I finally pulled the headstock apart and clear coated it in a shiny clear automotive lacquer. I like the Dupli-color stuff, as I've never had any problems with it doing anything funny. It dries fast, sands well, buffs up super shiny, and seems durable. I am NOT affiliated with them in any way. It's just what's available to me locally and what has worked well for my DIY stuff. You'll need to run your own experiments before messing up your own guitar or be willing to have to work out how to fix mistakes along the way:-)

A few things I would have done differently, but your results appear to be excellent. One thing I would constructively suggest, is that you should lay the guitar flat, when finishing the head stock or the face of the guitar. This will result in a better finish, with less orange peel. You can also apply thicker coats without worrying about runs. With the thicker coats, you can then wet sand, for a perfect, finish, undiscernable from a factory one. I also like to leave a slight edge, when taping off the headstock, to let the clear flow over the edge, just slightly. Then you can sand any ridge that may result, again, for a perfect finish.

Looks great. You've really developed a knack for diy refinishing. Thanks for sharing the cool vids.

Nice touch with the minwax, and the headstock looks great with the clear coat. Good video

Love that Duplicolor clear coat. It’s been my go to for years now. And I’m deathly afraid of sanding off a decal so I went with a frisket instead.

You might have been able to buff it to a shine. I've buffed semigloss to a nice gloss before, either way nice job, looks good.

Love your videos brother, I was wondering if you could give me your opinion. Do you think the SGJ plays better than a standard? Thanks, Dave.

It looks really good. Was your goal to clear coat with lacquer to give more of a gloss finish as opposed to satin?

There's so much stuff you do with guitars that I want to do but don't think I have the balls to do it.

Scope out something cheap at a yard sale, on CL or pawn shop, or even buy one of those sub-$100 guitar kits. This way you can risk screwing something up without having to worry about it too much.

Do you think Gibson has dropped the ball on quality and raised their prices? Some people think the best you can get are the ones built before the 1980s. You do a great job for what you have to work with. Thankz

maybe it would be a good idea to stick the body in a trashbag, since its faster and you can reuse it

Tito López I wondered that, the wings on the back of the headstock make it appear it was an epiphany, converted into a Gibson
@sidney9699
@sidney9699 7 жыл бұрын
yes! However I found out resently that some or all gibson headstock are built that way...they "add the wings" on the sides. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong

I'm certain using scraps to make the headstock was cheaper and is pretty much considered ok as these guitars were like 700 new. I have a guitar like this one but the back is painted in black satin. They do the same thing with bodies. 1 big piece costs more than 2 or 3 smaller pieces.
