The commentators got it right on something -- it's the combination of different strengths in Meryl and Charlie that make them compelling to watch. Meryl is delicate, graceful, doll-like, exotic. Charlie is powerful, raw, masculine, all-American. Together, they just draw the eye and tug at your heart. Congratulations on your gold, Meryl and Charlie!!!

This ice dancing performance is the first since Torville & Dean's "Bolero" to touch me in a spiritual way. Davis & White's "Scheherazade" will forever be remembered as a transcendent performance, you don't have to like ice dancing to be moved by them, that is the sign of true artistry, to arouse people's hearts even if they don't know your process. Viva Davis/White !!!! Congratulations on your well deserved gold in Sochi!!!

Couldn't agree with you more. And I remember watching Torvill and Dean in Sarajevo in 1984 and I honestly feel that the gold medal performance at the 2014 Sochi games was better than Torvill and Dean's both technically and artistically.
@cosmicurious522

David Platt I agree that technically Davis & White are better than Torville & Dean, but I find it unfair to compare two couples separated by thirty years. I feel that Davis & White are an evolution of Torville & Dean's artistry. However, both gold medal performances represent masterpieces in their respective eras.
@vabballfan
@vabballfan 10 жыл бұрын
I agree that at the time, Torville and Dean's performance in Sarajevo was a masterpiece. However, the reason why I feel that, to me, Davis and White's performance was above and beyond was due to the incredible attention to detail and extraordinary things that Meryl and Charlie did. Bringing in Derek Hough to make their performance more like real dancing was just one of those things. But to me the two most extraordinary things about Davis and White is 1) the syncronicity - I have never seen two skaters mirror one another so closely and 2) the lifts and spins - the entrance into and exit out of the lifts and spins are so far above every other couple in ice dancing history that it is mind boggling. Meryl "floats" back down onto the ice and is so smooth and seamless. Especially at the end of the long dance when she is balanced on his thigh as high as she can get and then Charlie basically completely rotates her and she just touches down on the ice smoother than a perfect three point landing of an airliner. It's also shown in the twizzles in the long dance when they are done after the 2 minute mark for the bonus but also in absolutely dead-perfect timing to the music.

+David Platt Love your comments. I love watching this performance!!! They have often said what it takes to be an Olympic Champion. I think they will retire but keep doing their SOI shows which are stunning. I'm not a fan of B & A. Actually when I watch them, I love M & C more. Loved them on DWTS too. I'm so happy Meryl won but Charlie was robbed!!! But I did love watching MnM together on the dance floor. WOW MERYL!!!

Absolutely love them and this performance. Meryl looks so elegant yet consistent,precise and athletic. Charlie is the best male ice dancer that I could ever remember. I have the feeling that the Russians like me can't wait to see his blond curly hair just a bouncing around on the ice. In Sochi, there is no question why they scored the highest in the short program. They will be performing this dance in their long program. If they were to nail this routine as anticipated then they are your gold winners....barring any cheating (like what happened at the Vancouver Olympics when the home team Canadians got the inordinate praising) from the judges. My draw dropped when Charlie & Meryl were slighted the gold. Good luck to the pair in Sochi!!
@nightswimmer99
@nightswimmer99 10 жыл бұрын
The Canadians deserved gold in Vancouver. There were 3 rounds then, and Scott nailed the compulsory portion. He was clearly the best at leading his partner in that round. That gave them the lead which they held onto for the win. Even Meryl agreed that silver was "the right color" for her and Charlie in Vancouver. Now with the 2 round format and lifts included in the combined compulsory/SD, Meryl and Charlie have the edge and have had it their way for at least the past 2 years. I'm glad they only got silver in Vancouver. Call me selfish but it gave them the drive to deliver one beautiful skate after another for 4 years, and win and win and give enjoyment to us all. Now they have the Olympic Gold Medal and it's icing on the cake! Congratulations to my favorites Davis and White!

nightswimmer99 Meryl&Charlie deservedly were awarded the gold. "The Canadians" did skate well in Vancouver and in Soche. Yes they executed their (3) score performances with higher numbers in Vancouver which gave them the gold (funny that there total points were higher in Canada) nevertheless Meryl&Charlie were so close to being flawless in Soche and to place the cherry on top..they are pleasant to watch and so very entertaining. So glad that they got the gold and they earned it. The Canadians and M&C share a brilliant coach. This Olympics the medals were reversed and it just goes to show you how dedicated and hardworking these teams are. I still think that there should be a better scoring system. Let me end by saying the Canadians were fierce contenders and are well respected.

Longtime skating watcher (decades -- who has seen it all), who couldn't care less what country different skaters represent. One look at M&C'a "Scheherazade" last fall and it was clear they would win the OGM, clear that they had earned it, clear that I could be very happy for them in their win. Defending champs Tessa and Scott did have the best short dance this year. Best construction of the program, best musicality, best execution of the Finnstep -- as noted by Petra Kokko, who invented it. T&S had a weak FD this season. It may have been well skated, but it was less than inspired. It just didn't have the "ooomph" factor. The judges, as other posters have said, may indeed have had the silver in mind for T&S, but let's face it, they put themselves there, and the best team won.

No ice-dance duo has been able to "tell stories" the way Davis and White have: just think of "Samson and Delilah", "Die Fledermaus", "Notre Dame de Paris" (and even going back to their "John Lennon" piece and "Polovetsian Dances"; plus, many of their short dances). A combination of artistry, athleticism, storytelling that no other ice-dance team has been able to match (and I've watched every single competition since they retired: no other duo -- except P/C, who have a very different style -- even come close). And both Davis and White have matured and grown so much in their dance skills: watch the videos of "LOTF", the show that Cheryl Burke choreographed for some of the best ice-dancers and regular pro dancers that was done just once this past year in Japan: Wow, Meryl and Charlie were sensational: mature and sophisticated (just as Meryl was during her time on DWTS)! I hope that "Love on the Floor" gets made into a DVD. And, going back to their ice-dance career, no duo ever had the consistency of putting out perfect performances time after time like D/W did; won every event (NHK, SA, Grand Prix Finals, Nationals, Olympics) for 2 years straight from 2012 through Olympics of 2014.

@alwilliam3379
@alwilliam3379 9 жыл бұрын
No they literally got a perfect score. 119.50 is the highest you can get. I looked at the protocols. All components got level 4 with the highest possible base values and perfect GOEs. Base values are in solid numbers and GOE are either 1.5 for a base value of less than 8 or 3 for a base value of 8. So it's not possible to get a .55 on the score.

This team (D/W) lost to the best ice-dancing team in the world - Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir (Canada) in the Winter Olympics in 2010 & 2018. D/W did win the gold in 2014 while V/M won silver, but it was later found that in 2014, the Americans, who wanted to win gold for the 1st time EVER in this sport, did not go about it honestly. How that positioning came to be created a rage of debate, especially in a sport with a dotted, wretched history for fairness. In Sochi (2014 Olympics), the US did finally win gold for ice-dancing, but under a dark cloud of cheating. It was discovered & first printed in the French sports paper L'Equipe that there was a backroom deal in which the Americans would score favourably for the Russians & in return , the Russians would score favourably for the Americans. At any other Winter Olympics where these 2 teams competed, Virtue & Moir won gold. It has been said that while both teams are technically excellent, Virtue & Moir have a very special, unique, & unbeatable artistry & are an enormous step above this American couple. V/M wanted to be humble & good sports at Sochi & never called out the judging or the USA (D/M) for their underhanded dealings.
@florencewilliams355

You say that like they didn’t beat V/M in every competition for the last two seasons leading up to this Olympics (not to mention that they also got a perfect score here). Also it’s an allegation that was never actually proven... literally anyone could have seen it coming considering how their podium placements had been their last two seasons, on top of the fact that Russia had a stacked team for the team event. And V/M weren’t very classy when it came to excepting their second place finish either, instead blaming it on coaching. Compared to that of how D/W congratulated V/M back in 2010, and praised their performance every chance they were given. Seems like the two teams only drifted as soon as D/W won the gold in 2011🤷‍♀️
@mehtotheworld4145
@mehtotheworld4145 2 жыл бұрын
That L’Equipe story never gained any traction outside of Canada, where the media embarrassed themselves trying to create controversy where there wasn’t any. V/M’s FD was uninspiring schmaltz. If V/M had put out a FD like Mahler, it may have held up against D/W, but the story fizzled out because Seasons just wasn’t a good program. Now can V/M fans stop being so annoying? They’ve retired, move on. Meryl and Charlie were amazing and Scheherazade was a beautiful program that was thrilling to see in person. Stop with the sour grapes.

@@florencewilliams355 We will probably have to agree to disagree on this one! We might agree, however, on another topic. I definitely think that both teams managed to out-perform almost every other team in the world because they always had each other around to push themselves at every opportunity. They shared a coach & practically trained together which must have created a situation where both teams were incredibly, yet positively challenged. This must have ensured that they were & always motivated to get better & better, at every opportunity. I also think that each couple had different strengths & weaknesses & thus judging them at every competition would not have been easy!

@@mehtotheworld4145 We will probably have to agree to disagree on this one! We might agree, however, on another topic. I definitely think that both teams managed to out-perform almost every other team in the world because they always had each other around to push themselves at every opportunity. Ice dance is about momentum and narrative. V/M had none of it going into Sochi. They had poorer packaging (which you can indeed blame on Marina) and we’re still figuring out their programs at the Olympics. By contrast D/W were doing what they had been doing since the beginning of the season. The judges reward consistency over time
