how these books lose readers like me and my reading ends up whiter than I'd like it to be. One concrete example to wrap up with, many decades old, but it still applies: Octavia E. Butler wrote a wonderful short story called "Bloodchild". Critics at the time and pitches till today call(ed) it "a story about slavery", while Butler herself is on record saying that she doesn't get how on earth people keeo coming to that interpretation, for her it was a story about love and many other things but not slavery. So, if I had been pitched "Bloodchild" as "a sci-fi story about slavery with a POC protagonist", I wouldn't have touched it. However, if you pitch it to me as "a coming-of-age story in which a human teenager on an alien planet forms a complicated bond with a giant centipede" - now you have my attention.

@aquaticraccoon14676 күн бұрын
personally I reread it a couple years ago (after originally reading it when it first came out and LOVING it) and I thought it totally held up! the nostalgia was there and I think the themes of forging your own path instead of just going through the motions of what's been predetermined for you is still extremely resonant as an adult. I also ended up reading the rest of the trilogy and liked it but not as much as the original, so maybe your mileage will vary with those but I don't think a reread would taint any fond memories!
