How is it running now? I love the volt, I had a first generation. It was reliable up until about 120,000 mi and electrical issues made it undrivable, even though it was under warranty dealerships don't know much about these cars. And the Volt technicians are horrible. Fit and finish and paint quality everything was fantastic it looked brand new even almost 10 years old and 140 k. I wish I still had it but it would turn off at freeway speeds

10:52 - not a continuously variable transmission. It is a single speed reduction unit, as is usual for factory production EVs. Very important distinction. Cars like Prius, Altima, etc. have CVTs.

Yeah I don’t think this guy knows what he’s talking about. It’s two planetary gear sets, no CVT. It’s also not “an electric car with a generator”, it’s a series hybrid with 4 driving modes. Also it’s not a 1.5L it’s a 1.4L ICE. He seems to car a lot more about the look, feel, and colors of everything rather than actual substance.

@@looncraz good call on the displacement. I have a Gen 1 and didn't realize they upped it on the Gen 2. As for the definition, GM can call it whatever they want... they obviously failed at marketing such a great car so poorly. It's a series hybrid.

I loved my Volt 2017 LT. Way better then a regular EV, even a tesla. When you run out of electricity you then use gas like a regular car until you can recharge, the importance of that can't be understated. A Tesla can't travel far without charging, if you run out of power it's not like you can go get a can of electricity. The Volt is 60 miles with electricity so 99% of driving its electricity, in the rare case you go over 60 miles then gas kicks in until you recharge. In 30,000 I probably paid $200 in gas. This car is so underrated it's a crime. A lot of torque great tech, high practicality and no gas stations every week.

Doesn't have a CVT transmission, or any transmission. EVs don't have gears usually. It's a single planetary reduction gear from both electric motors (drive motor and generator motor) to the front wheels and can also very rarely be coupled to the engine only when the battery is depleted for better efficiency at higher electric motor RPMs. Also, the batteries are under the center console and rear seats, not the trunk. Finally, the battery is 18.4 kWh, not the motor. The drive motor is 111 KW, the generator motor is 55 KW. BTW - I've seen people get up to 80 miles of electric range, and the tax credits are only available for the first 200,000 electric-only capable vehicles sold by each manufacturer. Just so you know :)

I'm getting a little over 70 mile range all electric with no problem as long as I don't use a lot of AC or heat, but end up running on gas over 50% of the time since I drive long distances. Still getting 48 mpg on gas typically on the highway for an overall average combined of about 80 mpg, which is outstanding.

I know this is a lil old but it came up on autoplay and has the same unfortunate misinformation that a lot of these reviews have. In case someone else stumbles upon it... 1 -- Hold Mode does not "lock out" the battery or any other such thing. It simply runs the gas motor more aggressively to maintain the estimated all-electric miles, when it would run anyway. This allows you to use the gas motor when it's most efficient (like on the highway) and save electric miles for when gas is inefficient (stop & go city driving). Because... 2 -- @16:20 The gas motor does not JUST GENERATE ELECTRICITY. Chevy's been very clear about this from the beginning. At "high speeds" (depends on grading, but typically 35-40mph+), a 2nd clutch will close and connect the gas motor directly to the drive train. At 60mph, in hold/mountain/gas mode, the ICE is the primary driver. At 70mph, they're working in tandem. Moreover, even at low speeds it's not just 'charging the battery' (an absurd claim made in a lot of these videos), but rather the generator powers the electric drive directly. Passing the charge through the battery would absolutely demolish the lifespan of said battery, and would take the MPG from upwards of 45 to a max of 35. First gens have a flux-capacitor inspired look by which you can see the three motors (electric drive, generator, and gas) working. You can see how in 'hold' mode the electric drive will shut off, allowing the ICE to drive the vehicle. At the same time, if via regenerative braking the stored EV miles exceeds the amount you 'held,' the ICE can turn off and the electric drive will come on to maintain speed for a time.

I know this is an old video but the Volt does NOT have a CVT; it is a fixwd reduction gear, not a one speed automatic, just a fixed reduction gear. No reverse gear as electric motors can be designed to operate in clockwise and counterclockwise directions, which means change from foward and reverse the stator's magnetic field changes the rotation direction.

14:03 I know I'm in the minority but I liked how the Volt and the Prius Prime previous to the 2020 model year had 4 seats and the arm rest/center console in the back for the rear seat passengers. I'm not a fan of squeezing a fifth person in so the increased amenities has always looked like a plus. I wish my 2020 Prime had this feature. I am impressed that the Volt had rear heated seats. That is nice.
@firefalcoln
@firefalcoln Жыл бұрын
The comfort package doesn’t give you rear heated seats (only front heated seats and a heated leather steering wheel and a few other leather touch points in the front). You also have to pay extra for the leather seats which aren’t included in the comfort package. I have a base 2016 volt with the comfort pack as the only add on. I bought it used. So I was just happy it wasn’t the base with no add ons. I personally am fine with just the heated seats in the front. It’s more efficient to heat the seats than the air. Especially if it’s just the driver. So if you often drive around when it’s cold, just heating your seat can extend your range over heating the air to stay warm. When it’s hot I typically roll down the front passenger window or press the eco button if I’m trying to preserve the battery.

@mike_t_007 wow, that's impressive. My 2012 I bought it with 87,000 mi. I had the spark plugs done, I had the transmission fluid changed, I used premium, I changed the oil every 5,000 miles with full synthetic. The engine was loud but it never burned any oil, I think the best I saw was 37mpg. On the freeway though 33.1. I loved it, but propulsion power reduced, and the check engine started popping up it was under warranty but the dealer said the battery was fine, I'm pretty sure that it wasn't. I filed several nhtsa complaints because when it would go into limp mode it would do it at Highway speeds, and it was so dangerous.

NOTE you can drive the car in low gear (since there is no transmission) and it is the first stage of the regen braking. The second stage is the paddle on the steering wheel. Also note that A/C, heat, rear defogger, heated seats / steering wheel will cause the battery usage to increase since every thing runs off of the high voltage battery. Heat more then A/C. over all I am very impressed with the Volt. the 2014 and below used premium fuel 2016 - 2017 uses regular fuel

Can someone please tell me how long you can drive the 2016+ volts before the engine is forced on, in order to keep the fluids "refreshed" . For example my commute is 40 miles round trip. If I charge every night I will never deplete the battery. But I'm sure after a period of time the engine must turn on as a preventative maintenance mode or something. Thanks in advance.
@Josiahsutton1
@Josiahsutton1 3 жыл бұрын
I believe it is about every six weeks. When it does run it only lasts a few minutes. You can prevent it by running the engine everyonce in a while while your on your commute. Fuel maintenance mode is about a year. If you only plan to use electric dont keep a full tank of gas because eventually the car will force you to run the engine until you've used it all. Basically just actually use the engine everyonce in a while even if you have battery left. It's good for the engine to run lubricate the engine and circulate all the fluids and clear out the fuel lines so they don't get clogged up.

I do own a 2017, but according to the EPA, it's not a full electric, because the electric engine would have to have a higher range than the gasoline generator. The technicality would be that the electricity always drives the wheels, but the EPA doesn't classify that as a qualifying factor, being that a full gasoline powered car also requires it be run by a battery.

I have this car, my only complaint is the AC and the heater, on really hot days in the summer, some days it doesn’t cool and on really cold days the heater just wouldn’t work. Check engine light comes on randomly and the dealership couldn’t figure it these problems. I have the car on a lease and it going to be up in 4 months. And these problems appeared 7 months into ownership. But other than that the car served me really well, it’s well built and doesn’t feel cheap (I have the base model). I do take this car on curvy roads on mountain and the cars takes the turns like a champ. I personally think those problems are unique to me, because I have friend who leased the car with me and he doesn’t have these two issues. Anyone interested in the car I recommend leasing, because the dealerships when you come to them they work out a nice deal. I got mine for 180 a month with 2k down and I got 4K in rebates.

SIDA, it's designed to be a commuter car. To get the maximum efficiency, it had to be somewhat small. I'm still loving it though. Best damned purchase I've ever made. Fantastic car. I'm 6'3", and it's a pain to get into or out of, just like our '14 Ford Fusion. However, both are fine once I'm in.

+JDLARSON11 Tesla is being plagued with multiple serious quality control issues, and it has a sub-par interior for a car in its price range. Their lower priced model not being available until 2018 will blow the doors wide open for the Chevy Bolt to enjoy run-away sales when it hits the showrooms this summer. But make no mistake about it - the exceptional electric drive system of the Volt, with practical gas backup for the quick fill and go is really the best way to go electric until we get batteries with a 400 mile range and fast re-charge, which we won't see for at least another 5 years. In the interim, the moment GM rolls out a vehicle like my incredible Buick Encore with a Volt drive system - I'll be trading right up to it. Are you listening GM?

Yes, all electric vehicles are cool, and a huge improvement over traditional internal combustion. The Volt is just a really good transition until all electric cars become the norm.

+Isaiah 360 Most of the Navigator's current platform literally dates back almost a decade and a half to 2003. Ford needs to come out with an ENTIRELY new Expedition and Navigator design before they're considered competent again. The Navigator concept that was recently unveiled shows some promise for the future at least.
