2016 Honda Civic Type R Review 1 Year On - Inside Lane

About a year ago we got our hands on the new 2016 Honda Civic Type R hot hatchback to review. Powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharge VTEC engine producing 306bhp and 400Nm of torque, the new Type R will get from 0-62 MPH in 5.7 seconds. Top speed is 168 MPH. The Type R uses Honda's dual axis suspension to counter torque steer. Bespoke Continental tyres provide plenty of grip.
1 year on from the cars launch, and with the introduction of many all wheel drive competitors such as the Focus RS, is the front wheel drive 2016 Honda Civic Type R still in the battle? We explore if the Type R has still got what it takes in this road test.
+R mode turns this car into a real track weapon with 30% stiffer dampers, increased throttle and steering response, as well as new torque mapping. In this mode it can mount a real challenge to the RS in track.

I agree, the type R is a great car. I have driven one and loved it. That said, I'd buy the Focus RS as I have driven that as well and it's incredible. But like you said, variety is indeed the spice of life, and I'd not harp on anyone who put their money down in the type R ... Good job Honda!

I personally love the car looks, it's naughty! Tough decision against the rs but there's something enjoyable about cars that are agile and type r's are well known for that.

Agree with the reviewer - it is a rewarding car to drive. Huge smiles on my test drive and in the dry it just grips and grips - just the over firm suspension that ruined it for me sadly

From your point of view , can you feel the RAW acceleration and all the power coming straight to your face in the FK2 Type-R more as you can feel it in the Focus RS mk3 ???? I know it is more power in the ford but there is more weight on the car too ... ;)

The only problem I see with this car is that the people who can afford it think that the styling is to rice, and those who like the style can't afford it. Talking about USDM here. I understand that all that flash is actually functional, but I still think they could of gone with a little more conservative styling as we are not in the 90's or early 2k's anymore.

Well - amazing engine and a great dry weather car. Nice interior - better than rather claustrophobic RS. Marmite looks ( for me it's too chavved and just plain ugly).But as a one car only all year all weather? No - better off with the Golf or Focus .. and the Golf is just a bit boring.. so Focus it is for me - apart from the fact I can't afford any of them! What about the Seat 280 thing?

I quite like the CTR but to call the FRS Mk3 ugly is a bit hypocritical don't you think? The CTR has Giant grilles that aren't all functional, the unpainted door handles and side sills let it down and as for those chav looking red stripes on the wheels NO Honda just no. That, the annoying beeping from the on board radar on the GT and the bone hard ride on back roads in the UK ruined for me what was otherwise an awesome car. Loved the engine (maybe not exhaust note).

some things you said are right and I agree, but you must agree the MK3 RS has a couple of problems as well. 1600kg is the main one Also not so race car feel driving it or race car cockpit as the FK2 It's like they tuned up regular focus and added 300kgs 4x4 200hp and some better suspension thats it. Where the CTR is built to be a race car for the road. I own one, and trust me I had 3 fords and this is my first Honda and I was big Ford fan and owner, so yes - the CTR is like nothing else. Yes the outlook is not for everyone, but it's much much more special than the RS. Also in my country (and many others) the RS is more expensive and has much less extras included in the package and when you choose the extras which the CTR GT has, in my country (and many others) the RS is more then 5000EUR more expensive than the GT which is insane. Also uses more fuel than the 2.0 vtec turbo. Has 280L boot where I have 500! I have full automatic low and high beams where the low beams are LED, the RS has praistoric Xenons. Also the RS has worse leg room in the back and no magic seats folding the back seats up (on the CTR) and no flat floor when fold them down. Also 1350kg against 1600kg I'm sorry, but no.

Also stock is 235 35 19 just fit 245 or 255 on the CTR and the ride gets better. If I wanted comfort I would buy CR-V or Ford EDGE, if you see where I'm going. Best regards.
