2016 Lexus GX 460 4WD Review

I just got this vehicle after a lot of research. I wanted one vehicle to replace both my car and truck that I used for off road. The Lexus GX is called the Land Cruiser Prado in Africa and Australia and has a good rep there. Yes, it has a different grill, the spare tire is mounted differently, and the interior is fancier. The biggest difference is the engines which are different, the Lexus having a way more powerful engine. I have no idea why. Do you know that at 301 hp it has a more powerful engine than a 1980s Ferrari 308? The 0-60 time is about the same too depending on which year Ferrari. The horsepower craze has gotten out of hand when an SUV has more hp than a super car of the 80s. Well it gets up hills for sure! Last weekend we took it out to the Cascades and did some off roading. We were all impressed. The A-Track or "virtual lockers" seem to work. The Crawl Control, something we all thought was some gimmick turned out to work well. In fact one guy who would not use it the first day ended up using it all the time the second day calling it off road cruise control. Mine is the Luxury model so all these things came with it whether I wanted them or not. I could have done without the heated steering wheel and fancy stereo but they were part of the package. I do like the backup camera, parking assist, and blind spot monitors, all for city use. There are many other things that I am still learning about. Lots of buttons! The things I don't like about it is the third row seat which is useless for me. I wish that were an option that one could do without. The other thing are the tires it came with. I got rid of those and replaced them with B. F. Goodrich AT KO2 tire which I have had before and trust. I almost went with Goodyear Wrangler which many people think are better but I bought something I knew. The quality is superb. Make no mistake, with decent tires this is one hell of an off road vehicle. Don't laugh at the Crawl Control until you give it a fair test. It's noisy but works. Noisy is an understatement. It sounds like the vehicle is falling apart! On the pavement the GX is OK. Not a sports car but certainly better than my old F-150. It is better off road than the old Ford too although I had no real complaints about the old truck it having an Auburn rear locker. Maybe one option Lexus could add is rear locker even thought the A-Trac works well. Lockers vs A-Trac is a never ending argument on off road forums. I asked the salesman about it and he said he was certain that 99% of the GXs never go off road. I find that a shame. Why buy it then? There are better vehicles to use on the pavement and you are paying for features you'll never use. I think this is a great vehicle to get if you want a luxury vehicle that is dependable and can really work off road and does well enough on pavement. If you are not going off road or towing, there are better unibody vehicles for pavement only use. Body-on-frame vehicles like the GX shine off road.

Only thing I dislike about the GX is the rear.

Great videos, i m honest right here, but I really want to see the tech package, curious about that 5 spoke alloy rims. Please do a review of that, so then we will have base, tech and exec all together !

is this realy the base model i bought the premium version and it the same features what are the differences between the versions

For the 2016 Lexus GX 460 Canadian models we received the Standard Equipment, Technology and the Executive Packages. I don't know which one your premium package is so I can't tell you the differences.The differences between the 2016 packages is the Technology Package includes the Standard equipment plus 18" 6-spoke alloy wheels, Lane Departure Alert, Wide-View Front & Side Monitor System, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Pre Collision System. The Executive Package includes the Technology package plus Crawl control, transmission cooler, 18" unique alloy wheel finish, front console cool box, multi-terrain select and the dual screen rear sear DVD entertainment system. Can't believe how "old" the technology and design are for a 2016 Lexus?!! Is this SUV really as aged as it looks?
