I do most, if not all repairs, with tools that I carry around in my overloaded 1997 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. I perform "On-Site" braking and suspension repairs, amongst other diagnostics and services. My tools consist mostly of Craftsman, a few Stanley, Snap-On, Husky, Pittsburgh, and S&K tools. Scan tools include hand held Actron(s) DVOMs, and test lights. I also currently use a Zurich ZR Pro, for advanced and bidirectional diagnostics as well as a Snap-On Verus Pro, for more detailed diagnostics. This, to me, is one of the finest videos I've seen of a brake job. The camera work is excellent. The gentleman doing the work does a superb delivery explaining procedures and gives clear suggestions for each part of procedure at hand. This is almost like a documentary and something anyone else making 'how to do videos' would gain insight. to both clarity and explanation. Thanks very much

Great job and great video done by a working man in difficult circumstances (those hands have really seen some action). Only two minor improvements from this Nottingham UK guy … after refitting the metal clips add a little grease into the slots where the brake pads will slide and secondly, when winding back the piston with the G clamp, open the engine compartment and take off the rubber lid of the brake master cylinder because as you’re pushing in the piston you’re also pushing the brake fluid back up the system.
@HouseCallAutoRepair
@HouseCallAutoRepair 3 жыл бұрын
The little rubber cap on the master cylinder does NOT need to be removed, unless you EXPECT an overflow, because the cap is VENTED. Here in the SALT BELT, if you add grease to the ears of the pads, they attract sand, dirt, and salt, and wedge themselves in place. Methods in the SALT BELT differ from the rest of the real world.

Some videos may go beyond that, but for the time being, it's geared towards the "Do It Yourself" that anyone can do with auto parts store rental tools, and basic hand tools. Power tools are used mostly to speed things up, but there ARE jobs that NEED impact!

Until I dismounted my tires to install new tires, and replaced front and rear brake pads on my 2018 Rav-4, I wasn't aware that the last :mechanic" at the Toyota dealership doing the still free tire rotations at the time, when I removed the lug nuts, some came off easy, but at least one lugnut on each wheel was overtightened to the point of being nearly impossible to remove. Out of curiosity, I experimented with a 250 torque wrench. I kept trying to break the tight lug nuts progressively setting the torque wrench to higher settings. Even with the torque wrench set to 250 foot pounds it would click off rather rhan back the nut out. I had to use a breaker bar with a pipe to extend the handle to back the nut out. It felt like half a turn before the nuts came loose. I'm surprised the overtightend lug nuts didn't warp the rotors or break the lug bolt right off. Without a doubt, if I were stuck late at night on a highway, the stock lug wrench wouldn't have been able to remove the lug nuts.

This a great Video in so may ways its step by step, laymans terms and I feel that it comes from the heart , I have subscribed as a result as I am learning from this man. I do however have a few questions (I am not a tech although I have been involved in the industry for 20+ years as a parts advisor) Why no anti seize on the hub face where it contacts the rim? (Why was the hub face shinny in the video? ( ; Why weren't shims or backing plates used with the pads or are they manufactured into the aftermarket pad and if so would multiple plates be higher quality? And the suggestion is to check the Brake Caliper Pistons as soon as possible in case one or both require replacement. This way the parts can be sourced and delivered (where possible) in the the time the brakes are being cleaned up and replaced. This is especially important in this day and age with Supply interruption.
@HouseCallAutoRepair
@HouseCallAutoRepair 2 жыл бұрын
No anti-seize was used.... however I do now use Fluid Film as a rust inhibitor on the hub face. The brake pads have their own single "backing" or built in shim. (nothing around here lasts long enough to matter much) Caliper pistons are inspected visually and by feel during the retracting procedure. Being that the part stores are close, and I'm not tying up a lift, I'm not worried about timeframe. Over the past couple years, I've experimented with a few different processes, and am just starting to see how well each method is holding up, from the vehicles coming back for another set. (I work on a lot of delivery vehicles) In this climate (Salt Belt) unrestricted, long term, pad movement is critical, so emphasis is always on the bracket to pad surfaces. And Thank You for the Subscription!

Do you ever do anything to keep the mounting bolts from corroding tight? We use blue loc-tite on almost everything on Mountain bikes, so we can get them back apart someday. Don't know how it would be with the heat of automotive brakes.

Basically.... anything that coats the threads, works. Sometimes I use blue thread locker. Sometimes I use anti-seize. It kind of depends on how tight the bolt goes, and what it goes into.

Its been 35 years since I last played with brakes I was trying to teach my 15 year old son you helped me a lot to remember and taught me new stuff. Thanks Again. I wonder what the best performing rotors and pads are seems like much disagreement with brakes, but one thing is for sure most rotors are throw away now a days. You are correct. Fluid level SHOULD be carefully monitored throughout this process. Exactly the same. If you ADDED fluid at any point, it may overflow while pushing back the pistons. Replacing fluid that is more than 4 years old is also advised.

What's the point of that hole on the rotor plate you positioned at the bottom. You said it was a star driver.. But I see your weren't turning it.. More up and down.. Is that right? Don't have to use the m8 holes to get the plate off?
@HouseCallAutoRepair

I'm glad you brought this up. I am going to have to do a video on DRUM brakes (similar to most parking brakes) When dealing with a NEW rotor/drum, the adjustment to the shoe spacing can be done for "fitment" of the rotor/drum. However, an extremely worn and properly adjusted brake will develop enough of a lip on the edge of the drum, that might not allow for removal, without BACKING OFF the adjustment. Different designs vary, and some do not even allow for access. Removing a stuck rotor/drum can be very challenging, and those m8 bolts (when available) are intended to assist in the removal.... BUT if the rotor/drum is hanging up on the shoes, not the hub, forcing the rotor/drum will most likely result in component damage. This is NOT a fun situation to get through, and every case is different.... and sometimes you have to choose the lesser of evils.

Best detailed video on doing a brake job I have ever seen. One great idea I picked up was putting anti-seize on the caliper bracket slots where the anti-rattle brackets go. In the past I have had to use a dremel tool to remove the rust from the caliper bracket slots just to get the new anti-rattle brackets to fit. I also appreciated that you worked outside in real world conditions. You proved that even an old geezer like me can learn new things. Take care and have a grrrreat day!!!

Wow, that Rav4 has some "flavor". Going to upgrade my rear brakes as well to Hawk Talon and Hawk HPS pads this week. You forgot the "rubber/silicon" safe grease for the piston boot. At least what the "Toyota" way states in the Rav4World forum. Helped with my previous 2010 Rav4 Base and my current 2018 Rav4 XLE. Great video, though.

A little "painted wheel" brake dust wheel cleaner and a soft bristle brush... lather cleaner with brush. Let sit a few minutes, then using the brush with an agitating motion and a light stream of water, rinse the dust away... apply wax...buff off wax... just like new!

This is an excellent video. Much respect to the mechanic too. I has to be cold there with snow on the ground, and you did the whole job without gloves. You have some tough hands! Question: Do you do the rear brakes at the same interval as the front or do they last longer? I just did my front brakes, but now I'm wondering if the rear need to be done also.
@HouseCallAutoRepair
@HouseCallAutoRepair 2 жыл бұрын
Good question. Generally rear brakes will far out last the front brakes, BUT, there are lots of variables, such as part quality, related component failures, pressure control systems/valves, improper use, improper adjustment, climate, etc. Pull off the real wheel, use an appropriate method of pushing back the pads enough to verify free movement, and examine brake pad thickness. Also take note of any imperfections in the rotor.

This is an excellent video. My daughters brakes need replacing, and she lives 600 miles away, so I can't just run over to help. I thought of flying, because it would still be cheaper than what the shop was going to charge. Anyway, she found this video and is now confident enough to do them herself (with probably a few calls in between). She sent me the video to review it for her, and it is spot on. No fancy tools, just what most of us have in our garage. I'll give an update when she's done.

@HouseCallAutoRepair My daughter did her brakes, and she only had 2 problems, with one of them my fault. I told her to turn the bolts counter-clockwise. She called me "I can't get the bolts off." DOH! The only other problem was getting the drum off because it was frozen. Once I reminded her I gave her a sledgehammer, no trouble! It was smooth sailing from there. Lots of calls and some video calls, and she did it. You made a great video. Thanks.

Great video with good points I didn't know you could jack the RAV4 up on the points you use. You can also use the 2 factory jack points one in front and one on the back. A taller jack height is required however hence your method is good!
@HouseCallAutoRepair
@HouseCallAutoRepair 3 жыл бұрын
I avoid using the body pinch welds as much as possible (factory jacking points) They're generally only good enough for lifting one wheel, high enough to change it. I always go for the strongest points that I can access, (Frame to body mounts, and suspension support points)

@HouseCallAutoRepair

That adjustment wheel is for spreading the parking brake shoes, to take up access movement. Adjust until snug, and then back off to where it just starts to slip freely... (Parking Brake Adjustment)

I do my brake work at a flat rate, for most standard caliper and rotor sets, regardless of what brake parts I'm replacing, while I'm in there. Even if I have to replace a seized caliper... it's the same rate. (to do the job correctly, it all has to come apart anyway).... what's an extra connection and bleeding, anyway...
