I also have a 2012 TSX:
• 2012 Acura TSX oil change
Things you'll need:
•0w-20 oil (synthetic recommended)
•Oil filter - equivalent parts include M1-110A (used in video) and SX7317XL. There are others too. More info at • My oil filter wrench
•17mm socket wrench
•oil filter wrench or strap wrench
•Funnel (long-necked one)
•oil pan
•shop towels or paper towels
•car ramps or a car jack with jack stands
Optional:
•a new crush washer for the drain bolt. Otherwise, re-use the old one
•automotive creeper

They put the oil filter there because the engine was designed long before the vehicle was. The J35 engine goes back to the 1990s. Also, no need to remove the plastic cover, the oil fill opening is easily accessible (with a long funnel) and I don’t think contaminated motor oil is good for rubber. Anyway, it will just attract and hold more dirt.

I use a big strip of foil over the frame to drain it into the pan when changing the filter. It's a bit finnicky but pays off if the mess bothers you

Hi, i put a paper plate, under the oil filter, over the steal cross member, never a mess!! good luck. Ridiculous engineering!!

I wrap filter with 1 gal ziplock catches 95%.

I put aluminum foil over the frame to direct oil from the filter to the pan. less messy...saw another guy do it on youtube.

That's a good work-around. Still could have been better designed though. I think the previous model has this flaw as well.

It's annoying how resetting each car's oil maintenance reminder is different card, even within the same brand! My TSX is slightly different and it takes a min to figure it out.

Just changed the oil in my 2017 RDX and this day and age the lack of engineering to make the change clean and unmessy is very annoying. I figure they intend to make it messy so most people will take to a stealership.

You want your engine warm so it takes out sludge and crap doesn't settle. Wear gloves not to get burned...Old rule of thumb, 1/4 turn past hand tight.

Nice video tutorial. I have a 2018 Q5 and am considering maybe getting a 2017 or 2018 RDX. Is it a reliable car? Is it fun to drive?

We have over 100k miles and no reliability issues. Can't say that it's fun it not. We don't drive it very hard, and its a very basic package (no technology package, FWD only). We replaced brake pads and rotors after about 80k miles if that tells you anything.

Hi Timmy! Good question! Affiliate link: amzn.to/39KtAUk I bought mine from AutoZone like 7-10 years ago. There's no branding on it, so I don't know if this exact one is still made. The Amazon link above is the closest thing I could find. It's a 64mm (inner diameter) wrench with 14 flutes. I'll have a separate video soon that gives a closer look at what I have. Before committing to your next oil change, test to make sure your wrench for your old and new replacement oil filter!

It takes me about 20 minutes I'd say, less than 30 minutes for sure. If you're figuring things out for the first time, budget an hour so that you can get comfortable with whatever equipment you have on hand (i.e floor jack + Jack stands versus the rhino ramps I used) and for learning your specific vehicle.

Great video!!! 1) is there a crush washer for the drain bolt that needs to be replaced? 2) what are the torque specs for the filter and drain bolt, couple videos refer to “hand tighten” only.

1) There is a crush washer, but I usually reuse the same one. Yes I know, it's recommended to replace with a new one each time. I've only started replacing these as of this year. I'm not saying that it's good practice to reuse the old crush washer. But I will note that I haven't experienced any issues with reusing the same old crush washer for several years at a time. 2) Sorry, I don't know the torque specs for the filter or the drain bolt, or anything for that matter. Again, not recommending that you "wing it" like me and many others do, but I have not had any ill effects... That I know of. Oil filter and drain bolt tightened just beyond hand tight seems to be fine in my case for both cars. Also, if you ever replace your spark plugs, I think I've done a quarter turn after it feels "hand tight" on the socket wrench, with no noticeable ill effects. Again, not a recommendation, but sharing my experience.

@@capitalexotics The manual doesn't really say (anymore). Acura seems to think we need to depend on their electronic maintenance reminder that's built into the car. Based on previous models, the recommendation was 105k. People from other sources (like blogs) seem to agree with this for these newer models. Now that I think of it, I think I still need to replace the sparks on the rdx. I've done my other car, but not this one
