It just goes to show that if Jeff Gordon had a competitive car he obliterated the field. Too bad that he didn't have enough of it in the last 15 years of his career. That and the chase format depriving him of 2-3 championships.

The Chase changed a lot of people's careers and Jeff Gordon and Jamie MacMurray are the two I think changed their careers dramtically. Jeff would have been a 7x champ and MacMurray would have likely haven been a top ten driver.

Or for that matter, the sixth or seventh if not for the adaptation of the Chase. However, I don't think winning the championship is that important any more because the Chase has devalued the championship so much, and now with this ridiculous format of eliminating drivers after every third race of the Chase and settling it with a four driver, one race, highest finisher takes all format has made winning the championship almost valueless today. Back when Jeff Gordon and all the great champions before him were winning titles, it was a true evaluation of how good a driver and their team is because they had to be good everywhere, on all types of tracks, but now the Chase has made road courses and even short tracks virtually irrelevant, in terms of winning the championship.

***** I like the chase, and I don't. Instead of NASCAR inventing their own "post-season" and going their own way, they bring in the chase, which is heavily adapted from other sports. What I like is winners are automatically entered in, and I like it being only a limited number of drivers. What I don't like is the elimination process. It's complete shit. You don't get do-overs in a race. We don't have 4 quarters. If you wreck the car, the game is over..there's no way to make it back up in 1 race. Once those top 16 drivers are locked in, it should fundamentally reset the points for those drivers, and the driver with the highest amount of points at the end of the final race is the champ. Simple. Effective. And it still gives it that post-season vibe.
@KFieLdGaming
@KFieLdGaming 9 жыл бұрын
Fifty0ne I do think the amount of spots in the chase for winners should be reduced by a couple spots though. It may make things more interesting, and allows for consistency to play a larger role, as it should.

Riiight, tell that to the other 42 drivers racing for cash money... And it's not as if over the past 3+ years Gordon has had some of the worst luck, both uncontrollable, and questionable cautions. You can only control so much in racing friend. Dominant cars are dominant cars.

Jeff Gordon currently is third on the win list with 93. All 93 wins are Sunday races of course. Back in Richard Petty (200) and David Pearson's (105) time the wins that they got on Friday and Saturday counted towards the total. I've looked up "Sunday wins list" as if Nationwide and the trucks were running in their time. Jeff moves to second on the list I can't remember exactly how many wins behind. I think it's around 20-30 or so. But what Kyle Busch is doing is exactly like what the King did in his day. At this point I'm wondering if Kyle will get to 250.

Me too! NASCAR should have penalized Jeff for not slowing down under that last caution. They allowed him to do whatever he wanted to do, yet in 2012, they penalized Kasey Kahne at Kansas for shutting the car off, and then he could not get it restarted, and fell back a car length or so. Then they penalized Kasey for the same thing in 2015 and 2016 at New Hampshire. The penalty cost him the race all three times.

I love all racing but IndyCars are the best and the Indy 500 is the greatest race in the world. I love the Brickyard 400 but they look so slow lol.
@cjs83172
@cjs83172 9 жыл бұрын
Compared to IndyCars, they ARE slow. For instance, when NASCAR first raced at Indy in 1994, the qualifying speeds were what were run in 1970 and '71. In fact, the pole speed for each of the first two runnings of the Brickyard 400 (172+ MPH) would not have even been in the first three rows in the 1971 Indianapolis 500. In fact, the pole speed for each of the first three Brickyard 400s was slower than what George Amick ran in a roadster at Daytona to sit on the pole for the only IndyCar race ever run there in 1959, just two months after the first Daytona 500, and nearly 35 MPH faster than the fastest single-car qualifying run for the inaugural Daytona 500.

+cjs83172 We have seen even the best of Indycar can't do shit in Nascar and they compete in Quality Equipment(Montoya(Ganassi) and Hornish(Penske)) while a Nascar driver can get into a Indycar do fine for a first timer (Kurt Busch).
@cjs83172
@cjs83172 8 жыл бұрын
And yet, back in the 60s and 70s, the exact opposite was true. Some of NASCAR's best tried to run at Indy, and with rare exception, they all failed. For instance, Cale Yarborough ran the Indianapolis 500 four times (1966-'67, '71-72) and even ran the entire IndyCar circuit in 1971 and '72, and he was a flop, as was LeeRoy Yarbrough in his Indy appearances, including being involved in two separate incidents in the 1967 Indy race. And when Bobby Allison ran for Roger Penske in 1973 and '75, it was still building up to what it would become beginning in the late 70s, and Bobby really wasn't as competitive as many thought he'd be, though he did run in the top 10 in the '75 race before dropping out. Of the NASCAR drivers who ran at Indy in the 60s and 70s, only Donnie Allison was competitive, finishing fourth in 1970, winning Indy's Rookie of the Year during a time when he was shuttling between Indy and Charlotte, where he dominated the World 600. Then in 1971, he nearly duplicated BOTH accomplishments, finishing sixth at Indy and second to his brother Bobby in the World 600. The difference was that Donnie was the only one of those four drivers that was on a top-tier team, as A.J. Foyt's team was one of the very best in the sport back then, while the teams the others drove for were not elite teams. The examples you mention are no different. While Hornish, Montoya, and the other open wheel drivers who ventured into NASCAR were not that great, neither were the teams they raced for. Penske was not the powerhouse they are now and Ganassi has never really been a truly formidable team, except for 2009-'10, and Montoya did make the Chase in 2009 for Ganassi, while Jamie McMurray won both the Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400 for Ganassi in 2010. We must also remember that A.J. Allmendinger was also a flop when he drove for Penske even before the drug suspension, and he's actually turned out to be pretty good, especially considering the team he currently drives for. But when Kurt Busch drove at Indy, he did drive for an elite team (Andretti Autosport, which won the race year Busch drove for them with Ryan Hunter-Reay), and if he had more experience in those cars, he might have contended for the win, because he drove a conservative race, opting to stay out of trouble until the last 20-30 laps, instead of charging, which is usually his style, and his decision paid off handsomely.
