2016 Triumph Thruxton Review

Having low expectations exceeded is always preferable to high expectations not being met. With all the hype surrounding Triumph’s Bonneville Thruxton reboot, I attended the press launch under the premise of the Thruxton being a stylized Bonneville racer lacking the performance for which it’s namesake implies. How surprised was I to discover that a traction-control system was the only thing keeping the fuel tank from smacking me in the chest when grabbing a fistful of throttle for the first time.

Really appreciate this in depth review. One main reason is some people (who should know better) actually claim that the standard model has a different engine set up than the R. I was told that the 1200 HP is only for the R which is clearly incorrect based on this review and directly from the Triumph Spec on their website. Those people will see in a few weeks that it's not the 1200 HT Bonnie engine but the Thruxton HP across all models with all 3 modes and the difference being the suspension/ brakes/ tires for the R. As the rider, the question will be is that $2k difference worth it to you.

I really wanna like the fairing, but I think it looks much better without it.

I love that fairing. If I had one of these bikes I would definitely have that fairing fitted.

I've noticed that every fairing looks super ugly compared to "naked." However, I noticed that a square fairing with a round headlight, is the best look. A round fairing, with a round headlight, looks too old, and more like a 1960's bike. A slightly squared off fairing, with a round headlight, seems to look much, much better. Although I'm not sure why. Similar to how a square gas tank looks beautiful compared to the morbid tapered "tear drop" shaped tanks that are on the loathsome cruisers and 1980's UJM Japanese bikes. The "angle" and shape of parts will make or break the appearance. Some fairings look too soft and bulbous, and ruin the "cafe racer" vibe.

I got one of this. Thruxton R with fairing and the handle bar was tune as sport bike mode. The handling is very good and just like riding a sports bike.

Yo, Tom. Have you been juicing? You're looking buff, Bro. Looks good. Nice review. I hope Triumph upgrades the speed triple and gives it about 1200cc.

So nice to see beautiful but functional motorcycles on the road again. I've never seen so many ugly motorcycles as in the last decade with 'transformers' styling or the 'hyper-motard' and 'adventure' styles. The sport-bikes with fairings all look basically the same which is boring to look at even though they are lightening fast. The naked sport-bikes look better IMO. Harley discovered their 'retro' styling heritage and they now sell in huge volumes, and I think Triumph is going to do the same with their new Bonneville line. Chasing huge hp numbers is not the selling advantage it used to be and riders are more interested in a strong torque curve, easy handling, cool looks, and reasonable comfort; let's face it when your motorcycle license is gone so is your car driver's license!

Yeah, but I don't see how having both classical bikes and adventure/hypermotard dedigns on the market is a bad thing. I mean, if you want to spend 14k on a classic fat ass bike you are welcome. For that price I would buy something way better in performance. Ugly, maybe, but I'd get what I paid for
@gwwayner
@gwwayner 8 жыл бұрын
Mattebodra I've been riding motorcycles since 1967, and IMO a cool looking motorcycle is half the consideration before buying for street riding. Hypermotard/Adventure bikes are just plain ungainly, overweight, ugly, and I would never consider one. If I wanted to go off-road/street I would purchase a light single-cylinder Enduro with proper long suspension travel for that purpose. Anyway, I would never ride an ugly motorcycle on the street. Triumph is going to sell all they can make of the new Bonneville line. Really, 50-100 hp is all you need for riding on public roads and you can still quickly lose your license with that much power.

+gwwayner I'm riding a TT 600 ad first bike, so I get you point of view:) Just consider that for a better money you get yamahas, xjr and xsr series. Cool looking, reliable, cheaper! Not trying to compete with you in experience tho:)

Would this be a feasible first bike? Please don't murder me I was going to get the last gen thruxton but this one came out and looks way better and it will be the one in the dealerships
@crazyassgenius
@crazyassgenius 9 жыл бұрын
+Alex Tran I would stay away from anything that can power wheelie or that actually needs the traction control (which includes this bike) for your first. Not that you need to get a 250, the last gen Thruxton (you can probably get a great deal on one now), an FZ-07, or anything in that range is good.

+Tim N is this bike comparable to a 600 sport bike? Im asking out of pure curiosity because I can't find the answer anywhere. I'm definitely gonna go with your advice on a last gen thruxton but this bike will definitely be in my near future.
@crazyassgenius
@crazyassgenius 9 жыл бұрын
+Alex Tran It might post similar track times, but completely different experience. Most of the power on a 600 is above 10k rpms and redline is 14k, whereas this hits you with big torque at 3k and redlines at 8k. For street riding I prefer torquey nakeds b/c it feels faster at legal(ish) speeds

+Tim N I am with you, I had a 2013 Thruxton as my first bike, won't stand up but plenty of power to grow into. And he is right about great deals, I sold mine recently as have others who are upgrading so there is a large used market right now, not to mention the dealers are trying to dump the remaining old models they have sitting on the floor along with the Triumph promos. And hey it will look a lot like this one and trust me will get a ton of attention.

How are the engine vibes? How tall is the 6th gear? Does it have the right gear ratios? The only bike so far with the right gear ratios is the Royal Enfield GT650, which I'm considering buying, just because they put a real overdrive 6th gear. I have no idea why no motorcycle from the major companies has a proper overdrive. This is completely unacceptable, and it cannot be justified, no matter what the reason is. The 1932 Henderson motorcycle had a beautiful overdrive, and was a better motorcycle than most of today's bikes with their improper race gear ratios without overdrive.

I do get the idea; an homage to the old style bikes of the 60's, but if the industry is trying desperately to ring in new, younger, riders....they should really start coming up with newer designs that will captivate a new generation of riders. It's a beautiful bike, but I feel like the industry is constantly looking backwards rather than forwards these days
