Dan - I did not mind your original comment, and I am sure the kids will work their butts off and preform an amazing show like they always do. That second comment is where you really went off the rails. A TRUE fan, an ADULT, someone with a HEART, would never belittle the young adults who work their tails off, leaving it all on the field, CHOOSING to be in drum corps because they love it and love entertaining US... the fans, and want to continue the tradition of excellence that started decades ago. EVERYTHING changes, and people like you who purposely choose to comment such negative NON supportive unnecessary BULL**it need to STOP. We get it, you loved "old time drum corps" SO DO THESE YOUNG ADULTS who join DRUM CORPS today, and today's Corps are no less REAL than corps in the past... so next time you feel like commenting some B.S. just think how bad it makes YOU look, because it does nothing but make you look BAD and does not add anything of value to anything, maybe choose to say THANK you to these kids for providing all of us with such amazing shows... if you have nothing nice to say STFU!!!

I marched in drum corps in 1980\1981 and am from California. For years, I've always admired the Cadets, their style, and their repertoire. I had no idea that they were Christians and their faith was so strong. Although I follow the Blue Devils and SCV, the Cadets are my new favorite corps! God bless each one of you! Keep up the great work! You guys are awesome!

I’m beginning to suspect that the downward trend (in placement) for corps like the cadets is not due to them putting on worse shows, or having worse performers. This show is no less impressive or entertaining as the shows in recent years. I think that the crux is that DCI in general is getting better, with more performers and better writing, and the competition is just getting more fierce.
@dctrbrass
@dctrbrass 6 жыл бұрын
I'm a big fan of operas and symphonies, but it sure seems like there's a lot more innovation going on in DCI at the moment (not the electronics...other stuff haha). Would be nice if we saw more change in the concert hall. I think the video game and movie soundtracks are a decent first start. We could also play a bit more 20th century and modern music :) It seems that I hear more new music at DCI shows, than the concert hall. But being a brass activity, I suppose it lends itself more to new music.

This show tried to do too much-- it tried to capture a complex, introspective two hour production on the subject of Christian ritual, all in thirteen minutes. The entirety of Bernstein's Mass in thirteen minutes? Come on. That's not only impossible, but that kind of hyper-adaptation not recommended in any medium. You can't include every plot point here, because it ends up looking like a fast forward instant replay. The biggest compromise in the paring down of the original appears in the ending here, which is completely different in tone than the original production. Here Cadets' ending suggests some kind of halcyon air of forgiveness and reconciliation, and that's the opposite intention of the original. The original's intention was to raise questions about the nature and purpose of organized religion, and even cast an air of doubt about how organized religion quashes creativity and inspiration with onerous, tired ritual without meaning. In the original, the ending is dubious and full of questions. But in this production, the confetti canon ending is about joy and forgiveness, and that Jesus on a gold cross will save us all. Cadets' designers also fell victim here to the hurried pace of modern drill design. As a result, the stage picture changes frantically. As a result, the performers are rushing and scrambling about as if ants before a rain storm. Their motions are so harried that they simply don't make sense. They pick up a prop, dance with it like they're on crack, and then a moment later, throw the prop down and rush to do something else. They look frenzied, lost, and panicked, as if their underwear are on fire. They change costumes for no apparent reason. They appear disjointed, confused, bifurcated and without any super objective. Worse, in this production, we have no one character to hold on to as a through line. Everything is a tumultuous wash of panicked scrambling and discarded costume pieces. Any through line or understructure is lost. The frantic staging here proves that the very essence of the piece Bernstein's Mass was missed by the designers. They were so busy packing in multiple metaphoric stage pictures from the various movements, that the audience lost focus, and gave up on grasping any kind of overall meaning to the production. By the end of the season, the designers sort of landed on the sin/forgiveness/joy template, which is simplistic and doesn't capture the complexity of the original work. Another example of adaptation problems is they start with chaos, same as the original production of Mass, but then chaos appears again in this short production about three quarters of the way through, right before the atonement section, and makes the audience wonder about why chaos appears so often. Cut the initial chaos before the mass begins in a short thirteen minute production like this. Amid all the dance and metaphoric movement and stage pictures, and symbolism, and hectic running around, we see one churchgoer 9:18 sit in the pew alone, he makes the sign of the cross (with the wrong hand), and he changes his garment. This should have been the entire focus of the piece. One man, one introspection. This one heretic visiting the empty church alone, and his subtle transformation throughout the piece could have been the understructure for the entire production, and could have given the piece clarity and depth. Adaptations in drum corps require extra attention to the script, to make sure the essence of the piece is clear, and to make sure it's authentic to the original in some aspect. But that clarity and authenticity were missing here amid the scrambling to include too much. Passionately performed. Seventh place.

As pathetic as I find religion and religious people, this show really grew on me over the course of this summer. Maybe it's the Bernstein, maybe it's the classic Cadets drill, but whatever it was about this show that roped me in, I definitely think it should've placed above BAC and Cavaliers. Oh well, they'll most likely be back with more Lenny for the next few summers, so hopefully they'll have better luck with future productions.

Too far from the religious aspect; very offensive at certain points. Also, the reason why they got 7th was because of everything wrong that George Hopkins did, somewhat hurting his reputation and the judges low-key seeing that.
@CaptainMorgan_CommanderPotts
@CaptainMorgan_CommanderPotts 6 жыл бұрын
It's from Bernstein's Mass and from another commenter, @Jesu Spectre, it's supposed to show the problems in organized religion and towards the end, spark questions in the audience's mind about how pointless it now seems. So yes, that may be why it seems offensive at parts. But there were also the problems of ineffectively cramming a 2 hour musical into 10% of that time, also with the performers being too frenzied and chaotic which didn't allow for much of a plot and depth. The performers were fantastic and passionate, but it wasn't enough to mask the rushed nature of the development/writing. I'm not a huge fan of the Cadets so I haven't heard about what George Hopkins did, but I'd like to know.
