This hobby box opening of 2015-16 Upper Deck SPx is one of the breaks closest to my heart. I've been one of the earliest adopters and biggest proponents of SPx since the 1990s. I have always seen SPx as the best alternative to Upper Deck Series 1/2 and SP Authentic, which get way too much play for how unimaginative they are, given the range of alternatives out there.
For those of us who prefer products with relics and technological or geometrical experimentation, SPx is unparalleled. So to speak. Sadly, 2015-16 was the last year of SPx priced as a mid-range multi-pack product. This box was $75 upon release and had ten packs, as opposed to the expensive four-card boxes from 2016-17 onward.

Just got back from a trip and came on youtube and this gem came up! I went out of my way to get a hobby box of these a few years ago, they were on sale at the time in 2019 I believe, not my fave recent SPX but far from the worst. ANYWAYS, Wow that Quad was disgustingly good. Def didnt get 1 of those from this set. And $3000 for 1 card, that's hardcore! I've spent that much total on a pc + monitor + peripherals, mic, cam etc but, for a card? Whew. But, like you said it's in your family for life now. It will likely be worth more in a few decades anyways. Collecting cards isnt about the money for me, its about passing down a legacy, leaving someone amazing, and I hope I eventually find the person to put my collection in my will for. I have to ask, I ask everyone this, whats your opinion on card handling? I know some use gloves, I noticed you're not really that shy with touching the cards, I never put my fingers on the faces of the card, when I handle them I only hold the long end edges that way I don't get any fingerprints on them etc. Washing your hands WITHOUT SOAP is important, because you want to remove oils from your hands and what are soaps, they're literally oils, anyway, Im rambling. What was crazy is exactly a month after I bought that card it (not mine, but the exact same grading) sold at auction for USD $6,000 on eBay. But I think the price has come down a bit since then. Mine was about USD $2,600. I know the price was good because the guy who sold it said he would buy it back from me. As for handling the cards, I'm notoriously carefree. I believe cards exist to be handled and traded, just as they were by kids in the 1950s, 1970s, etc. And I don't even mind scraping cases. I'm into ostentatiousness and pretense. To me, objects will always be objects. We don't take them with us when we die, nor do we take all our leftover money. The most beautiful pieces I've ever had - whether cards, antique furniture, or musical instruments - have had a visible history to them. To me, that's what makes them great. Their story. Ppl say money is about greed. I believe it is about envy, of things and stuff. I'm buddhist in the sense that that means nothing to me. Zero. I get value is important. I get I shouldn't handle cards too much. But, I define value broader than a dollar. My entire channel is about sentimentality, not coveting possessions or their condition.

The market has been unpredictable in the last 2 years Ive definitely tried not to go too overboard, Ive been lucky my family likes to always spoil everyone on birthdays and christmas lmao. I always hear from my mother 'use the credit card and order whatever you want just dont go over $500' so I at least have those 2 times a year to go nuts with cards even during the inflation! And yeah I definitely appreciate that part, its cool to know the values but, it doesnt always make them the most special cards. For me, a really really lucky pull of a great player I love is usually the cards with the most sentimentality. I use to go to Wal Mart and buy those mixed bag things, they came in a lil plastic card holder with 1 jersey card and 6 packs for only $10, usually the mid late 2000s sets like Upper Deck, UD MVP, Fleer Ultra, Parkhurst,OPeeCjee, and that's how I got my Ovechkin Young Guns. Only ever opened one pack of cards from that set in my entire life and I got the best card in the set, it just doesnt get better than that, I would never sell it not even for $10,000

Your mom sounds very sweet. Mine has died, but she was the best. I got my Gretzky RC in a 25c pack at the drugstore. In fact, I had two of them and one I gave to a girlfriend when I was a kid. I don't regret it, as it reminds me of who I am.

I feel that though, I had the entire Select Freezers set, and my childhood best friend was a big fan of the Beezer (John Vanbiesbrouck) and we called his called the Beezer Freezer. He never could find 1 so I traded it to him for a Eric Lindros Pinnacle By The Numbers (the jersey shaped ones from 96-97) I coulda gone back and got another one of those freezers later on but Idk I never need to complete sets 100%, I dont care if that adds 'extra value' cause Im not selling them ever anyways right lol! Still waitin on him to get in the HOF, they seem to not really like putting a lot of goalies in. How none are in out of him Hextall Vernon Moog Barrasso and Osgood is beyond me. John in the mid late 90s especially was more popular as far as league wide, not just their team's fans, than even Martin Brodeur or Patrick Roy ever were, was arguably the most popular player in the entire NHL in 96

I was lucky enough to pull that mcdavid when I opened a box of spx many years ago. Lost the card in a fire, went out and replaced it. So even though the card is out of /399. It is actually out of /398.

Terrible about the fire. But what a great anecdote! Very smart to replace it, otherwise it would always be a sore spot. This is one of the reasons I use musical beds. To accentuate the emotional value component of the hobby.

Haha you got too much goalie mojo! Ohh the good ol' days when SPx was a mid tier product with lots of nice looking cards. Yes the odds to land the McDavid rookie auto jersey is ridiculously tough. Definitely need to go into this with low expectations. I think the one and only box that I opened close to the start of my channel landed a Kevin Fiala rookie jersey auto and there was also a Jack Eichel jersey card too! Sadly the price of this stuff has gone up way too much. Can't revisit this!

Funny you say that! I rewatched your vid as research for mine. Yesterday coming back from the grocery store I was thinking how strong your box was. You also hit the Fabbri retro. If healthy, he might make a leap this yr. The Artifacts Emerald // is even better than a Trilogy auto, given Eichel doesn't have an auto and the checklist only has five players. Eichel is by far the best one, plus your card was a jersey-patch #/75. On paper, Fiala pretty much has the same upside as W. Nylander or Ehlers from that 2014 draft class. He's a 20G scorer who just hasn't found the consistency.

Well that goalie mojo was bound to happen, I should've seen it coming..lol. That quad jersey card was an outstanding pull. That purchase is sick and I don't blame you one bit. I will probably have both my ygs for at least the rest of my life, well... maybe if they keep going up I might change my mind..lol. I have a dual mem auto to 399 of Larkin but your's is way nicer. Thanks for saying that. The guy I got it from said he'd buy it back from me in a heartbeat, which made me feel good about the purchase. The market is so volatile right now. My thinking was the safest thing to do is get a 9.5 across the board, and then just hold it permanently.
