The designers are quite proud of all the various little details they put into the car, and I've gotta say good effort on that. Though there's another part of me that thinks, may be that's just to plaster over the car's less than flattering proportions. Most car buyers in this price range and segment probably won't even know what a torsion bar set-up is ! haha But to the few who do, and appreciate the perks of an independent set-up, your review speaks volumes ! P.S. I wasn't aware that you bought a new Persona ! And you're a model dad ! The rear-facing child seat, willingness to buy a Persona over a Bezza/ Almera/ for its 6 airbags and ESC, assessing tyre performance in the wet etc.. All of this speaks volumes. Have been driving Persona CVT Standard for 3 months. From my manual calculation, my fuel consumption is around 13 km/L for 80% highway drive in average. The trip computer is indeed too optimistic, showing 6.4 L/100 km while it should be 7.7 L/100 km. I use RON 95...

James Woon different case for me though. My Preve IAFM (which also has the average F.C., and probably a similar calibration) is pretty on point (usually +0.5 l/100km) But wow the F.C. of the new persona is kinda bad, not far off from a bigger preve (non turbo version of course) My manual preve averages 8 l/100km (12.5 km/l) for 50:50 driving and 6.1 l/100km (16.4 km/l) for 80:20 driving I guess Protons CVTs are still not as efficient as a manual transmission

Cornelius Toh haha.. have you tested the car? It's not bad in isolation, but yeah, not something you'd want to trade up from a Waja. The Waja, despite not having ESC, is still more surefooted in extreme maneuvers. The only things from the Persona I'd wish I had in the Waja are keyless entry, reverse cam, and the extra safety features.

Kon Wai Luen yes I had tested the car and the car's driver seating position isn't as sporty as the Waja, so it doesn't feel confident at corners like the Waja. Haha I believe keyless entry system can be retrofitted at accessory shops

Not a Waja owner here but Persona SV. Same chassis with Waja tho so I can tell the fun. In fact, your article is the deciding factor for me when I was getting my last batch Persona SV back in 2014, Kon. You wrote a review of a blue Persona SV on Autoworld. I read that and fell in love on how you describe the SV's ride and handling despite it was a 10 years old platform. Was contemplating between a Myvi 1.5SE, Saga FLX 1.6SE and Persona SV. And the all independent suspension system won my heart. And yes, I am very satisfied despite negative feedback from various angles. Paid only 48k for a car that can keep up with cars twice or thrice more expensive. Thanks for your article, Kon.

Previously on 95, but have switched to 97 recently because of knocking. Car is in workshop now getting ECU updates, so will switch back to 95 after this and experiment.

@monkimajik the 2015 car looks better and is nicer to drive, but is based on an old platform. The 2016 Persona is actually smaller, but it does have much better rear seats. If budget is a concern, go for the older model. BTW, may I ask what do you work as?

So happened there were 2 of the same case (including mine) that day. Never had the problem with my 10 y/o Swift... Im sure Im not the only one. Hope Proton will take note on this..

Hi Kon, I also bought Persona Premium Red 2 month ago. Yay! Same like u haha! I have a few questions: 1. Do u experience the leather seat are quite hard? I feel that and my body tired when driving it for more than an hour. Its actually not me but all passengers feel the same. Is it because the leather still new? Coz I also own an Axia Advance. Although the seat and the feels are not the best, but at least I'm not feel tired driving it for a long time. 2. Persona use 185/55 tyres. Is it ok if I want to change it to 195/55 with standard rim provided?? Are there any chance it will hit the fender if fully loaded?

1. So far, no complaints on that front. New leather shouldn't be the cause of fatigue. Have you tried adjusting the seat angles? 2. I don't see a problem going to 195/55, but you never know. Do share your experience if you go through with it. May I ask why the thought of upsizing?

I have a question. I do not own a car but have driven a few of my family members'. It's time for me to get one, a budget tight one but avoiding Axia and Saga. I was looking into 2018 1.3MT Myvi, 1.3MT Iriz, and 1.6MT persona which comes with almost the same price. So far I think Proton has more power and superior handling so I will probably put away the Myvi, notice that I only look at the Manual variant. May I know what do you think about Iriz and Persona? Maybe a general comparison? Thank you.

Agreed with mentioned tyre size, my brother own one and I always looked at it as a Weiner dog. Also, the design of the door windows at the front is really weird. The quality is always Proton Quality (hated those Proton bashers always comparing Proton with Ferrari) but this persona is quite comfortable. Performance wise for kakiracing, its lack of rear multilink suspension, all around disc brakes and engine swap(hehe, 06 Persona can shove in an 4g63t) will be miserable to be done.

Great review! I booked an iriz 1.3 mt, but according to SA there is no stocks and may be stop for this year. Been waiting for almost a month but no news. Then I was about to change to persona manual. Unfortunately, the HQ sent memo to all sales person to refrain taking booking for manual variant as they are going to stop the production for manual. Im skeptical to take cvt as there were few issues with cvt in iriz including koyak in a year but so far never heard any issues with persona cvt. I am trying to convince myself taking persona cvt and my budget i would go for standard variant. My concern are how well the cvt in persona for city drive and noise for hway cruising at 110kmph, and how bad is the FC for 100% city driving considering many traffic lights and not much hways (it is melaka, everybody knows that) maybe similar to penang island traffic condition. I hv been watching your videos all over again since the past 2 months just to convince myself on iriz and persona. 😅

I understand that for all its refinement issues, the Punch CVT is actually pretty robust. 100% city driving, you'll get about 9.5 - 10.0 l/100km. Semi-syn lubrication increases it a little, so I'll be going back to fully syn for my next service.

Honda City and Toyota Vios offer better features, but for superior driving dynamics, you need to look at the likes of the Honda Civic, Mazda3, or Ford Focus.

Agreed, the Preve has a great chassis, but the car was launched before it was properly refined. Proton had, in fact, developed a 6MT version of the CFE Turbo model, quite sadly, that never came to fruition.

Not to a consumer, but in the context of a given nameplate, the general expectation is that the new product should always supersede its predecessor. Example, it's perfectly okay to trade in your 2015 Honda Civic for a 2018 Honda City for the purpose of downsizing or cutting costs, but you'd typically expect the 2018 Civic to definitely step up from the 2015 version.

Interesting choices. Vento drivers better. Persona offers better service coverage and does not have major reliability issues, although it has minor quality niggles. Persona's safety spec is higher too. If resale value is a concern, you should lose less on the Vento, since it is already a used car.

Kon Wai Luen RV is not a concern to me but reliability and performance are. But reliability of the Vento can't be that bad. Plus, if I'm not mistaken, the service interval is 15000 km or 1 year which really interest me to Vento. Then again, I do feel that Persona is a reliable car since the technology used is already matured....

Hi Kon, thank you for your honest and super detail review in terms of the technicality and practicality as well. Just curious about the level of refinement between this new Persona, the new Myvi, refinement version of Iriz and Saga, in your opinion, which one has better level of NVH? And I have read also somewhere that the suspension tuning for this Persona is a bit more in the softer side compared to its own brother Iriz as well as to the new Myvi, and thus making the ride a bit bumpy. But I don't really care as i do understand that Persona is developed as a family car. So, here I would like to compare it to the new Saga, as I heard as well that the new Saga has better setup. So what do you think? Which one has better suspension tuning, Persona or Saga? Last but not least, the plastic used inside this car e.g for the dashboard, door trims etc, which one has better quality, the new Persona/Iriz or the new Myvi. I think that's it for now, I guess. The Saga has a more comfort-oriented bias than the Persona, and is even quieter on the move. Iriz gives you the best handling among the options you mentioned. Persona is the next best thing, because the platform was designed initially as a hatchback and the Persona's added boot does alter the chassis balance from the original design. Also, I find the Persona's torsion beam really makes its presence felt when going over bumps. Interior plastics, I think Perodua's quality is better, but Persona isn't bad. I am facing some minor rattles from the dashboard, but outwardly, the assembly still feels solid enough. Everything is still working inside the car and nothing has fallen off. Anyways, go test drive all the cars you're considering before making a decision. :)

Not sure of the CPS engine as my Waja is Campro. Watch out for suspension wear. The bushes are built into the arms, so when the bushes koyak, you'll to change the arms together, and the Waja has a lot of suspension arms. Keep your eyes on the tail lights for leaks too. Assuming your car is still using the original tail lights, the brake light socket is liable to melt due to heat from the bulb, letting water into the tail light casing. I swapped mine back to the older model's tail lights, but Proton no longer sells those original (have to buy used) and you need to cut the car's wiring.

Great job on the video Kin! I'm entering my 11th month of owning the persona premium and yes I agree with you that this is a decent enough car to drive on a day to day basis with its price tag. No complaints (other than some rattling noise which is inevitable on most B seg cars). On the fuel consumption part, I'm achieving an average of 430 per tank (each refuel will take in around 32 litres) which to me the mileage is beyond what I have expected. I'm no light footer btw, but maybe it's because driving style of 60% highway 40%town drive. Any other owner has better mileage?

That is very good mileage! The Persona's tank is 40 litres, so getting up to 430 km between refills is excellent.

I like your explanation on rear suspension. Yes, torsion beam if compared side to side with multi link, you can feel the difference subjectively, but that does not mean it is bad. I’m having problem with my persona air conditioner. It makes unpleasant sound when i turn on the air cond. it sounds like a fan blade spinning against something. Always last 1 or 2 seconds only from time to time, not always. I cant convince the service centre that something is wrong with the aircond. And sometimes it makes weird masam smell on the first blow when you turn on the air cond. really don’t know how to fix this

My wife complained to me about the low-speed jerkiness at traffic jams, but we've just gotten used to it. Remember you shouldn't creep this car forward like you would in a torque converter auto, either fully stop or fully release the brakes and let the clutch engage fully without slipping.

However, transmission wise the Getrag-sourced stick persona is much more refine than the jerk CVT imo. Transmission reaction wise, never ever hope a comfort, fuel saving TCU to react like the VW DSGs hahahaha. At the end of the day, if you can drive a stick, go for it. I am in Cheras area and got used to the traffic in a stick. Engine wise, it's an improvement from the previous gens, however, still losses refinement as Kon stated. :D Cheers!! p/s: If you need a spirited drive, go for iriz man, Persona stock rear suspension is bit too soft, hahaha.

Kah Heng Kah Heng so far, the best i've experienced is the Dunlop Formula D01 and Michelin PS3. Both these tyres are out of production, but worth checking their successors out.

I am fresh grad, i have affection for proton, mainly because of my patriotism n loyalty to one brand. Previously, i inherit family car (iswara 1.5 manual) that pass from my father then my two elder brothers. That car is dope, super fun to use, but sadly the car had problem, my family decided not to repair it anymore, insist on me on buying new car. They suggest me bezza, no way i will buy hideous looking car, then friend of mine convince to buy myvi. I gotta to admit, i am impressed with the new myvi feature and the design. I am no perodua hater, but yesterday first accident involving new myvi, the driver dead (may his soul rest in peace), the car safety features does not impress me unlike the hpd that proton use in iriz/persona. But fc for myvi based on most owner i read is pretty impressive, i have thought on become part time uber/grab driver. Persona vvt based on your review is average. I just dont know, i really want proton car, especially persona vvt, but i am afraid if got defect car like some of the owner. Which one suit me? The Persona does not have serious reliability issues, just minor niggling faults which do not impact on your day-to-day usage of the car. If you prefer an Iriz/Persona, go for it. At the end of the day, the question is, what qualities do you prioritize and what do you prefer?

The only rattling sound that I am hearing thus far can be accounted for by my phone holder. The cabin otherwise feels solid. Overall sound levels of the car is lower than past Proton models, but at highway speeds, the engine-CVT combo still drones a little.

Ermm.. for starters, I can tell you the Persona feels more solidly built than the 2015 Iriz. Against the Vios and City, Persona is on par with fit and finish as well as materials, switchgear quality is not fully there yet lah.

Between these three, the Persona, no question. Its proportions admittedly awkward, but dynamics-wise, it drives more assuredly than the Bezza and is also more refined at high-speed. The Saga offers similar qualities to the Persona and is more handsomely styled, but the package feels a little aged. The Bezza, well, it offers low running costs and is worth considering if you're really looking for nothing more than a straight forward A-to-B transport.

Kamarolzakwan Kamaruddin depends on what you're looking for. Bezza is no frills motoring - suitable if you are doing ride sharing services. Persona is a better drive, but at RM50k, Persona has less features than Bezza la.

The new Persona has more modern features such as keyless entry, reverse camera, ESC, and ISOFIX. It also better rolling refinement than the Waja and is more fuel efficient. Waja still handles better, however, and feels more confident at highway speeds. These days, when I'm going out with the family, I usually take the Persona; but if I need to get anywhere in a hurry, it is the Waja I still count upon.
