2017 Boom Operator Masterclass Intro

In August 2017 I taught a class on booming at the Local 80 Soundstage in Burbank. We had about 100 students, thanks to the amazing efforts of Chris Howland, the moderator of LA Mixers Facebook page, and the support of K-Tek. This is my introduction to the class. It was my first time teaching booming, and I worked all night to finish the notes, so I look a bit tired and sweaty, but I was so excited to share my knowledge, I hope that comes through.

Is there like a spine or just muscle doctor boom ops see in LA or NYC... I injured myself in NYC and found a spine doctor who was written in like Time as the best in NYC and he seemed to have worked with local 52 boom ops but I had nobody to ask to verify about it, claimed there was a surgery but generally costs 100k, I never did it, went back to nor cal to find I should take care of my mother and fixed my spine, doing PT, to where I can walk and transfer from bed and chairs normally but I'm pretty sure I can never boom op again, been about over 7 years since my injuries, I worked on like Frances Ha and shit in NYC; could get work from like script to screen in LA and like Ogilvy Mather in NYC when I was in NYC and never joined the union, but passed the written and oral exam in 2009; I got like nothing going on in my life and figured I'd probably have to do more non union feature film work to get back in but figured maybe there is a miracle worker who's gotten boom ops working again... I practice for 5 minutes and the pain level and muscle spasms that result from it make it see impossible to me that I ever boom operated in the past, I have hella audio to prove I was good once though, non-union with no deal memos made it like so I own the recordings and keep it as proof I did have a career and was good... it's all on encrypted hard drives that are offline and don't connect to the internet so everyone's privacy is still safe... I got like swatted by a non union director I went to school with and almost had my hard drives confiscated though... fucking local police are assholes, especially when you live in a corrupt town like I do... anyways, yeah, who is the boom operator doctor in LA? I will go down and pay out of pocket. I am with Kaiser though, medicaid life but I have an inheritance that I'm willing to use to fix my spine if it's fixable, I don't really believe the fascia is fixable though... that is what I'm told I injured for life, my fascia...

fascia is patterned by muscle activation; lots of really subtle pt to fix one's posture, balance, though thats easier said than done. Imo it's sorta analogous to gear timing. I'm speaking anecdotally of personal experience; chronic pain is a bitch.

What is a "third"? What's his or her role?

A "third" or "utility" is the third person in a three-person sound crew. They provide logistical assistance for the sound department. Their responsibilities include maintaining a follow cart with all of the supplies that we need, ordering additional expendables, filling out the time cards and invoices, but must also be able to wire people and be a second boom when needed on set. In fact, a third is a very poor boom operator (which is quite frequently the case), then I try to improve their skills. And if they are good, and understand the concept, then they end up in my short list of great thirds.
