Learn how to change your own oil and filter. Beware! The drain plug seems to be cheap and disposable. Most likely the plastic tabs on it will break!
Dealer costs vary from $3.99 - $6. If you take it to a quick lube place they may try to upsell you one for $10 or more!- if it actually breaks while removing (or not).
Needed:

Mobil 1 120764 Synthetic Motor Oil 5W-30, 5 Quart www.amazon.com/dp/B00I4E91GI/...

Motorcraft FL500S Oil Filter www.amazon.com/dp/B001KR1BQE/...
Oil filter removal adapter/wrench (easy to access.)

I've done many of oil changes with the plastic drain plugs ever since they started using them on the 6.7 Powerstroke. Never damaged or broke ONE of them. I also never used a screwdriver to turn it either. It broke because of you, not the design. You only have yourself to blame for that one.

hdz12ez you may have a “point”.... Tried twisting it several times, didnt come off. Then used the driver gently to try to get the tab to slide over, As it has worked for others. Will try again next time w/ different method. Good to know they can come off w/o busting. 👏 Edit:Picked up 2 today for spares, and the tech said they usually break and they were only 5$ for 2 of them.

hds12ez I thought the same thing at first but on closer inspection of pan and plug they have a different design on these brand new ones. The old ones dont have a tab to stop it from loosening.

If a Ford dealership would do the oil change, and break that plug they would just put it back and don't tell you about it, just like they never put skid plates screws back , or even the skid plate for that matter.

Thanks for the video. Here are some helpful tips: 1. Don't use a tool to try to release the tabs on the drain plug. Just turn it. Use your hands (or use pliers to turn it if you're not strong enough). 2. The oil that spills from the filter runs down a hidden ramp and drains out of the square hole in the rearward engine (galvanized metal) skid plate. The plastic ramp shown in this video must be for different engines.

Joe was the first time doing it, didn’t want to destroy it:) Coming up on the second oil change so this time I’m just going to twist that sucker. Plan on using the needle nose pliers twist method... The plastic piece is the rundown on this Raptor tho, thanks for the input

At work we remove all the shields just to make sure that there’s no drippage that could cause the customer to come back and think they have an oil leak because there’s no way you can clean everything up with all the under shields on

The drain plug is supposed to be replaced with each oil change. They sell for $3+ at ford dealers __ they cost Ford 36 cent to make. Ford Motor Co. and the dealers are making close to $3.00 for each one they sell. It provides Ford with a steady source of additional income Compared to old oil pans with a metal bolt..

It's "recommended" but not required. I work at an Express oil change and there are fleet vehicle F150s that have never had the plug replaced. They still don't leak.

Thanks for the video...gonna change the oil myself this time, loathe to have anyone else touch my vehicle and while the dealer hasn't screwed it up thus far, don't want to give them another chance. Is the filter cap tool a one-size fits all, or specific to the filter? I saw one guy on FRF run his engine to drain the oil, do you recommend that?
@JLeeChron
@JLeeChron 5 жыл бұрын
T4nkc0mm4nd3r never run your engine to drain the oil...Thats one of the most foolish things I’ve ever heard!. 😂 ...run for 5 minutes or so to warm up oil to flow well, and circulate any particles to drain. Shut engine off, then proceed to the change. You can get a size specific oil filter wrench, or, get an adjustable one, they are usually sized small or large and generally you want the small. Ford filter is an FL500S. While in store, just size it Thanks

I'll take my chances with changing my own oil than them hollering that than them putting recycle used oil in my vehicle. because when you go to any of these places that changes oil whether it's a dealership or whatever most of them use one grade of all whether it's 0-30 or 5: 30 or 5: 20 not every car calls for that particular 1 grade keep in stock because usually it comes out of a 50 gallon barrel. I want pure synthetic in my car and I'm not talking about no damn cheap Pennzoil either

The only difference between high mileage & non high mileage oil is, that high mileage oil has additives that swells the older gaskets in the old engines and ensure that they are still doing their job.
