Kohler courage motors often have trouble with leaking oil from valve cover and head bolts loosening up and some have loose bolts on the upper crankcase cover. I ran one of the courage motors for years cutting a hell of a lot of grass until the exhaust pipe burned through and I welded it. I had to retighten the head bolts a few times. Other than that it still runs fine, and burns no oil. I just bought a fairly new Troy built with the courage motor. The head bolts had loosened so much that oil was pouring out of the head and the valve cover also leaked oil. It had caught on fire when all this oil contacted the hot exhaust. It burned up the shroud cover and part of the carb filter cover and melted the spark plug/coil wire. I took the head off and cleaned the small amount of carbon around the valves. The gasket was still good. So I spray painted the gasket with a thick layer of aluminum paint which is suppose to help seal it and cleaned and re-torqued the head bolts using Blue Lock Tight. The cork valve cover gasket was broke into at one spot. I used silicone sealant on both sides and put the gasket back on not over tightening that will distort gasket and using blue lock tight on bolts to prevent them from loosening from vibration. The Kohler is usually very dependable if you check it for leaks and fix them as soon as you see them. Having the option the Kawasaki would likely not have the problems of Kohler but any motor can leak over time due to vibration and especially if the bolts were not properly torqued at the factory. Fix leaks or risk fire.

Really appreciate you sharing. I'm fixing to purchase this exact same model. Wonder if you could give some feedback over the last year that you've had it and how it's faired? Especially the Kawasaki engine? Thanks again for the review.
