Wow, I have a 730d e38 from the year 2000 with 142kw which was originally bought from Brussels and now the new one has 294kw from the same engine lineage, that is awesome! Personally I prefer the exterior of my E38, but the technology in the new one is very impressive.

I only tested the 7 series for 1 day so i can't talk about long term reliability

It is 3 years past, but still.. 50d engine is more expensive to maintain. Both of them will drive 150k without big problems, but there were cases when 40d diesel broke down before 4th oil change at 120k. So, I would not recommend to follow dealers 30k oil changes, but at least 15-20k oil change.
