2016 Hobie Mirage Outback Overview

Here's a quick video going over some the of the features and items you get with the 2016 Hobie Mirage Outback.
I bought this kayak from The New Anchorage Water Sports Center in Longmont, CO. The staff there is great, the customer service was excellent and they made the buying processes and enjoyable one. Thanks! Those are the two lakes I fish the most with Quincy being the one I'm on more often. I can't say I'll never own a boat, but the only time I'm ever on a boat fishing is usually somewhere out on the ocean. Kayak and bank fishing for me!

nice video. Does your rudder control sticks or feel to tight? Looks like you had to apply more pressure than normal to move it.

The rudder works well for me but it is a little "tighter" when turning right, but not too tight that I feel I have to make any adjustments. In this video, I didn't have the rudder down line pulled all the way, so it was "sticky" in this video.

ok, I had the same problem, the rudder bracket was rubbing the bulkhead that it's mounted to. I sanded the rudder bracket where it contacted the bulkhead, alot smother now.

Great video! How is transporting it? I would have to car top it and worried about the weight.

For me, I have a truck and I transport it in the bed of my truck w/ a bed extender and it's real easy to transport it. I have yet to try and car top it, but I have seen a few people in my area car top the Outback. I've even seen a few car top a Pro Angler!

Can you store a rod in the center hatch?

Not saying it's impossible, but I don't think it's ideal to try and store a rod through the center hatch. On each side of that hatch are the foam blocks to aid in floatation and balance and they would make it difficult to get a rod in there w/out having to take them out or move them around. Hope this helps!

Will that nice seat fit in an 2014 Outback model? Or can it be made to fit?

The seat is not made to fit the 2014 version. There may be a way to retrofit it to the 2014, but I'm not sure how to do that.

Great overview of the Outback, Mr. Baker. My wife and I went to take a look at this one at the local dealer yesterday. Going out for a test spin tomorrow. Is there any way to add additional flotation insurance inside the hull, i.e. more foam blocks or some sort of air bladder? The seat looks a bit different than the one on the Pro Angler Series, but still comfortable. Thanks for the information.

Thanks! I'm not sure how you plan on using your kayak or where, but in most circumstances, I don't think the Outback needs any extra flotation. There is plenty of room inside the hull, so you could put more foam blocks in there if you like. I do know some that take these kayaks offshore have installed an outrigger kit to help provide more flotation and stability. The seat is a little different than the Pro Angler, but still very comfortable. It's not as wide as the Pro Angler, and it doesn't have any arms, other than that I think they are very similar. Have a great time taking these out tomorrow and let me know how it goes!

Okay; will do. We are in Port Angeles, WA where there are rivers and ocean shores everywhere. One day I would love to land 30 lb. salmon. That would be a rush on a kayak.

That sounds great! I'm not sure how much a salmon fights, but anyting 30lbs will probably take you for a short ride!

Hey, Mr. Baker. Well the test spin this morning was a smashing success. My wife had a ball: just being able to sit up higher, steer with a flick of the wrist, and use her large leg muscles made all the difference. She was on the Revolution 13 and was literally 100 yards out into the bay before our guide was even able to get me into my Outback. I can't believe out easy it is to get moving quickly, not to mention it would be ideal for a slow troll for trout on a lake, or just a leisurely cruise along the shore. I think we're sold. We are working out the particulars of transport, storage, etc. but I think we'll be out in the bay next week. Too much fun!

***** That's awesome! Those Revos are fast, but the Outbacks are wider and more stable but both are a lot of fun! I know how exciting it is to get a new Hobie, so I'm excited for you and your wife. Have a great time and let me know when you reel in that 30lb salmon!

How stable is it?

It's very stable, not as stable as some of the wider kayaks like a Hobie Pro Angler Wilderness ATAK, but I can easily stand in it. It was a bit "squirly" the first time I stood up, but once I got used to it, I had no issues fishing and paddling standing up. I was mostly in calm water and I'm not sure I would stand up in much in choppy water.
