I just got this etude to work on and its a bit scary! im only 4 years on french horn but I got into my universities music program to study music education I also have been invited to audition for HPS to perform at Carnegie Hall and this is the etude they require for the audition. I will try my best to play it and audition but I won't be mad if I don't make the cut though I would love to perform there haha

Hi Mr. Houghton, I'm a high school french horn player planning to audition to Julliard soon and I am not quite sure how to mic a french horn. Could you tell me which microphone you use to record and where you place it? Thanks a lot.

Any pointer on how to strengthen a lip trill? I have been working on a lip trill for about 3 years, but I haven't gotten any better.
@mitchelljoy14447 жыл бұрын
Karlye Ramos I need help on those too 😂😂for this etude I just start doing quarter note slurs from c to d then slowly speed it up and just do that every time you practice and you should be good
@karlyeramos85577 жыл бұрын
Mr crippled Thank you! Literally I had a solo for solo and ensemble the past to years to help me, and they didn't help. I'll try that though!😊
@Josh-st9sn7 жыл бұрын
I would suggest slurring slowly first, like in half notes, then quarters, then eights, and so on. doing this consecutively will help you. lip trills are the hardest to learn and worst to practice in my opinion but i only have 5 years experience.
@starwarsjunkie77766 жыл бұрын
You'll need to work on pitch bends. Think about it, a lip trill is playing two notes as effortlessly as one note, so practice getting two notes as physically close as possible.
@spamaccount15134 жыл бұрын
Only 2 years late, but start with larger inteverals (trigger f to c) and then as you get better at thise slowy close the gap, getting faster until you have a solid major 2nd lip trill

This is amazing honestly I tried my best and I couldnt get that close to tempo

i could never hit the low pedal notes, any tips to practice?
@worldblazin42095 жыл бұрын
You;re a little too late for a music pro to see this question and respond, but I might have you covered. As a trombonist, I've heard that you should play your highest note possible and slur down to your lowest with the mouthpiece and instrument to better help your range. If you do the opposite, and hold a good articulation, you should build the muscles for pedal-tone playing. There will be resistance, and you'll want to loosen your embouchure, but you can't! This slurring up and down should be a good technical study for you whenever you are warming-up for pieces, and just "5 minutes a day " will drastically help.

@@worldblazin4209 thank you so much! i will definitely try it out!

Can you find this in the "335 Selected Melodious Progressive and Technical Studies for French Horn" book? Because that was there the etudes were from last year and I can't seem to find them.

Do you have any advice for a two year French horn player?
@chefpablo20007 жыл бұрын
Play in the marching band, but for the mellophone, use the mellophone mouthpiece. Drop your jaw, open your throat, and play through the note. Air is everything, use minimal pressure, and practice keeping a piece of paper against the wall using a straw to push the paper against the wall. Breathe through your nose to keep the paper held up for ten minutes. You will learn "circular breathing". When you revert back to playing your French Horn, choose a mouth piece with a broad rim and deep cup. This will help you with your low tones, which will also help you reach a better broad quality with your high tones, but it will take practice with "long tones". The Holton Farkas mouthpiece was too sharp for my lips early on, as I used too much pressure. Try a Conn mouthpiece at first. Google Arnold Jacobs tuba with the Chicago Symphony as well as Dale Clevinger, former principal horn of the Chicago Symphony. Breathe and play through the phrase. The second year that I made Texas All-State, Orchestra, I was using a Giardinelli mouthpiece with a teflon rim. Get at least a Holton Farkas double horn. If your school gave you a Conn 8D, it will just blow back at you. Much luck my apprentice.
