Everybody seems to like the KTM Super Duke the best but forget to factor in it's weak dealer and part support in the US. From what I've heard on the forums KTM's reliability isn't the best overall. Aprilia's US dealer support and part availability isn't much better than KTM. I'd love to test ride the BMW s1000r, much cheaper, better looking than the KTM and dealership support is better, a little better reliability (going by the S1000rr) my pick would probably be the BMW if I liked the test ride. Honda needs to do something with the CB1000r already!

bstavrev If the KTM or Aprilia needs fixing/parts that means no riding for a long time, if you have just one bike. Some guys on the Aprilia forum say you can grow a beard before the part is even shipped if the part is in stock. lol Also, the parts can be 3x more expensive than what you are used to paying for readily available japanese parts.

I went for the ktm, but hard decision against bmw s1000r... (I spent 4 months convinced about the bmw). I can't be happier for finally deciding to buy the ktm, even the simplest/easiest ride makes me put a stupid smile on my face. Ergonomics is incredible I'm 6'1". Could drive for ages even at high speeds (wind doesn't hit you so hard and I can't realize why). Quality feel of every single component (shifting, braking, a bolt, cable, mechanism,...) is outstanding. Stability is incredible even with soft damping at high pace. (and I was kind of sceptic because of the long shock absorber travel, 156mm) Engine is... a beast. Never tried something similar, so fantastic. (and I was on the racetrack just a month ago with a BMWS1000RR with HP parts, power boost about 200hp on the wheel, etc...) It's expensive though... but you won't regret a single euro.

+aaron collier as you get taller, the decision becomes easier from the ergonomics point of view, falling on the KTM's side. You will feel much more comfortable in the KTM than in any other bike.

After trying both the 1290 duke with full powerparts and akrapovic exhaust I was sold. .. easy to ride, comfy and exciting. However I am 5.5 and this bike is tall. Tried the kausalitet z 1000. fits me better. It all comes down to preferanse . Look forward to try the BMW

Absolutely love the whole testing series you did. Taking it everywhere and putting them in all the same situations! Thank you for a great review. I was rooting for the S1000R the whole way. I have been checking out the other bikes and I am a short rider. Even though the bimmer didn't take the win with you guys, I still prefer it. I couldn't do this comparo because of my bias to inline fours. Although I own a v-twin now and love it, I have a yearning for the scream of the BMW!

I'm with CycleCruza on the dealer network issue. Plus I read on the forums of possible reliability issues on the Tuono. It's possible the weak dealer network is at fault. I'm about to retire my Duc 900SP and these three are my likely candidates. If I lived in Austin I might feel differently but a Beemer is in my future.

The previous gen was comfy though. Have a 990SMT now, but not digging the tall goofy suspension. Fun bike though. Super Duke tomorrow...

All of these bikes I'd be happy to have. The aprilia for me has been almost the perfect bike. To get it that way all i had to do was buy the factory windscreen, add 1 inch bar risers, install the race ecu and a slip on. The one HUGE shortcoming which is almost a deal breaker and eventually will be is the fuel range. If I lived in California I would probably be happy with lots of twisty roads relatively close by but I don't and I have fuel range anxiety every time I ride. I love it so much I want to ride but I feel tethered to gas stations. Soooo close to my perfect bike. That sound, the uniqueness and comfort/sport combination. Luckily you can add wind protection to the aprilia and bmw from the looks of it but don't see it on the ktm. Believe me if you don't live in California you will want it. Oh, tall seat height kind of sucks for my short ass too but seems all bikes are tall now (except street triple which fits me like a glove).

While the streetfighter name came from ducati, all I can gather from reading and watching videos is that these are supposedly called nakeds. BMW insists there bike is a standard. With these three I think it's the details that separate them. Lets face it 160 mph or a little higher, great handling and a more comfortable riding position make these 3 a bit of a toss up. I don't know about you but I probably won't get to test the absolute limits with 99.9% of my regular riding. Pick the one that fits you.

@thebigwarthog

If you've ever ridden a naked bike on the highway the wind will push your legs apart so a lot of naked bikes will have mini fairings to stop that from happening.

It's like splitting hairs so opinions are subjective and it's good to know that their all that good what it will come down to is brand preference and I will go with BMW their motorrad community is arguably the best and they back their bikes plus they hold their value. S1000R's have a 6 month waiting list in Toronto, Canada. The other two are just not as exclusive. I do like the KTM but i'm a shorter rider and KTM is on the bottom end of the reliability scale. Comming from an HP4 I wouldn't want to live without the DDC and the BMW quick shifter is a God send. I think the Tuono looks dated. I think the Ducati 1200 S should of made it to the finale over the Tuono.
@gggromay
@gggromay 9 жыл бұрын
All this reviews and comparisons are useless to people who are going to buy this bikes without considering reliability. No matter how good is a bike, if once you own it, it starts braking down, gives you headaches, becomes a money pit, then that edge that made it better at first quickly dissolves, and fun turns into nightmare, suddenly its NOT the best bike to own. So, reliability is another factor to consider when talking about which bike is better and where should you put your money.
@DarudeSandstormVEVO
@DarudeSandstormVEVO 8 жыл бұрын
+GRRB What the hell are you talking about? I'm driving a USED BMW S1000RR for 2 years now and it still looks like new and to me it is the VERY DEFINITION of reliability.
@gggromay
@gggromay 8 жыл бұрын
+Darude Sandstorm whats wrong with you? Im saying reliability is crucial when considering which motorcycle to buy and "All this reviews" fail to take that into account when comparing bikes... Where in my comment did I say the Bmw was not reliable? The fact that you took it that way signals some problem or something wrong with you
@DarudeSandstormVEVO
@DarudeSandstormVEVO 8 жыл бұрын
+GRRB Do you actually have ANY idea about the engineering quality of any of these bikes?? It's like talking about Ferrari's and someone starts bitching about the colour red... If ANY of these bikes starts braking down it's because of the crappy driver and not the bike which is pretty much why reliability is not discussed in these topics. How many BMWs do I see/hear who wanted to be tough with their blingbling Akrapovic... but they couldn't care about the ECU mapping so they're slowly raping that excellent engine. They all wanna act knee-down cool in corners complaining about the bike is not reliable... but never heard of countersteering.
@gggromay
@gggromay 8 жыл бұрын
+Darude Sandstorm Apparently you read too much and understand too little, so you just repeat things like "counter steering". First of all I never said any of this bikes was or wasn't reliable, I was clearly saying there are other things to consider when owning a motorcycle apart from the first impression. And for your info, according to Consumer Reports, BMW is one of the most unreliable motorcycle brands.

***** Don't agree sorry, How many Dakar's has KTM's unreliability gotten it? Looked at the BMW 1600GT, most buyers were left by the side of the road with shorted electrics, Recall to replace all switchgear? Go to the forums, Test drove one and it had so much drive train lash, I thought it was faulty, my 40 yo Moto Guzzi has none but BMW give you it out of the factory door for 36K? new. Many owners quote excessive oil use. I own a KTM 950 with 70, 000 kilometres on its WP suspension, just now it is having the forks seals done and the rear shock is untouched. 10,000 klm trip and the oil level didn't move. Don't think many GS owners will go that far on factory suspension, in fact many have had the rear shock totally fail at around 20K on many models. This is what you expect from a japanese bike on low cost suspension. I am sure there are some great reliability stories about BMTroubleU but I think there you also find many issues as well and some horror stories with regard cost when out of warranty. If you want bullet proof mechanicals buy a Yamaha or Honda but just be prepared to be bored. Still wouldn't let lack of dealers stop me buying the bike I want.

more like TRACKFIGHTER if all they really discuss is track capability then these are shit tier compared to their supersport counterparts. Supersport >> Streetfighter around a track anyday. For street capability, a bike does not need any of the track goodies in fact it makes the bike a lot more uncomfortable and a chore around city traffic. I ride an FZ09.

+Rachman01 I hate it when morons start telling shit without knowing. First of all... you have a LOT of different tracks. Some of them are great for supersports but really... a lot of them for amateur drivers on trackdays are designed for these kind of bikes. That 175pk Aprilia fucks a BMW S1000RR around some of these tracks.

The fork is a little longer and the handle bars are a tad higher on the naked versions, but still too far forward to be a proper street bike.

Thats because the speedo over reads by about 35kmh(go look it up). It gets nowhere near that. I test rode it a few weeks back and it's really not very quick past an actual 110mph. Fantastic bike but it's nowhere near the beast that was claimed

khamid1 The only rubbish is what you typed. MCN tested the top speed at 159mph while it was indicating 180. Loads of owners have been complaining. I turned everything off when I rode it and had another friend along with me. It's dead after 110mph compared to a 1000cc sportsbike and barely pulled away from my 990SMR (which I would consider slow in a straight line). But it's beastly to you so that's what matters - even if you are lying about a GPS 299kmh - thats pure shite!

Hi there in the states. I am from Austria - the home country of KTM. Got my 1290SD-R End of March and i can only assure, that its the best bike I ve ever ridden. In the alps (mountains) I am unbeatable, acceleration out of curves unique.Wheely up to 4th gear, On track there are some faster - okay - depends on what you prefer - Only or mostly on track than you should not take a naked bike... My next KTM-dealer is also more than 1 hour away - what do I care about that, I want the best and no compromises in riding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Orange greetings from Austria 1290SD-Ready

For me, it's the BMW, these bikes are stupid close, and the KTM, according to the test rider, seems to be their favorite. I am not knocking the KTM, it's a very capable bike indeed, like they said, I could be happy with it. The BMW is simply the best looking of the bunch for me. The Aprilia is second in that regard, and the KTM, for me, is butt ugly. I just don't like the styling of the Super Duke. If any of these bikes were a birthday present, I would be ecstatic.

By class KTM superduke r is the only pure breed of streetfighter. the other two are simply superbikes with torn down fairings with some parts replaced and walla self proclaimed streetfighter...ofcoz these bikes triumph on track days..very weak review...this 2 bikes does not deserved or shoudnt be in this category in th first place..

Retarded comment, a streetfighter is a sport bike torn apart, that's how the genre was born. People used to have to make their own streetfighters out of sport bikes.

Street triple for ever. These bikes are "useless", with all this power and no aerodynamic. The are very expensive for use in public roads with traffic and little accidents. Forget about gasoline and routine services.

The fuck? You like the street triple yet you are making all these claims against a naked bike. Just say these bikes are out of your price rage. So that is why you have the need to trash them. Every bike has their attraction to different people. By your logic no one really need anything more than a scooter to get around town. And if you want practical then a motorcycle has nothing on a car. Now if you are just poor and can't buy these shit then just deal with it or make more money. Your post is a contradiction and tells people you're just angry because these bikes are too expensive for you to buy. That is what your post sound like. These bikes are more or less toys and if you can't see that than continue on your mission to trash them.
@GeneralLack
@GeneralLack 10 жыл бұрын
MrPanda415 Your reply to my "opinion" is a little aggressive. Truth is that i prefer to have 2 bikes modified the way i like them than a so expensive without a "character". And again naked bikes are not aerodynamic that means that a bike with 100hp and a bike with 160hp perform the same at high speed. For example with my triple my 4th gives me 215km/h and my 6th 245km/h and the air makes it too difficult to stay in this speed for long. And again this is my opinion coming from my experience...

I've just traded my street and Gixxer 1000 for a Tuono V4, it blows them both away. Street is awesome but just not enough if you need that weekend adrenaline kick, Tuono is a scary beast that turns like it's on rails. It's simply the best bike I've ridden...period!

Lmenzol Street triple has great suspension, but really lacking in electronics package, especially compared to the Tuono. When I was shopping for a new bike, it came down to either the Street Triple R or Tuono V4R... I'm loving my Tuono. Not to mention the sound and smooth delivery of a V4 engine.

benjamin reynolds In which case why would you buy a naked sportbike in the first place? An hour on straight roads with no fairing is just a pain in the ass. 2 hours (presuming you're going home after) means half your day will be spent blowing about on cruise control. Whats the point? Trailer the bike if you live that far or at least buy a sport tourer so it's not so bad.
