Great review. I just picked up a 2015 and you’ve hit the nail on the head in your description of it. My recent cars were Audi S5, Audi TTS, C5 Corvette, Mustang GT, and a BMW 135i. My Z4 sdrive35i is leagues ahead of them all.

Hey! We have similar tastes! I've had some very close experiences too and the Z4 seriously stands above the rest in so many tangible ways. Anyone that can should absolutely give these a shot - the turbo-6 is such a treat and the whole assortment of amenities and driving goodies just makes the Z one heck of a driver's car. Glad to hear yours is treating you well! Thanks for stopping by!

Interesting. I had Z4 Mk1 (E85) and I'm on TTS now but considering this Z4 Mk2 (E89). However good 35iS models are pretty expensive over here. Mustang, 135i, Corvette C5 etc are cheaper

I have a 35is. To any prospective buyers, look for a 2015-2016 build. As we all know the n54 block isn't the easiest to work on and there's quite a few components around 10 yr / 100k miles which start failing. Electric water pump, HPFP, injectors, turbos, engine bay plastics, dct needs oil service. Gaskets and seals all around the engine are the first to fail. BMW struck a partnership with toyota in the early 2010s' for component sharing. One the things to come out of it was the change in compound for gaskets and plastics. Some are still made in Japan. Later models have better fuel injectors and water pump. The stock turbos are made by Mitsubishi, which were also revised for better reliability. Z4 has modern electric assist steering, not hydraulic.

You are sooo right. This Z4 E89 is such a magnificent car. I own the 28i and I love it more and more each day. Even just looking at it makes me tingle inside. I really a planning to extend my car-collection with a 35i or 35is soon also and I am sure I will NEVER part with them again. I am crazy about cars and I have had some great ones, but these BMW's are just in a league of their own.

Spot on review. Picked up a 2014 35i recently and it is just a constant grin generator. Only complaint is the slightly numb on-center steering (loads up nicely in the the corners), but that is apparently common to most modern BMWs. Just a joy to drive, especially with the top down. Well done, Darren!

I’ve got the manual 2011 version of this, I’ve had it 9 years, I can’t find anything to rival it. In a sports car, it’s got to be manual, the change down a hairpin bend going downhill is an art form. I’ve had a dual clutch VFR motorbike and it’s good, my hybrid car is automatic and that’s good, but for spirited driving in a sports car it’s got to be manual. Great video.

That is a really nice full spec Valencia Orange with Tracion Design package 35is you had there.. I have the same car, same color and also 35is but from 2014.. Only thing I'm missing is the full leather package that adds leather on top of the dashboard and doors which makes the car look even nicer with even more orange sticthing, but it still looks very nice with the standard black on top.. The full spec ones are real unicorns.. It's a really beautiful car that is a joy to drive, totally agree (obviously as an owner)..

My wife always wanted a convertible sports car and had narrowed it down to the Z4, the SLK, and Boxster. We ruled out the Boxster due to cost (our good friends have a German-made Boxster), and not exactly what she was looking for. She wanted more of a touring-type experience, not so much sports-oriented. That left the BMW and Mercedes. The Mercedes is a very nice car and one that my sister went with. To my wife's eyes (and mine as well), the Z4 just has a more classic look to it that will age more gracefully than the SLK. Only time will tell but we are both very happy with her choice and especially now that the Z4 replacement is out. We're both not fans of the current styling and loss of the hardtop convertible. Her's is 2015 Valencia Orange with the Hyper Orange interior, a great combination. The only things we have done to her car is replace the gloss black interior pieces with gloss actual carbon fiber pieces and the roll-over hoop covers were painted body color. Nice car to take out on a Texas Hill Country weekend drive, especially now in the fall/winter time. I am surprised that you didn't demonstrate the folding top. What color is the top, by the way? My wife's is body color orange.
@darrendrives

It's definitely tough to place the Boxster, SLC, and Z alongside each other given how vastly different each is. The Z stands apart for a number of reasons, but whichever one you care to point out, you know it all adds up to a spectacular drive. To answer, this does have the body-matched orange top as well. Thanks for stopping by!

You are soo right. The lines and also the interior of the E89 is just gorgeous. I have the Z4 in Sapphire-Black metallic and I admire it more and more each day. It is extremely undervalued (IMHO) still, and I am sure I will NEVER part with it again. I am just afraid that petrol-cars might be forbidden in about 5 to 10 years in this completely crazy political climate.
@mpc007
@mpc007 Жыл бұрын
@@rjwassenaar7511 Unfortunately I wouldn't call them undervalued price-wise. Price for nice 35iS models has been stable over past five years (no depreciation when mileage stays same) so any chance they will become E85 cheap is very small

I own a 2016 28i in sapphire-black metallic with red leather interior. And I love it more and more each day. Driving it is sooo much fun, although it is a bit unforgiving on less than perfect roads, and it is a real guzzler when I drive it in sport+. But I will NEVER ever part with it again and I am really even thinking about buying a 35i or 35is also, because the engine is much better, although that one is even more thirsty. I have driven a Boxster S also, and that was a great car, but it did not make me love the looks of it so much and the interior of the BMW is just much nicer. And I have always driven a manual, and this BMW is my first automatic, but it drives sooo wonderfully. I really think this is the sweet spot of all the cars BMW EVER made, perhaps only with the exception of the 507. But ofcourse I have never driven that one....;)

All the aspects that you touch on here, is exactly what I'm currently basing my search on. However, I've been out of the car world for over a decade, so I have no idea which cars are this way. At the moment, this car, and a little bit different, but similarly spoken about wrt just being a lot of fun, the Fiesta ST. I'm looking for fun, driver experience, that is not too harsh (like say some M cars, or to extreme with the engine, but rather smooth and linear. Something a non racer skilled person can just enjoy. Simplicity over many gadgets and features, basically none of what most of the recent cars has to offer) Any other cars you can point me to?

What is your opinion on BMWs cost of ownership. I am really interested in the new Z4, but I was primarily a Toyota guy. Debating between this and the Supra.
@darrendrives
@darrendrives Жыл бұрын
It's a tad bit tough to say right now. By all accounts, a lot of the BMWs stuff will carry a premium by nature of it being branded BMW and being sold/repaired/maintained with BMW technicians in BMW service centers, but both cars share a lot will be more expensive than your typical Toyota or even entry-level BMW just by nature of them being more specialized sports cars. I suspect that a turbo-4 Supra will be the most cost effective to own of the list, but it will also greatly depend on long term reliability and longevity - things we aren't totally sure about yet. On the other hand, the I6 has proven itself to be extremely robust over the years, so it may not be a bad option going that route if you really do intend to hang onto it for the long haul, plus it will help resale/residuals, but then you're looking at higher initial costs, insurance, fueling, etc. And many of the I6 specific bits and bobs will be more expensive. My personal opinion? If this is a short term lease kind of deal and you just want something neat to knock around in - a turbo-4 Supra will be the least expensive way into that world. Likewise, if you're buying solely based on value, turbo-4 Supra is a good option. But if it were my money, the I6 Supra has my heart. Even with the top-down fun of a Z to entice me and the value of the turbo-4 Supra right there, the I6 Supra is just peak sports car fun to me. If you want the luxury, looks, and optional amenities, the Z is definitely nice, but the cost difference for the experience you get is not worth it, imho. I wouldn't let that prevent you from buying one if you're set on it, I just think the Supra will give you the better value, no matter which way you spin it. Of course, you'll have to weigh coupe versus convertible too, and that's a whole different question. Z4 convertibles have always been a real joy to drive, so try one out before you make a decision - it may sway it! If longevity and performance and resale is the key goal, then the I6 Supra might be your best bet. Especially with the manual variant on the way, that may very well be the last of its kind and one of the best sports cars there will be for some time!

I can't personally speak to removing the antenna - I'm absolutely sure it can be done, if you don't mind rerouting radio signals through something else, or losing things like radio/comms altogether, but I haven't had personal experience doing so. Having a technician or specialist or modder you trust help you with that is probably going to be your best bet. As for the labels; they're usually stickers of some sort. I'm sure you could remove those with minimal effort and clean off the residual adhesive. I'd advise caution because I'm sure they had their reasons to place them there, but it shouldn't be any trouble removing them! Good luck!

Unfortunately not; this E89 generation ran from 2010-2016 and has been replaced by the new G29 model, which ditches the folding hardtop for a ragtop instead and shares a common architecture with the new J29 Toyota Supra. In my humble opinion, the E89 is a superior car to the G29 - if even just for being a better value and more complete package - although both are undeniably fun to drive. If you want a new Z4, you will not go wrong with the latest G29, but some features like the folding hardtop convertible will be missing. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose! I enjoyed the E85 Z4 - they were really something to behold. The E86 revision I have a bit less experience with, but favorable nonetheless. This is a different car for a different time. Z Series loyalists where thrilled with the E89 upon its debut and many continue to enjoy them to this day. I find it to be the perfect compromise for modern fun, but what I enjoy may not be what you enjoy, no harm in that. Keep on keeping on
