I had a deposit down on a 2015 Golf R back in May, 2014, but then VW pulled a fast one and announced late last year that the first 500 vehicles were up for grabs via the Internet. Boo. As a result of that, I decided in December to test drive the Audi S3. Well, I drove home with it. While I never drove the Golf R and suspect it might be more race car tuned than the S3, I found myself enjoying the more sophisticated Audi. And, my wife reminded me that I'm 44 and maybe the Golf R is for a younger demographic. Anyway, I love my S3.

gfellmer I agree with your wife, I'm almost 40 and as much as I wanted to go Golf R, GTI, or WRX, I couldn't see myself driving one of those cars. I found the S3 to be a very sweet ride, but it is just too small (i'm 6'1" 200 lbs), so I went with an S4 myself. Also kills me that they don't offer the S3 in a 6MT.

The golf R does not even come close to the Audi S3. IMO the golf R is ugly and I did not like driving it. Don't be me wrong it's fast but looks like a girls car with the cute little hatch back. Kind of a a VW Beetle with four doors. The S3 destroys the Golf R in looks, sound and over all feel. I just test drove it to see what the hype was about and it was fast and plain, nothing special and it might be ok for your 18 year old daughter. Lol ...S3 all the way!

When I was in my early 20's, I bought my first brand-new car: the original stateside "hot hatch," a 1983 Rabbit GTI. I loved that car and drove the heck out of it for the next 7 years. Every car I've owned since then has also been a manual. This time however, 30-some years later, I picked the S3 ... "sportronic" and all. One test-drive was all it took; the car is on order. The R is no doubt an excellent car, and possibly the better value. I was sold on the overall style and comfort of the Audi -- with speed and agility on tap when desired.

Just got my Sepang Blue S3 this week. No Mag ride because I have aftermarket suspension and wheels I'm swapping over from my A3. With Mag ride you need to buy a system that fools the car to think the system/shocks are still there when they aren't . The S3 though is a phenomenal performance sedan that remains a joy to drive on a daily basis.

Good Afternoon MotoManTV, Excellent review. You really do notice the Haldex AWD. I've driven both S4 and owned 2014 A4 you feel quite the difference in the cornering at high speeds. I just purchased the 2015 Audi S3 (21k miles under the hood) and this car ages extremely well! Backed with a CPO warranty and bunch of other little nifty insurances I feel this car is an excellent intro to German Sport Cars. It's almost like taking German Sports Cars 101. Now onto the power and engine, after about a week of ownership I wanted a quick, peppy car that would get me from point A to Point B with a bit of style. This car exceeds expectations in all categories. I get head turns and nods of approval almost every where I go especially form the exhaust notes that chime through the quad exhaust. I had recently chipped and threw a APR Intake on the car which puts the car almost 80 HP and 60 Ft/lbs of torque (advertised not dynoed). Onto the driving experience; In my day I used to work at Car Auction (I won't name it because I don't want to get anyone in trouble). Although that car auction used to have cars listed there on consignment. I'd drive everything from BMWS, Mercs, Mustangs. For the price of this car, and the price I paid for a CPO, I believe this is the best bang for your buck. Thanks for your hard work,
@barrycook81169 жыл бұрын
I think this is not a bad review however the more I drive my S3 I do not at all think it's front wheel bias at all. I think its evenly distributed which sets this car apart from others. The Golf R I test drove and the looks do not even compare to the S3 and the WRX "Sti" is in my opinion cheaply made and the S3 is still better in performance. The S3 is more luxury and performance where as the WRX is a young gen car. I love my S3 and I am glad I waited for as long as I did to buy it. Matt Farah on the drive network has an awesome review on the S3. Fully loaded is well worth 50K. However only paid little over 46k minus two small options. Best car I have ever owned. This car is very solid and feels like it weighs more in a good way. I did a 4.4 zero to 60 and a 12.8 quarter mile stock. Not bad!

Barry I feel the same way about my s3! Couldn't of made a better purchase! I share identical numbers on the 0-60 and quarter mile. I have it tuned through apr stage 2 and it's a loose animal that can't be tamed! My cornering is just perfect!

As a previous 2009 WRX owner who traded it for a 2010 GTI; I really like the better interior of the VW over Subaru. But the hatchback utility is unmatched in the Golf R. I'd consider the S3 if it wasn't a boring sedan. I never care what others think so that never has bearing on my decision. The Annoying part about the GTI vs the WRX has been the annoying FWD. The GTI is a sporty car where the WRX was much closer to being a sports car you could drive aggressively. I track my cars and the GTI I took once and never again. Maybe the Golf R would be a good daily driver in DSG form and I have my stiff noisy manual RWD car for track use. My choice the Golf R. Nice videos btw.

Test drove the S3 and loved it; still waiting for the R to land. But Golf R because hatch and manual, both of which are non-negotiable. Glad the R has DCC but I'd switch to 18" wheels because 19s seem a bit excessive. The Audi badge doesn't do anything for me, and I don't need the nicer interior because the R is plenty nice already. Glad the 2016s will have CarPlay, bigger screen, and a faster processor for the nav/media player.

I picked up a 2015 A3 2.0 Quattro w/ magnetic ride control and 19' wheels, mmi, HK sound, sport seats. The sticker was 43k. I leased it with $2500 driveoff and $366 mo. (including tax, title, reg). There was very little negotiating room on the S3. I use it for getting around Hollywood and every other month up to silicon valley. Occasionally a quick sprint thru Topanga/Malibu for fun. I don't really notice any concerning body roll. But basically it's my get around car, which it handles perfectly. Great on gas, terrific adjustable ride, enough storage, parkable anywhere, tremendous sound package, excellent interface, and attractive enough to get compliments. Btw, I just didn't like the interior of the VW. The A3 is incredibly quick (in real world terms). A pinch of turbo lag in auto, but no slouch in manual. On the 5 freeway (California) it is difficult to keep under 90 mph. It rolls along flawlessly, passes cars effortlessly like my old Porsche 996 4s, and accelerates up the 4140' Tejon Pass with 2 people and 4 bags like I was on flat ground, again sprinting to 90 mph w/o working, and would easily surpass that speed if I kept on the pedal. My point is that the S3 was a fun test drive, but for the money, fuel economy and fun, the 2.0 quattro w the right options didn't feel like much of a sacrifice. I disagree that is a VERY different auto configured as such. But since I drive in the real world of so. cal, and not on a track, I don't notice any sacrifice. I am extremely happy, and it has cut down on my jonesing for yet another Porsche.

Why do people like hatchbacks? I know everyone had their own preferences but I just honestly want to know what attracts them to it. Again, I'm not trying to be condescending. Just trying to understand. Thanks.
@bighands699 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking they are lighter and tend to handle in a unique way that make them fun to drive. An under powered hot hatch can still be fun to drive and be cheap at the same time.

The trunk door is way bigger than the sedan's. The trunk may be a bit smaller but the bigger lid makes it more practical. Plus, personally hatchbacks look A LOT better than their sedan siblings
@acefighterpilot3 жыл бұрын
There is the visual aspect: I much prefer the strong 'hockey stick' C pillar of the Golf. Hatches are not as a rule more attractive than their sedan siblings however, it depends on the model range. More practically, my job requires me to be able to transport a 22" x 22" x 48" box. It fits nicely in my Golf. Not so in any sedan.

I'd say the regular WRX is more of an S3 competitor right now. I was shopping used S3's and S4's to find a fun AWD commuter car in my budget. I ended up just getting a new WRX. If I could afford a new S3 I'd probably just buy a CPO S4. The S3 is actually a little cramped feeling compared to the WRX and my golf clubs and luggage wouldn't fit in the S3 trunk. Out of those three I'd say the S3 because of the styling over the Golf and way over the STI for styling, everyday driving, gas mileage, interior, etc.

I just picked up a 2010 A3 2.0T Quattro with 160,000 kms. Audi had to replace the transmission and then sold it to me. The car looks and drives like brand new. Virtually no tech(age) but I love it because it got so much power at low torch and good handling with grip. Middle priced option I would pick A3.

Andrew Rubin If you take a look at our Golf R film (kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6ebaH19rq6Soqs) there is a reference towards the end about the differences. That said, while they have a lot of the same components and share platform items, they are tuned more different than you think . . .

last week I test drove a GTI (performance pack and DCC), Golf R, and S3 back to back. The first two with manuals and the later with the DSG. Honestly, I think I would take the GTI. The S3 and the golf R had noticeably more power but I found the torque steer with the AWD to be a bit wonky. I had a hard time seeing much value added in the S3 over the Golf R unless I was dead set on getting a sedan with 4 doors. For $30k you can a get practical well-optioned GTI with a nice interior and 90% of the performance of the other two and you still have $10-15k in your pocket. Honestly I have no clue who would buy the A3.

In regards to the cla 45. I have not driven that car. Im not even going to argue that the s3 is faster or better. What I will argue is that the s3 is 12 to 15k cheaper for a comparable model. The cla 45 are being sold at or close to msrp while the s3 are getting very good discounts. Value wise the s3 is hands down the winner but if you take money out of the equation then the cla wins hands down. Unfortunately, most people cant take money out of the equation. Value is very important in my eyes.

MSRP not always the true tale of what you can buy the car for. I was recently pricing both Audi s3 and Volkswagen golf r in the chicago area. I priced the same exact car that motoman reviewed (just under 50 k) and a fully loaded golf r (just under 40 k). Two different audi dealers offered 4200 off MSRP so the car was 45750. One VW dealership offered 1k off MSRP. All other VW dealerships were at 39910 (msrp). I would rather pay 45750 for an audi s3 prestige with magnetic ride control, then pay 39k for a fully loaded golf r. The audi is so much more luxurious and I like the styling of the audi better. The golf r is still awesome but the s3 way more luxurious and stylish.

Me and my wife are in our mid 20s, after bad choice on cars(2012 Audi A6, 2010 Audi Q5), we finally understand that we dont need big cars(no kids) and got our self a 15 subaru STi and bmw M235i. Subaru is a weekend car because is much more composed and engaging to drive on anywhere. BMW is a great car, very powerful, quiet and comfortable, but the suspension is not on par with the sti, the rear is too lose for any kind sport driving. Why no audi or mercedes? Audi is basically a FWD so is the mercedes cla45, they both using cheaper everything compare to their own line up(cheaper quattro, FWD bias 4matic, CLA's interior is a shame on mercedes, so is the Audi's shape). I think BMW wins on this one, it kept the same quality, same concept as their higher end cars, they put m235i as a lighter, more compact 4, not a more expensive mini, it use the same FR as any of the bmw as it should, same interior parts as any bmw. In the other hand, Audi or mercedes would never put a FWD on any other mercedes besides CLA, because it's not a real mercedes tradition(too cheap), Audi is basically a VW with different design, not even more expensive design. Subaru? you will forget any of them once you drive it :) you can check my channel about driving sti on mt roads.

Hmmm, Subaru has replaced the horizontally opposed boxer (the cool sound) with a more traditional 4 cyl, granted it sounds good for a 4cyl. You could get the latest STI with the boxer, but it's also slower around a track than the MK7 Golf R.... Before the Golf R (and R32) justified the higher price because it was much more luxurious inside.... now it's still a 10x increase in interior quality, and it's faster.... Focus RS is still on the horizon, but until it comes out, the mk7 R is where it's at. Even seen a few videos where it's faster than the A45 (which is laughably priced, IMO), though I won't cite that as truth until I see a real comparison. If I'm buying RIGHT NOW, I preorder the MK7 R (even though I currently own an MK6 R), if I can wait 8+months, there's no way I make ANY decision until we really see the RS. The RS interior won't be up to snuff with VW, but should compare or be slightly better than the STI. The RS will no doubt be the best handling, fastest, noisiest sub 40k AWD and most raw fun of the bunch.

I own a '13 Mk6 Golf R, and the new MK7 R is closer to my needs (sporting and practicality) than the S3. My car is low-mileage, but the new R is very temping, especially with the DSG. The wife doesn't do well with a stick, and long trips in an old Lexus just doesn't do it for me. :(

This is all speculative since I didn't drive any of these cars, but I think I'd take the Golf R. I like the minimalist interior of the Audi the best, but the Golf seems like a better value. The STI is really not my thing, it's too adolescent and I wouldn't feel comfortable driving it. At the end of the day though, I prefer RWD and a less front-heavy weight bias, so if I had to pick something in this class I'd probably take the 228i or M235i over any of these.

Fan Boi Fax: 5-50% rear-bias, stage 1 ECU tune = S7 speed (3.7,9.2 0-60,100), NOT built in Germany but Hungary (just like the GTI being built in Mexico). So, in an essence, the Golf R is actually the most German car.

The North American S3 is built in Ingolstadt, Germany. Not that the Hungarian-built ones aren't probably every bit as good.

2015 Sti All day! For 35k I get all the options in the S3 ! 6 speed I can change the differential in the car to a rear bias unlike the S3. An for half the price!

All depends on how you option it out. If you go light and do the Performance Package - which gives you the Sport Suspension - you are US$42,500.

@yourfast079 жыл бұрын
Well it's $45 k with high quality interior, interior feels like it's 60k car, 0-60 4.7 as tested but with simple tune by brands like APR or REVO, you get 1/4 in 12.00 yes 12 seconds, now that beats camaro z28 that's $70k and just by being 12 second car that beats a lot of cars way more expensive then that. You want fast cheap made and cheap price, buy American
@dp2world239 жыл бұрын
yourfast07 I would rather spend that on a S5 or S4. I just do not see the point. However, to each his on.
@cjmoritz9 жыл бұрын
does NOT compete with the CLA AMG nor the M235, the RS3 would do that, there is nothing besides the Golf or Subie you would compare it to performance wise, that said the S3 is a huge step up in fit & finish. 2015 S3 sepang blue 19" perf. pack, B&O stereo & Nav OWNER :o)
@Pietervdv9 жыл бұрын
If you single it out as a compact luxury performance car, this car totally makes sense. It's an S4 on a budget and probably more agile that its bigger brother. If you compare it to a Golf R, it doesn't make sense at all to buy the Audi. Then again, if that's your leading line of thinking, why not buy a performance version of a Skoda or Seat? The badge matters. The luxury goodies matter. You buy a Volkswagen, you treat yourself to an Audi.

Mreljunior47 Good question: When I am driving just normal around town, I set everything but the engine to dynamic. The engine I set on the eco (or whatever they call it). In the canyons - full fat.

Great thanks, and do you live in sport mode or do you keep it in drive?

Mreljunior47 Canyons and most of the time around town, sport mode/shift on my own. However, when I am just relaxed, drive.
@Mreljunior479 жыл бұрын
Awesome thanks, so when your in sport mode you don't have to shift manually using the padal shifters on the steering wheel correct, you can just drive it automatically if you desire too right?

I would get the Type R, lighter and the manual for sure, but if I was going to spend 49k for the S3 then I would spend another 10k to buy a base 2014 Stingray with 460hp.

Well, I've pre-ordered a MkVII Golf R. Why? Better value for the money. The Audi really has the same stuff only you're paying to have four rings in the grille.
@EricBeckman9 жыл бұрын
I don't think I'm wrong for my own vehicle. There is a $5000 grand price difference and even more with a comparatively equipped Audi with my fully loaded Golf R. For my money the Golf R is a better value than the S3 which is the identical motor and underpinnings and it's a much more practical car for me.

The golf R is only fast with dual clutch! With manual I believe u have to shift really really early to get to 60mph so the 0-60 will be much slower thank the dual clutch version solo STI wins!

***** Funny, because I've had 02.5GTI, 00TT, 04R32, 08A3 S-line, 12CC, and now 13GolfR.... they're all the same.... everything i've had that was nicer, I had to pay for, you get NOTHING inherently better (cost for cost) with buying the audi. You're paying for 4 rings, software, and a different MMI... Hell my boss drooled over the CC interior (and he's an S4 owner). Audi makes some much nicer cars, but near the lower end of the model range, we're talking 90% shared parts. Eric Beckman you made the ONLY choice, unless of course you can wait for the Focus RS, then you'd need to decide between ultimate daily, or ultimate driving machine.
@stevenberson89919 жыл бұрын
I like the car but 42k+ is a bit too much. The inside looks a bit to simple for me. The a3 model for 30k is a great value! With 40k range i think i would go with the lexus rc or bmw 4 series. Just my opinion.

Electronic adjustable dampening would be better than magnetic ride control for the simple fact that each shock costs 800-1000 dollars. If that ever had premature issues and you're out of warranty or the second owner that would not be good. Don't know why they like to complicate the system like that. Same goal achieved and one is more serviceable than the other.

Would get an S3, but a hatch, not a sedan. Better ride, better quality materials inside, better infotainment system, B&O > Fender, etc.
@LlyleHunter9 жыл бұрын
I'd get the S3 if they would bring the hatch to The United States.
@reidconti9 жыл бұрын
Are you sure the S3 has a better ride? My understanding is it's the same. Also, are you sure the B&O is better than the Fender system? I'm with you on the hatch>sedan thing though.
@nrnccrdn9 жыл бұрын
Reid Conti By 'ride', I meant car itself, not ride quality :) Materials used for S3 interior are far superior, MMI system is way better and B&O kicks Fender's butt all day, any day. Had a chance to listen to both, B&O has a better sound quality and is a lot louder (and when you turn the volume up, the sound doesn't get distorted as it does with Fender). Had an audiophile friend in cars as well, that was his verdict.
@ryanlevyy5 жыл бұрын
honestly, this guy bashes the A3 too much. He's comparing a base A3 to an S3....obviously the S3 will handle better and be faster....that's the whole point BUT if we look at the A3 with the S-line pack (sport suspension, 19 inch wheels with super sticky rubber (235 wide as well), the 2.0T quattro, it handles VERY well. This is true for the 2017 and 2018. Have not driven the 2015 and 16 to compare. Now as for price, tune it with stage 2, turboback, rear sway bar, and coil-overs you've got a car that out handles and and is quicker than an S3 for about the same price as an S3.
@ferrari49589 жыл бұрын
yourfast07 take the s4 or s5, but this does not compete with M3 or AMG. If you have to tune a car to get the performance you want then might want to spend the money and go to the higher model. I really wouldn't compare to Camaro, etc. Z28 is a track car, this IS NOT A TRACK CAR. I would even stay away from the SS. Those are sports cars, this is a sort of high end sub compact. It is being compared to the Subaru. A really good car, but just not the main choice for most high demand drivers.

Golf R's only problem is the fact it looks too much like a golf interior/exterior. Class it up a little, sure I'd buy it... but the current Golf R big old yawn to look at and I don't want to ride in a 40k Golf and stare at a Golf interior. The difference between the golf R and the interiors of even the MKIV GTI/GLI are too few. Performance is better in the R, but at that cost, I'd prefer the Audi looks and materials.

Impressive, but not from a price point prospective, and definitely audi S3 if the difference between both is only 5 grand. Thats just simple logic..

Oh how to a hate brand cross contamination! IF a manufacturer is going to have 2 or 3 "different" brands, like VW, Audi, and Porsche, I want each brand to be unique. EVERY Audi should start at a level of refinement that VW ends at. Also, Quattro should be in every Audi car, It's their signature trade mark! Definitely not a front wheel drive biased system that is from a VW.

Robert Gagauf That sounds so condescending--as if the only difference between the two is brand image... For one, the interior of the S3 is much more refined, IMO. (Yes, this is subjective.) It is minimalist and functional. It even looks like they took some design cues from a Gallardo.
