Mercedes technician here. Not sure if it used to be 9nm or not, and was updated, but the torque spec per WIS is 5nm. They are incredibly delicate. Great vid!

Very helpful video. For everyone watching I ended up breaking a bolt trying to torque to 9nm though. I think the silicone gets on the bolt and the lubrication throws off torque wrench. Luckily easy to get out but scary. Be very careful. I see why they are one time use.
@pfsantos0078 ай бұрын
5 Nm as per M-B WIS. 9 Nm is for the Secondary Tensioner to Cylinder Head Bolts.
@Justsomeguy10155 ай бұрын
Yes they are also strech bolts so once they've been stretched, you shouldn't try to stretch them more which can lead to them breaking essentially.

Thank you for the video. Regarding touque. The required torque is 4nm stage 1, and 60 deg stage 2. Regarding the use of a razor blade for cleaning, this is not recommended. Use only quality liquid gasket removers. For passenger side on a W166, remove three upper bulkheads to remove the intake manifold. I posted a video for the bulkheads because there are NO instructions out there.

@@EuropeanAutoRepair A little update. The front cover to head is 5nm in one stage. The torque above is for the cam adj mag to cover.

A couple great tools to have on these cars. You'll thank me later. Hose grip pliers for hoses and spark plug boots (once the plastic pull breaks) and Clic-R Type Clamp Pliers for the Intake hoses (not touched in this video but very useful).

Why do you have to buy new bolts and can’t reuse the old ones. I need to do this what are the size bolts?
@EuropeanAutoRepair Жыл бұрын
They are aluminum bolts, not a great idea to reuse those but if you do in this application you will likely be alright

I have a 2013 c300, dealership said I need my upper timing cover resealed. They didn’t say driver or passenger but they did say it would be 1600 to do it. Wish me luck and send me advice please

Hmm well probably not a bad idea to clean it all off and get a better idea of how bad it’s leaking, spray it down with some brake cleaner and recheck maybe

Are the bolts on 4:08 & 4:10 do they have to be torqued specific way like the aluminum bolts at 9nm
@EuropeanAutoRepair8 ай бұрын
I just use a scuff pad and a little brake clean to clean the surface, i personally don’t torque them but if you aren’t comfortable with that even just finding a generic torque spec based on hardware size would be fine

Replaced cam sensor on left intake , swapped variable timing solenoids , clear code go drive 30 seconds Kate intake cam timing reading goes to 36.21 Lind engine is off … engine rattles upon start up … until oil pressure kicks in … seen the TSB on updated tensioners etc … any other fix besides full timing chains tensioners etc replacement…. Engine has no evidence of lack of oil changes … thanks

I was told there is oil leak on both driver and passenger side timing covers on 2012 ML350 which I believe is the same engine as 2014 E350. Is this a normal problem in Mercedes? Recommendation is to reseal front timing covers. Can you please let me know how much is the approximate cost to reseal them? Is this something that need to be done immediately?

Seems like maybe that oil is spillage from an oil change? Just had a C250 with the filter on the top back of the engine. A shop tried to sell repairs for it. I steam cleaned the engine and the customer brought it back after 200 miles and zero leaks. Now I have a C450 coming in tomorrow from another customer where the same shop told them it needs the timing covers resealed. I watch this video and look…oil filter right there and it’s not leaking on the other side….hmmmm.
@EuropeanAutoRepair3 ай бұрын
Yeah always a good idea to clean if off and see what returns, I’ll usually put a note on the work order to check at next oil change interval
