Beautiful opening as always and cool idea to film the road trip! Love the sound of these throaty twin-turbo V8s from AMG! I'm not a huge fan of the current SL looks myself but the upcoming facelift should help. I agree with your ending statements about AMG, out of the big 3 German luxury performance brands, AMG is definitely my favorite with how much character they have. Keep up the great work Guido!

Amazing review as usual!! The SL63 has been my dream car for quite some time now...and I love the new model that is launching soon. I have seen this review many times before, but this is the first time that I am commenting :) The review really touched me emotionally, especially when you described the feeling of driving it. Congrats for producing 50 reviews. Since you are for me a Porsche guy, I missed some remarks how the SL compares to the Porsche Turbo you reviewed? Personally I have driven the SL with 564 HP. No other car can compete with it in terms of versatility like the SL 63. It is fast as hell, sounds awesome, the seats are amazing and you can drive it as a coupe or cabriolet. I like the new 911 Turbo a lot, it might look nicer, but be honest......in which one would you travel 1000km? I would take the SL 63 any day......

msobic I agree with you. The SL63 is a nicer car for travling fast on the autobahn than any 911 I think. And given how poorly Porsche is treating me at the moment, not letting me review more cars and not replying to emails, I was more than happy that AMG jumped in their place again and let me review and test a special car for review No.50 :) I adore this SL. One of your best reviews so far, thanks for it! Is there any car from other manufacturers that delivers even a louder, more roaring V8 sound and better built quality?? Then, you said it reaches 100 in 4.2s, which is a bit high considering its light weight and high PS and torque. A CLS AMG makes it in below 4s, or Porsche even lower. How comes?

The numbers are from Mercedes, but I believe a magazine in germany recorded 3,9 sec actually...Given the power the rear tires aren't that wide and of course a cls with AWD or a 911 have way better traction of the line, but wouldn't stand a chance above 160 kph I would say :)

Die Automatik und das hohe Gewicht spielen dabei eine Rolle. Allerdings wirst du subjektiv wirklich keinen Mangel an Kraft spüren ;)

Traktion dürfte auch eine Rolle Spielen denke ich. Wir haben nen SL 500 in der Firma und der hat schon dezent Probleme die 450PS (oder so?) auf die Strasse zu bringen, auch bei trockener Fahrbahn. Andererseits sind die Dinger ja auch nicht für Beschleunigungsrennen gebaut :)

Traktion würde ich sagen. Knapp 600 PS und Heckantrieb wollen erst mal auf die Straße gebracht werden. Gleiches sieht man z.B. auch beim M5 usw... Die E-Klasse mit gleichem Motor braucht mit Allrad 3,7 Sekunden von 0-100.

Mike981S I'd actually prefer this for fast Autobahn Driving on a regular basis. Even to a 991 Turbo. The steering and the suspension are just so great for highspeed driving, Mike ! And you know my dilemma with Porsche not giving me more cars this year ;)

Mike981S More passion for Porsches cars is as strong as ever, but their pr-people keep playing kat and dog with me, which I won't take any longer...I always wanted to bring more variaty to the channel but some companies simply refuse to give me cars, others slowly change their mind now...Others let me down. Leider ist der Motor doch recht anfällig, Bei meinem 2015er ist der komplette Motorkabelbaum verölt. Kostenvoranschlag bei Daimler von ca. 7.000 € Ansonsten ist das Fahrzeug natürlich ein Traum 🙂

Ok, so what would you pick, a 911 Carrera 4s, or an SL63 AMG? The reason I ask about the 4s, is that the 4s with all the options I want costs about the same as the SL63 AMG.

I'd get the 4s- nice as the SL63 is, it isn't as rewarding and as customisable, so that's why I'd pick a 4s.

It's been asked a long time ago, but as I used to own a 991 Carrera and my Dad has a SL ill try to answer that: Two very different kinds of cars, even if people compare them all the time. A 911 is much more sportscar than the SL. The SL is much more comfortable. Not that the Porsche is uncomfortable, but its lower, its harder, its lighter and doesnt get all those luxury extras you get in the SL (Massage Seats, Panorama Roof in a Convertible etc.). So if you like cornering, really sporty driving and dont give a crap about those uber luxury things -> Carrera 4S Also that one can be bought as a manual.. If you drive a lot and like to get there fast in style and comfy with decent handling -> SL Just for comparison Issues ill throw the M6 in as well. Which is trying to do both things, and fails miserably IMO. Too hardcore and lacking extras to be truly a comfortable GT car and too heavy and big to feel anything like the porsche in corners. It feels like it couldnt decide what it wanted to be and then got stuck in a bad place. Im usually a BMW fan but I was really disapointed when I got to drive it. The Alpina B6 is the way to go if you like BMWs. Also in germany a 4S is around 150k-160k-ish, the SL around 180k? Did you get any of them in the end? :)

Baerzilla Not yet- my plans have changed, and I decided to move houses instead! :D That said, I've decided that I'm definitely a 911 fan- having driven different versions of it, I can say that it's an amazing car, and the SL is simply not what I'm after at the moment. As for BMW, I totally agree with you. The only BMW I like is the X5 50i, but even that car is a few level below the Cayenne, so Porsche it is!

Vitaly Kutuzov The M4 is actually really good. Got that as a replacement for my 911. 911 still was better, but also quite more expensive. The M2 is downright amazing though. And a bargain if you manage to get one.

AMG LIFE Die 537 und 564 PS Varianten gibt es seit 2014 garnicht mehr, sondern nur noch 585 PS. Du zahlst also keinen Mehrpreis für die PS, die 2LOOK Edition ist ein reines Optik und Interieur-Paket. Was das Auto hier noch hatte ist tatsächlich das Performance Paket ( mit Anhebung der Vmax auf 300km'h ) und die Karbon-Keramik-Bremse. Die denke auch die 21 PS wären bei dieser Leistungsklasse nicht spürbar :) Grüsse, Guido

Great review and congrats on getting to 50 reviews! It's a great car, no doubt. However, I also think they messed up the design. Somehow, the AMG versions are not that bad on the front but the normal SL just looks strange, especially the headlights. I think it shows in general popularity as well. The SL is quite popular where I live and I spot many SLs but this latest generation is very rare to find. When I visited the Mercedes Museum, they had all generations of SLs lined up. Each and every generation a true style icon of its period but at the end of the line this generation was simply put the ugly girl in the group. Mercedes can't get the facelift out soon enough in my opinion.

A base Jaguar F-Type coupe needs to meet with Guido for a test. Why Guido, why a base F-type you ask? Well, Guido seems to give a very unique, detailed and mechanical perspective on the cars he reviews. He does get a chance to test cars on the autobahn and on locations where many other reviewers are limited, so his perspective is great. The Base F-Type coupe has not been reviewed really by any major KZbin channel, and I feel there needs to be more content surrounding a car that competes with a Cayman S fiercely. The car does not have the same limited slip differential as in the S and R models, and comes set up differently. I am wondering what the Getawayer would say in terms of high speed stability, cornering, steering feel, brake feel on the base brakes. Please keep this car in mind Guido, thanks! Great review on the SL, I only have the 500 model, but I still love it to bits with its 516 lb ft. of torque!

The power of the 63 is almost too much for public roads, haha...As far as Jaguars go: I did review the XK, but since than Jaguar hasn't given me another press car. Their german pr-department promised me more tests in 2012 and then changed its mind. I asked Jaguar Germany about the F-Type but they won't even answer my email. Maybe somebody needs to tell their UK headquater about this, but I'm affraid my english isn't good enough for that haha :)

The other day I commented on your SLK55 video about my 55 experience. Although I love AMG's, I didn't really like the 55; it didn't really feel like it liked being pushed. Instead I got an SL400, and I love it. The SLK and SL's really are a world apart for me. Amazingly, the SL feels more lively and willing. Thank you for your great work!

AndreasLawson Thanks Andreas ! I'm horrible replying when I'm on that drug called video editing...I did like the SLK alot though, but I only spent a week in it, so I trust your verdict as an owner. I'd say its abit livier and agile because of its size, which I loved and on my favourite roads the power was just right. The SL63 is almost too fast for the roads I usually drive, but I really adore that about it...Love this car. It's in the Top3 of my testcars for sure :)

Always love coming home to your stuff, it's quality material and I really enjoy hearing your thoughts on these machines. I briefly drove the less powerful SL AMG on a British national press test day last year, and I really, really liked it. Rapid, comfortable, and actually pretty good fun. Very nice video, I can feel the torque right here :) Only thing I dont really like about this SL is the design at the front, It could be a little prettier. Vali Sechi This is a much much faster car than a 911 4S...Much faster...If I tell you that it turns 4600rpm in 7th gear at an indicated 307 km'h, still willing to accelerate...There's no match to that....The Turbo is a different thing. It mainly wins because of the faster PDK, I'd say...But as a car to cruise at over 250 km'h regulary here in germany, I'd prefer the SL...I'm serious. Best feeling car on the autobahn I reviewed for my channel

The word, “timeless”, is so overused in car reviews. It just makes the reviewer lack credibility. Find out the definition BEFORE you use it. Whether you like this car or not, (I don’t - I think it looks like the devil), it is NOT timeless.
