When I first saw the sunglasses and wig I thought, "OK, what look is she goin' for here?" But it was a charming interview and she has a great personality. I had a couple of her Cameo Records singles when I was a kid ("Mashed Potatoes" and "Gravy", of course). The arrangements were so cool. Whoever the drummer was on those records and The Orlons hits he was right in the pocket. Dee Dee also did a song called "Baby Cakes" that was a B-side and when I was a kid I thought it should've been a hit as well! Thanks Dee Dee. You're right up there with legends like Mary Wells and Darlene Love as far as I'm concerned.

Song that turned me on to Dee Dee is Breaking and Entering. Enjoyed the interview but would have enjoyed seeing her eyes as she spoke.

when he asked her about the work ethic of her and her generation of performerrs/singers, she almost sounded 'all over the place', because its gotta be extremely difficult trying to articulate what motivated her 70 yrs ago, up against what motvates her to perform with the same love, today. She kept saying "we love what we do". From that, I thought back to her era of black performers, where ALL THEY HAD was a LOVE for what they did...cuz Lord know, NONE OF THEM, were making any money worth talking about. And of course that changed over time, and she and her peers ended up making very nice livings for the most part. but its not even fair to ask her to elaborate on why she feels she and others like her, dont get their due from this generation's singers. Ive heard Stephanie Mills and Patti LaBelle and Smokey Robinson, say the same thing. And all I can say is "that lack of respect for their era is not going to change, because the music industry does not make money on "artistry" and pure singing ability. It makes its money on WHATEVER SELLS. And sometimes that involves vocalists that dont know the first thing about REAL SINGING. They sing on top of a beat and their vocals are often times muted and exaggerated...and thats that. Listen to Dee Dee Sharpe's "Im Happy 'Bout the Whole Thing" album...THATS REAL SINGING.
