Keller - the boat is 11 years old. The original ones were made in China and were older technology. It's always difficult to know for sure when they need replacing, but ours were covered with insulating blanket material that was degrading so we decided to replace them now. Once we got the old ones off, we confirmed it was the right decision . The new ones should last a bit longer.

Kathy Clark Thanks! I was just curious and wasn't sure if they had a life limit or something. I follow all your videos and really appreciate all your "up keep" and MX videos!! There great to watch and very informative. I wish more people posted videos of what it takes to maintain an owner operator yacht. keep up the good work.

I have really enjoyed your video blogs of your adventures on Sheer Madness. I'll never be in the league of being able to afford a large Nordhavn such as this, but it's fun and a learning experience to see the engineering choices and designs. Do you have any insight into why a wet exhaust was chosen when Nordhavn generally chooses to install a dry stack exhaust? Thanks, and keep up the great blogs.
@nordhavn729 жыл бұрын
Rob Scott Rob, it's an owner choice when building a boat and Nordhavn will accommodate either choice. Generally, twin engines will be wet exhaust and ours was built as a twin.

Just curious why they needed replacing? -Thanks

Are the exhausts on the76 vented through the air like the 40s single stack exhaust

Congrats on your success. Just curious, was Nordhavn too expensive to get replacement parts, too far away or a combo of both?
@nordhavn729 жыл бұрын
BrownDogPromos The exhaust is part of the engine system - not something Nordhavn would do. They will install the engines and related systems - fuel management, exhaust, etc - when the boat is built, but then service is done through service techs with specific specialties. In this case, Metcalfe Marine specializes in building exhaust systems and Western Branch Diesel specializes in Detroit Diesel service.

They were 10 years old and beginning to deteriorate. Preventive Maintenance.

You were sent out to check if there is exhaust gas coming out? :) Seriously, do you have heat recovery on the exhaust gas? I saw you were in between the ice-bergs and there might have been a bit cold out there without a proper heating.

Don't you have stabilizers?

Never knew Simple Green was a lubricant. Why not WD-40?
@whorayful9 жыл бұрын
+Nater389 WD40 leaves a flammable oily residue/stain, excess simple green can be wiped off with a rag, and it cleans at the same time. Also works as a cleaner :-)

Now I see why the engine room is so large. It gets smaller when you have to do something like this.

I don't understand why Nordhavn went to wet exhaust on all there 60 series twine installations, It just seems way more unreliable than a dry stack keel cool motor fora ocean crosser.
@nordhavn729 жыл бұрын
Ryan Oros It's like the old "Tastes Great - Less Filling" argument. I'm no expert but there are proponents of both wet and dry exhaust. It's an owner's preference when the build is done. I believe that most twins are wet exhaust because of the space requirements for two stacks for dry exhaust, but I'm not sure.

I'm guessing by the way the engines started they had been serviced and the fuel systems opened up while you were up on the dry, if not you have some issues with fuel drain back, both engine starts were a bit 'fluffy'.
@nordhavn729 жыл бұрын
+whorayful Yes, they had some major service and we had the mechanic onboard for the first start up.

+Kathy Clark All good then, they can be temperamental when the fuel filters are changed and a bit of air gets into the fuel lines.
